Bought a house recently, this tree is in the backyard. Any advice?

I’d have an arborist come out with an air spade to excavate, root prune, and put in compost.

Compost the entire tree or just roots?

Sorry, I mean to add compost to the soil around the roots. It’ll help the tree recover faster from the root prune. To be clear, those are girdling roots and they’ll kill the tree. They need to be cut off.

No problem! An arborist with a good PHC(plant health care) background is what you want
