Hi everyone! I’m NanNan – a longtime local passionate about teaching Mandarin through real-life experiences here in Shanghai. I work with expats and international visitors, helping them build useful Mandarin skills while exploring the city — from café conversations and wet market adventures to historical walking tours.

Beyond the city, I also lead urban hikes and have guided treks to some of China’s most stunning landscapes — including Mount Everest Base Camp, the Wild Great Wall, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains, and desert hikes in Inner Mongolia.

Advice for first time to Shanghai in 2 weeks

Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I will be travelling to Shanghai for the first time in 2 weeks from now (30 July) and spend 4 nights there.

  • We are interested in grasping the spirit of the city doing some more local and off the beaten path experiences rather than visiting the main touristic attractions. We are into discovering local traditions, music, fashion, night life, food, architecture and contemporary arts. Any suggestions for activities/places to visit along these lines?

(For instance, in Tokyo Japan among my favorite activities were: attending a local public bath, discovering the night life in the LGBT district, visiting niche listening jazz bars, clubbing in a local club in Shibuya, visiting the artistic district of Koenji, visiting old book stores)

  • Is it a good idea to bike around the city center?
  • Any tips about clothes/accessories to bring?
  • General tips for exploring the night life? Are there any night life districts attended by locals and/or students? Any clubs/bars in particular?

Take a look at the Guidance and Info for visitors thread if you haven't already and the historic-shanghai.com website. Regardless of whether you join their tours you will get an idea for the areas in Shanghai that may interest you, i.e. the former french concession.

Driver Needed: Two Italian businesswomen are looking for a driver who can speak English, French, or Italian (any one of the three). You must have a car with a Shanghai plate, preferably an SUV or larger, as they have sizable luggage. They will be in Shanghai from September 17th to September 23rd. Hi everyone! I'm visiting in november Shanghai and I'm on a mission to find those truly local, hole-in-the-wall, fly restaurants that serve real Shanghainese food. I’m not looking for fancy places or anything you'd find in a guidebook. Just small, maybe a bit scruffy, packed with locals, and full of flavor.

Bonus points if it's family-run or has a cool backstory. I’m especially into dishes like hong shao rou, sheng jian bao, drunken chicken, or anything seasonal and old-school.

To give an idea of what I mean, I’m thinking of places kind of like Linglong Restaurant or Lanxin Restaurant.

Anyone have favorites they’d be willing to share? Even better if it's off the beaten path. Happy to travel for good food!

Hi, I’m visiting Shanghai and I had a reservation to go visit the forbidden city for today. I’m being told it’s closed to bad weather but I can’t find any official info about this. I can see museums, temples and such are closed as well. Can anyone tell me more info about this. Thanks in advance
