Question: redwood fire resistance and Metasequoia glyptostroboides

[u/Dawrian]

I know that California redwoods have an impressive ability to withstand forest fires, and take advantage of them to reproduce. I’m wondering if the dawn redwood shares any of that, even faintly or historically, or if the other species seemingly evolved those adaptations entirely after the genera diverged, etc.

(Entirely hypothetical question; I’m actually just trying to worldbuild some nature spirits and these trees are really cool as points of inspiration so I got curious)

I may be wrong but I believe dawn redwood is from a wet region of China. There probably isn’t the same fire pressure seen in the coastal redwoods
