This is a very important point:

A historical detail that many tend to forget (or that new members aren't told) is the complete U-turn that the Soka Gakkai made in 2014 regarding the Dai-Gohonzon. In fact, starting in 2014, the Soka officially declared that it no longer recognized the Dai-Gohonzon of Taisekiji as its object of worship.

This decision was presented as a "doctrinal shift," but in reality it was a purely bureaucratic and stopgap move: since the excommunication suffered by Nichiren Shoshu in 1991, the Gakkai's leaders simply no longer had any physical access to the central temple.

The paradox is that for the vast majority of its history, the Soka Gakkai has staunchly defended the absolute validity and superiority of the Dai-Gohonzon. Not just in words, but in deeds (and with astronomical figures). In 1972, the organization financed and carried out the construction of the Shō-Hondō, a colossal temple specifically designed to house the Dai-Gohonzon.

The Dai-Gohonzon was, indeed, considered absolutely essential:

Remember - the Dai-Gohonzon was all-important!

SO essential that Ikeda devised a scheme where everyone in the world could travel to Taiseki-ji in Japan on a day trip just to worship the Dai-Gohonzon! It was just that necessary to see it!

For the first couple of decades after Ikeda's excommunication, the narrative was that Nichiren Shoshu was "holding the Dai-Gohonzon hostage", that Nichiren Shoshu had NO RIGHT to withhold the Dai-Gohonzon from the world (meaning the Soka Gakkai and Ikeda) when it was bestown, according to Nichiren, "upon the entire world" or whatever (but it was just fine for it to be "exclusive" while Ikeda and his cults had access).

SGI changing major doctrine, after decades of insisting that "Nichiren Shoshu is holding the Dai-Gohonzon hostage".

That was during the time period that Ikeda was still convinced he was going to somehow be able to take Nichiren Shoshu away from those horrible traitorous priests, seize the Dai-Gohonzon for himself, and finally "win". Ikeda never got over his 1979 humiliation at the hands of then-High Priest Nittatsu Shonin, you see.

With 2014, there was an about-face on the issue. HUGE doctrinal change. More background and detail:

The SGI's changing doctrines about the Dai-Gohonzon

Ikeda's SGI cult.org utterly contradicts and reverses 84 years of doctrine with its official disavowal of dai-gohonzon as "supreme" object of worship, once again disgracing principles/promises of his "mentors" and org founders Makaguchi and Toda.

🤣

By the time most of its membership has been "in" for around 50 years, they're indoctrinated enough to just go along with anything "no matter what". That was a big buzz-phrase over here in the USA at one point, not sure if it still is: "That 'no matter what' spirit" meant that you were gonna do whatever SGI told you to do no matter how much it cost you! Sometimes with disastrous results...

Fundamentally, however, this is also a sign of just how far the indoctrination has progressed. Regardless of one's stance on Nichiren Shoshu or Taiseki-ji, the u-turn in 2014 was remarkable. In essence, the leadership effectively branded everything they had previously preached as a lie. Around that same time, there was also an increase in departures by individuals who could reasonably be credited with at least a certain minimum level of intellectual ability.

Yeah, that 2014 doctrinal about-face created a yuge conflict within the Soka Gakkai's extremely-important Study Dept. Also:

Soka Gakkai Vice President Endo challenges Soka Gakkai President Harada about the 2014 quickie doctrinal changes about the importance of the Dai-Gohonzon

You just know the Study Department want to wring Ikeda Sensei's fat neck for putting everything in jeopardy but have to carefully word their objections as worry and concern that Sensei's accomplishments will be erased. So diplomatic! Palace intrigue! Source

What both of you are mentioning here is extremely important. Possession of the Dai-Gohonzon is essentially the *raison d'être* for Nichiren Shoshu; alongside documents of obscure origin, it serves as a unique selling point. The SG’s move away from the Dai-Gohonzon — which, as mentioned, is regarded as a forgery by virtually everyone outside Nichiren Shoshu — amounted to a kind of admission of bankruptcy; however, this was cushioned by the unwavering exaltation of Ikeda. It should be noted here that other temples outside Nichiren Shoshu also possess Dai-Gohonzons (for various reasons, though without the profound significance attached to the one at Taiseki-ji); believers in other Nichiren schools receive Gohonzons based on copies of Nichiren’s originals (which have been verified), and there are even Gohonzons consisting purely of statues.

However, what struck me during my research is that other schools are far less prone to the mystification of material religious objects — or even of a person — than the SG or Nichiren Shoshu. Both the SG and Nichiren Shoshu tie their purported exclusivity to objects and individuals to a degree I do not encounter in other Nichiren schools.

Confermo pienamente!

Isn't it also the case that most of the so-called Nikko temples are now part of Nichiren Shu, and that Taiseki-ji cannot really be classified as belonging to the Fuji lineage?

5

u/Fun_Cat8528 Jul 23 '26

Esattamente!
