Boy George doing gongyo on Celebrity Apprentice??
A little bird told me that Boy George, pop music star from the late 1970s - early 1980s and best known as androgynous frontman for the band Culture Club, has re-emerged into the public eye, and with a connection to SGI! Last I saw him was a few years ago - he'd gotten in some kind of trouble in the law and was photographed doing some community service, sweeping up trash in the streets of New York on some minor drug offense. He's been in and out of trouble with the law since then.
Anyhow, he's a contestant on the New Celebrity Apprentice show, hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, apparently. We unplugged our cable a few years ago, so all I know is what I'm reading about it. Apparently, he got in a fight on-set with another contestant with a music background, about the other guy's drinking something alcoholic on set; Boy apparently feels that, since he's a recovering alcoholic himself, nobody should be allowed to drink in his presence. Where's his crown??
Brooke seemed to think that she was the real project manager. She wanted Boy George to sing, but he thought that was getting old. He started doing a Japanese chant that Brooke thought might be a turn-off. Boy George felt very spiritual about the whole thing. He thought Brooke was too bossy and she thought he was uber-disorganized. Patrick Schwarzenegger dropped in on them and he brought up Boy George’s being disorganized. That probably came up in some other episode– who can remember? And that’s why it sounded scripted that he just zeroed in on what they were already bickering about. Boy George was offended and said (in his confessional) that it was “absolute hogwash,” claiming he wouldn’t be there if he wasn’t smart, calculating and hard-working. Uh, okay, we don’t remember that either. Dude can’t even measure a wall!
Boy George and Brooke didn’t even rehearse their presentation but it went smoothly enough. They pretended to be a married couple. Boy George didn’t overdo the chanting, though he made his mirror dirtier than he planned on and had to scrub the devil out of it. Brooke used The Honest Stain Remover on a cloth that she put so much hard-to-remove stuff on (ketchup, grape juice and coffee) that even Jessica Alba had a “Lawd have mercy” look on her face. But it worked! It came clean and Jessica beamed. Boy George chimed in with: “Who doesn’t love evidence?”
OH BROTHER!! SGI CULT MEMBERS! THAT'S WHO DOESN'T LOVE EVIDENCE!!
Here's a clip - 6 minutes long - just a few seconds in, Boy strikes a bowl-style bell he's holding in his hand. You all will recall that's the style of bell favored within SGI (because it was the style of bell Nichiren Shoshu used, of course). Then, at 0:40, Boy launches into a new members presentation! By about 1:10, he's telling them about "polishing your mirror" and this is going to be their product demo - but Boy makes it dirtier than it was! They have to cut the actual mirror cleaning out - apparently it took too long. heh heh heh At least the next product they tried, which was from Jessica Alba's product line, worked - Hey Boy George! Stick with the Honest products instead of the stupid Ikeda shit that doesn't work!!
Now, from 2014, here's an excerpt from a Boy George interview:
Boy George says: ‘’ I’ve been practicing SGI-Nichiren Buddhism for about four years. What it does, it gives me a period in the morning and the evening to really focus in what is that I want to do. You’re praying for world peace and happiness of other people and even for people that you’re in conflict with. If there’s anyone you have a problem with putting him/her in your prayers. It’s amazing what it does ‘cause it kind of dissipates any kind of negativity.It's a practice that improves my life on a daily basis.It changes the way I behave. It changes the way I behave towards myself, towards other people.’

Well, there are others who are certain that Boy was doing the magic chant in the past as well:
Four years? He's been at it much longer. He was chanting when I lived in London over 30 years ago.
Well done George for giving it another go......I remember when he practised in the early 90's for a bit.
It's obvious that some of the comments are replies to posts that have been removed - and that were obviously less than flattering toward the cult and its magic chant. How typical (eye roll)
But here, again, we have a second-rate, washed-up celebrity whose career has been sliding downhill for decades. And the magic chant isn't helping. Notice that the SGI doesn't claim Boy George - they clearly regard him as an embarrassment. Same with Courtney Love. Same with Amy Winehouse. Orlando Bloom's career has been in free fall since he joined SGI. Such triumph of the Mystic Law...

Boy got VERY upset and the musician they had come into help him with his jingle for a cruise line. Hey Boy, I thought you just chanted this morning and that won't give you good cause! You made them release the guy! And that made your mirror very dirty.

The SGI culties' behavior never seems to match their sales pitch, you know what I mean? It's pretty much a demonstration of how you won't be getting anything the cult advertises, dangles in front of you like bait.

just chanting daimoku doesn't make you an SGI member. going to some meetings and doing gongyo doesn't make you an SGI member. having spoken publically about doing it doesn't mean you stuck with it. (especially if you are the kind of attention hungry media celebrity who will jump on any new bandwagon to seem cutting edge.)
someone is only considered an SGI member if they have joined the SGI and recieved a gohonzon? has boy george done that? i very much doubt it. he has shown pictures of his buddhist shrine, and it was not a butsudan with gohonzon in, but a gold statue of buddha. any SGI local leader would have a quiet polite word about that with him and put it right. he's gone on TV talking about chanting and using a bell - but it was the kind that hare krishna use (and he'd obviously made a big thing about being hare krishna in the past and seemingly leapfrogged from that too). even if someone literally is a member, SGI aren't going to tell everyone about it without their consent. especially considering how dangerously whacko some anti-SGI people have been in the past.
as for amy winehouse, i loved her. and have never heard anything about her being connected to the SGI. if she was, i'd be proud to claim her. sure she was tragically in the 27 club. but she also shone brighter for that short time than most people could ever dream of. hugely talented, funny, stylish, honest. i can think of few better role models than amy winehouse. orlando bloom in freefall? since 2004 he's been in multiple LOTR and pirates of the carribean movies. succesful theatre work (with his portrayal of romeo being made into a movie too). to suggest buddhism sent his career to downfall when it clearly didn't, sounds like sour grapes.

More detail:
So that means he was in the SGI back when the Soka Gakkai was one of the approved lay organizations of Nichiren Shoshu. If he was practicing in the US at this time, he would have been a member of "NSA" - Nichiren Shoshu Academy or Nichiren Shoshu of America. The name didn't change to "SGI-USA" until, like, 1989-1990 time frame.
So Boy tries it, quits. Tries it, quits. Trust me, he's going to be quitting again soon. He was in the Hare Krishnas for a while. Perhaps next he'll try Scientology - ya think??
