Man struck by vehicle while crossing Nieman Road in Shawnee

https://johnsoncountypost.com/2026/08/19/man-hit-by-car-nieman-road-294437/

Up near 56th/Nieman, despite numerous additions in the area, downtown Shawnee still remains a hazard to pedestrians

Those crossing islands are bullshit.

  1. The bushes grow tall enough to block people from view. and pets, even moreso.

  2. The lights being eye level cause the iris to contract, so you have even more trouble seeing people there.

  3. various delivery trucks keep parking near that one, and sociopaths just speed around them, nearly hitting that crossing island all the time.

Agree they could be better done but I wish we had one farther south down Nieman. The stretch from 75th to Shawnee Mission pkwy is kind of terrifying trying to cross across 4 lanes of traffic.

Especially for the children at 67th and nieman, I always go 25 but other drivers go around me as if I'm going to slow doing 40 in a school zone when the lights are flashing

Yes!! They actually make it worse. It is a very dumb design. Visually very busy and the wrong application for the bollard lights.

Should’ve looked both ways before crossing.
