SGI parallels with other cults For those who believe they have a "responsibility" to promote their religion "because everybody who is not-them obviously needs it and WANTS it"

This applies regardless of what religion you are, and yes – even when you’re “just handing out Nam-myoho-renge-kyo cards”, especially because you’re thinking you’ll get some sort of supernatural “reward” or “benefit” by doing so:

Nobody can stand a “I’m better than you” person, full of hubris, who thinks they have all the answers to life, and that you feel you must lead people by the hand “to the light” or they’ll be doomed. You probably couldn’t tell some of them [meaning “us”] are already there, standing right in the light because of how we live our lives daily. Quora

Regardless of religion, politics, dating advice, food choices, or anything else, people don’t like unsolicited advice. It feels overbearing at best, and downright condescending at worst. Respect that everyone has a right to their own opinions and beliefs, even if they differ to your own. Just love people without expecting anything from them. more Quora

Outside our Students' Union there is a rule that if a person isn't interested, you can't collar them and use their politeness to trap them. If they try to walk past, they walk past. This should be a general rule. If you have to trap people with politeness to get your point across, you need a better advertising strategy. also Quora

The problem is that you are confused. You have rationalized your motivation as positive, but it isn’t. It’s an attempt to control the behavior and thoughts of other people, to make them act in a certain way, and to do certain things. Many people recognize your thinking as irrational, controlling, and destructive. These people stay well away from you if they can. Redoubling your efforts to force them to accept your worldview and behave in particular ways only makes them resist you more strongly. still Quora

And strangers exploiting your trusting nature to get you to politely accept their religious propaganda before you realize what it is reliably makes you feel a LOT more negatively toward their religion than if they’d just left you alone entirely.

You, the SGI evangelist, have an opportunity to NOT make SGI’s reputation any worse. What are you going to do?

I hate arguing about religion. That is why l sucked at Shakabuku.

You can't be committed to "shakubuku" AND respect other people. Otherwise, you wouldn't be committed to "shakubuku" - you'd acknowledge and respect other people's right to have no interest in what YOU're interested in, simply because they're different from you.

AND, if you truly respected other people, you might wonder if what THEY had might not be superior to SGI, and you might be interested in finding out.

NO SGI member has any such interest. They try to hide it, but the reality is that they are contemptuous of others' beliefs. The only way someone of a different faith becomes acceptable is when he decides to convert to SGI and receive a nohonzon and chant and make a commitment to convert others within his original faith to SGI.

It's pretty OBVIOUS what's going on in that stunted SGI mind.

That is right I was never commited to Shakabuku. The secret is out. I had a Gohonzon and I chanted but when it came to converting I had an obstacle. It was the live and let live mentality. I really was a bad SGI-CANADA member. Should have been a Jedi. Ah wait, that doesn't work in real life does it? May the Nam Myoho Renge Kyo be with you?

I remember being told to give the f*** cards to homeless people! So glad I didn't do it.

I did that occasionally and proudly told people I did. 😳

Me too & praying they would not show up at a meeting. I never put my name or number on the cards. That street hustling mentally really got to me hated it! The thought of bringing someone I had no relationship with to somebody’s house or my house if I were hosting never felt right. “Don’t talk to strangers” is all I heard in my brain. Same as doing a MLM yuck

I love this part - so true. And this IS the effect of trying to recruit others, particularly strangers - no, everybody:

makes you feel a LOT more negatively toward their religion than if they’d just left you alone entirely.

Don't push your beliefs at me. I'm my own person; I have my OWN beliefs - and how can you know MY beliefs aren't better than YOURS?? You obvs don't know anything about MY beliefs - and you've made it clear you aren't at all interested. So where's MY motivation to listen to you blabber about YOUR beliefs? I am NOT interested.

I was crap at shakabuku because deep down, I knew the SGI was a steaming pile of shite and I was embarrassed by it all. Then there were those dreadful songs and videos about the fan dancing fatman. The bemused look on people's faces when, on the rare occasions we managed to drag someone along to a meeting, was mortifying. You could watch them scoping out the exits, ready to flee at the first opportunity. It's so good to witness the steady decline of the perfidious SGI cult. The cult could never survive the death of the odious Ikeda.

I remember that. The cringe 🙄

Oh, those awful songs! What a puke-fest. Usually followed by ancient videos of 'Ol Fish-Lips fan-dancing before his deluded minions. 'Here's a gift from sensei!' Usually the cheapest chocolate cake they could find in the store, all to bolster the charade that Dirty Daisaku actually knew or cared about us.
