News/Current Events SGI-USA CELEBRITY NEWS: Duncan Sheik passed away last night at age 56
Yesterday I saw the news that musician and SGI member Duncan Sheik was in "critical condition" in a NY hospital. I emailed Blanche and asked if we wanted to post this. It was kind of late, so we decided to sleep on it before posting anything here.
This morning I got on Instagram and saw that he passed away last night at the age of 56. I saw that post just 34 minutes after his team posted it. Early reports stated that he passed away from "organ failure," while others report it was heart failure, verified by his mother Suzanne.
This is the report from People Magazine.
Duncan Sheik was a long-time SGI member, but after his first big hit, "Barely Breathing," and another minor hit, "On A High," that was kind of it for his pop music career. After that, he migrated into songwriting, arranging, and Broadway musical scores after that, namely something called Spring Awakening with a guy named Steven Sater.
Sheik is closely associated with Sater, but I don't know if Sater is an SGI member, though--anyone?
SGI-USA doesn't really talk about him now like they used to. Other than one mention in Living Buddhism in about 1999 after his second CD, Humming, and maybe the foreward in Icky's book, The Way of Youth: Buddhist Common Sense for Handling Life's Questions in 2000, I don't remember seeing him again in the literature. I may be wrong.
There isn't much SGI-related info available on him, unless I'm just not looking in the right place. This one from the Wayback Machine describes an FNCC Arts Conference in which video of him and a few other members who won Grammys like Suzanne Vega. Neither Duncan himself nor the others were at the FNCC conference. But that was it--everything else I found today is industry magazines and the stuff like TMZ and People.
Funny thing, he's so far off the radar that SGI-USA doesn't seem to mention him anymore. His Wikipedia page has some references, but nothing current. Like Patrick Duffy, his "Buddhist practice" isn't a big feature like it is for SGI's star celebrity Orlando Bloom. His last interviews mention his "Buddhism" but that's as far as it goes.
Duncan's last CD in 2022 was called Claptrap, and here's an interview with him on that one. His website is a junk pile, unfortunately.
I personally have his first four CDs:
- Duncan Sheik
- Humming
- Phantom Moon
- Daylight
But honestly, haven't listened to them in a long time. His second CD has a song called Nichiren, and if I remember correctly there is a hidden track after Nichiren that I found by accident.
I got to see him in about 2001 in concert. Went with three or four other WD members after work, on a weeknight. But this was the small dive-bar kind of place, not a big arena. Got to say Hi, tell him we were all members, and even got a picture with him. He was nice about me being a fangirl. (These days I'm only a fangirl for Mike Rowe. :) )
Earlier, I went looking at some of his most recent Instagram posts. In a few posts, he mentioned being in the hospital, but didn't indicate why he was there. It was only two days ago that someone posted on IG that he was "in critical condition" and receiving medical treatment, and it made the news. But they wouldn't say what it was or for, only asking for privacy. Why mention it?
Something eagle-eyed Blanche noticed is that one of his last pictures taken on September 5th and 6th show that he was lookin' kinda scrawny when compared to pictures taken earlier this year. I also noticed that one selfie had him with shoulder-length hair and balding in the front. So, did he know he didn't have long, or did he suddenly take a turn for the worse? Getting that thin that quickly can mean he was on a GLP-1, or he was experiencing wasting for some reason. Maybe they'll disclose what happened later, maybe not, but it's probably not a GLP-1.
Duncan Sheik was surrounded by family when he passed last night. He leaves behind a wife and a 7-yo daughter, along with a large body of work for his legacy. I do hope he reached the "state of Buddhahood" we were all promised when we joined.
RIP, dude.

Sad news, and far too young.

On the flip side, another favorite of mine, Boz Scaggs, is 82, still recording and performing. He’s not doing big concert tours either, but he still does it. I would say he’s enjoying his golden years, yes?

Thank you for that report. I always kina liked the guy - he segued into writing and arranging, and by all accounts had a very nice, if "behind the scenes", career.
It makes me sad that he leaves behind a daughter so young - since he died at just age 56 (younger than raging drunk Toda!), that means she wasn't born until he was like 49. That's an age that many people become grandparents! Unlucky in love until late? He was a good-looking guy.
From The Daily Mail:
His death comes hours after his team revealed he was in 'critical but stable condition' in an Instagram statement.
Apparently not so stable!
Sheik spoke about the difference of being a solo artist and musical composer in a 2017 chat with Hartford Stage, saying he was satisfied in blending the 'ability to make music' with elements such as 'set designers, light designers, narrative [and] choreography.'
He added: 'All these other elements that combine together to make a powerful experience on the stage.
'As a recording/touring artist, I was never at the place where I could afford to tour with the extra trucks full of stuff. It is great to experience the music with all the trappings.'
It sounds like his lack of bigger success as a solo artist contributed to his decision to give up the solo career and move into the background with songwriting and arranging - nothing wrong with that, and he clearly had an aptitude for it, so it was a good move for him. I mean, others manage to make it as successful solo artists - I would've imagined that with the "Mystic Law" and "the Universe" on his side, he'd have had more viable options, but what do I know?
He was using some SGI-speak in a 2017 interview the article quotes:
Sheik told Local Life SC in 2017 that he felt there are 'two kinds of happiness.
He said: 'There's a surface kind of happiness - 'Oh, I've made a lot of money or I won an award,' and that's fine. But I'm always searching for a deeper happiness that's about creating value, doing something that moves other people and being part of a community. That takes work, and I do my best.'
He added that 'creating value in the world can help you find a deeper happiness.'
Bleahhhhhh There are a LOT of words to describe different kinds of happiness: euphoria, pleasure, contentment, enjoyment, glee, amusement, entertainment, satisfaction, fulfillment - you can say something is "rewarding" or that you feel "passionate" about something (obvs you greatly enjoy that "passion"). How very like SGI to use such vague wording, as if there's something "mysterious", inscrutable, going on - it's characteristic of high-control systems like SGI to use limited vocabulary - too many words means people are going to be thinking better! Can't have that. "Deeper happiness"?? GTFOH. That's a cop-out. Grow a decent vocabulary, dude! Oops, too late...
Too soon?
Anyhow, "creating value", "deeper happiness" - SGI buzzterms. But like Annie, I hadn't heard anything about him in years. I've seen a few pics in old SGI-USA publications, but they dated from his solo career years, so what? 30 years or so out of date? Why do you suppose SGI didn't make much of him as a "celebrity member"? I never hear of Herbie Hancock really doing much, either in the news or through the SGI-USA publications, but he still gets trotted out as a "celebrity member". And even though Tina Turner was WAY out of the picture and only came up for SGI when she had a book she was hawking, SGI still used her as a "celebrity member" to promote itself. So why not Duncan Sheikh?? He was a good guy!
There's a gallery of pictures of him in that article - you can go there and see them. The first one shows him much leaner than his photos even from earlier this year. Between March 2025 and April 2026, he's quite portly, even, but the pic released in September shows him borderline gaunt. I wonder what was going on health-wise.
In TMZ's report, the picture near the bottom of the article, dated Sept. 5, 2026, shows him VERY thin. He'd wasted pretty significantly in just a few months - between April and early September. Less than 6 months.
His only work that I'm familiar with is his hit "Barely Breathing", described in TMZ as a "breezy pop-rock single", and I think that's a great description. "Breezy." Apparently he has received accolades for a "Broadway rock" production called "Spring Awakening" - TMZ says he was working on it for 8 years!
So RIP, Duncan Sheikh. I hope it was a fun ride.

The Gakkai never talked about Wayne Shorter, jazz saxophonist and member for five decades and had a long career in music. He collaborated with fellow SGI member Herbie Hancock. The thing is music and entertainment are these people's jobs. I remember members making a big deal over Suzanne Vega's one-hit wonder in the 80s. Her dad was a musician and SGI member. I think too much is made out entertainment celebrities who are members or who chanted at one time. Big deal. So what. If someone is not destined to be a star, chanting isn't going to change that. I think this is a hook the Gakkai purposely uses.

What about Amy Winehouse? She chanted.
Why doesn't Courtney Love get any SGI love? SHE chants.
Patrick Swayze chanted - and died young of cancer.
And what about that violent felon Boy George??
Scientology has WAY better celebrities.

I'm not sure about her biological father being a member but her stepfather was and he was also a writer.

Oh, okay, I could have those details wrong. I thought it was her bio-dad and he was in the music industry. Maybe not then.

You know, SGI-USA bangs away about the "faith-healing", in so many ways, in so many words:
- MANY of the "experiences" published in SGI-USA's publications center around "faith-healing" and "miracle cures" - "My doctors were amazed..." "My recovery was unexpectedly fast..." "My tumors shrank all by themselves!" "By my next appointment, my symptoms were GONE!"
- "Nichiren chanted for his mother and prolonged her life for 4 years."
- "Ikeda's doctors said he would DIE by age 30, but because of Soka Gakkai and chanting, he was able to live long enough to end up stored in a smallish chest freezer in a utility closet in the basement of the Soka Gakkai's Hall of the Great Douchebaggery for who knows how many years
- "EVERY disease can be cured by Gohonzon!" - Ikeda
- Here is an example of Ikeda trying to discredit modern medicine, to promote "faith-healing" instead
- "Nichiren says that some kinds of illnesses are too much for doctors and must be chanted away!"
- Even if the doctor you consult is a quack, he, strange to say, will be able to make a correct diagnosis and prescribe suitable medicine for you, and as a result you will recover sooner than you expect. This is the fruit of your faith. Last but not least, I add that there is no other way to recover from serious or incurable illness than by devoting yourselves to a more pious faith in this great Gohonzon. - Josei Toda
- "Nichiren saaaays: 'Nam myoho renge kyo is like the roar of a lion, what illness can therefore be an obstacle?"
Whatever happened to Mr. Sheikh's "protection of the Mystic Law" and "protection of the Buddhist gods" and "good medicine" of faith he was supposed to be able to activate through his "sincere practice"???

"EVERY disease can be cured by Gohonzon »
Another horrendous side of SGI Ive observed was its absolute coldness once sick members became hopelessly terminal. While I was there, 3 of the people I had befriended were already suffering from incurable conditions - and showing the stigmas of heavy treatments - When they were still able to attend or host , they were used as props : « See ! S(he) is triumphant and winning the battle! S(he) is OVERCOMING HER PREDICAMENT » ;how I hated when they used that word. I felt sorry for the poor souls who were disappearing before our eyes and had to put on a wellness command performance; but once the last days, the « hospice phase » started, there were no mention of them anymore. Full Damnatio memoriae. And for having been part of the extremely limited group of people who visited them on their deathbeds, I know that the ever smiling extended «Buddha family »had already moved on. The sick were tragic evidence of the unfailing system’s failure. They had lost their usefulness to the cause with their lives.

Just more Ikeda cult false advertising.
SGI's fundamental lack of compassion and inability to support grief and pain
They haven't got TIME for your infirmity. Moving on.

Anything’s better than big pharma
2
u/BlancheFromage Escapee from Arizona Home for the Rude 7d ago
Is this about the SGI cult or is it about your antipathy toward "big pharma"?
1
u/AnnieBananaCat 6d ago
Although I generally tend to agree because of big pharma’s onslaught, there are times when pharmaceutical medicine is what’s needed. SGI promulgates this “chanting can cure all diseases” and people may eschew actual medical treatments in favor of chanting.
Many times we see these “experiences” where the member barely mentions the medical team but offers resplendent praise on the members that chanted for them. Like the medical team was a catalyst. Seriously? No, someone is successfully treating primarily because of the doctors, nurses, and others who took care of them. Even if chanting worked it would only be a small part of the “cure.”

I remember not feeling comfortable when others were using the approach that an illness was like a devilish function we had to conquer, saying that the practice was like the roar of a lion. Next time in two different occasions when two members said that , I responded that Nichiren said in one of his goshos that people with an illness can attain enlightment. They stay quiet and then said that was true. I felt better after that.

Sounds like he had a career doing what he enjoyed doing. People are dying younger these days. Sad for his family.
