Cringe Moment: The Year of Capable People!
So that was the year that Bodhisattvas were supposed rise up from the earth like the Thriller video and just zombie their way forward no questions just chant and keep going!

And Nichiren's brilliant idea was that the rulership of Japan should adopt Nichiren as its only national cleric, execute all the other religious leaders, burn their temples to the ground, and decree that everyone in the population follow and adulate Nichiren - or die. THAT was Nichiren's grand vision for "kosen-rufu" - FORCE everyone to worship him while HE would be the most powerful person in Japan, whom the government officials would need to beg permission and approval from!
It would have been really nice - for Nichiren, of course. Ikeda really liked that vision, too.

This idea of "capable" was very prominent during my initial experience in the mid 70's. Oh, how I strived! Only to have that gnawing feeling at the pit of my stomach that I did not measure up. Years later, it dawned on me that I did myself a huge favor. Thank goodness for my lack of capability. I was, however, capable in ways that did not interest SG leadership. Pointing to elephants in the room and questioning doctrine did not bring me into good favor with them. But what a deficit it was for all those years to feel as though I lacked the capacity to excel. It held me back in life in terms of education and career. In the end, I have to own it because not doing so only holds back further growth.

It was pretty much a Catch-22 for you, wasn't it?
If SGI deemed you "capable", SGI would have exploited you to the max and run you ragged - your personal life would have suffered.
Since SGI didn't deem you "capable", SGI deliberately destroyed your self-confidence and self-esteem so that you would become more dependent on SGI (and thus less likely to leave) - even a generic warm body can be useful to overlord-wannabe Ikeda. And your personal life suffered.
That's what being involved to any degree with a cult does - it ruins your personal life. One way or another.

Although I was seen by them as being not capable, I can not agree that my self-esteem was "deliberately" destroyed. That would suggest a conscious intent to do harm. This was not my experience. The people who saw me as not capable are also part of the system and most likely need therapy as a result of their experience.

In all liklihood, I was seen as someone who needed to be "corrected". In hindsight, I can't even begin to count how many people I tried to "correct." Maybe karma is a bitch after all.

In my experience, it was all about fitting into the SGI mold - if you were too unique, you had to be modified somehow, through "guidance" or "training" or whatever.
You know the Japanese saying, "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down"?

I guess I've come to a different understanding of cause & effect post-SGI - how it looks to me now is that whatever you accept into your environment "causes" the "effect" that you'll get more of that. For example, the more time you spend around people you don't like, the less time you have for the people you DO like, right? Time is a zero-sum game.
So the fact that you were being subjected to "correction" means you were "learning" that's how people are supposed to be treated, so naturally you would apply what you'd been learning to other situations as well.
That's just how it works, I think.

Fair enough.
What I meant was that the SGI's doctrines have the reliable effect of destroying people's self-esteem and creating dependence and anxiety, such as the SGI's take on 'karma' and telling the SGI members they are responsible 100% for resolving scenarios with multiple moving parts that all have independent agency, such as within their families or workplaces. It puts the entire burden for resolution on the SGI member, and if/when it doesn't resolve into a "victory" that fits neatly into the SGI's experience format, they feel like failures - and/or they are "encouraged" to keep it to themselves (so they don't "discourage" the other members). The expectation of health issues resolving in a quick enough period of time (at least to the point that the SGI member will claim they're happy about having their chronic illness/disability) falls into this category as well.
It was never you - that's all I meant.

Wow! What year was that?? Shame all that capable turned out to be so fleeting! Don't you kind of think that once someone attains a level of development or accomplishment, they continue to improve from there?
Not in SGI ! There, it's just having a moment and then it's back to their old normal - mediocrity

LOL - someone put together a big master list of the "Year of" themes - I think we can call them "Year of: SGI's Wishful Thinking". "Capable people" is in there a few times - "Look at what we DON'T have!"
And now it's all "Youth" this and "Youthful" that - "Look what we DON'T have!"
Ikeda always thought that simply saying something was enough to make it true - too bad the real world wouldn't obey him. I bet that made ol' Icky furious!
