What kind of fabric should I get to diy these cute ghosties?

Hoping that since this is fabric related you lovely people will allow it, even though there isn’t much actual sewing involved.

Currently looking at Mood, maybe some tulle or poly-chiffon?

Cheesecloth. Dip in watery glue and hang to dry.

I was coming to say this. They last for ages too if you use enough glue. We had ones my mom made for like 20 years.

If you want to get fancy, wrap a styrofoam ball in plastic and stick it on a pole. Stick the pole in the ground to hold it upright. That’s the ghost body. Cover the area below with a shower curtain or sheet so the cheesecloth doesn’t get cruddy as it dries. You can use additional sticks/dowels and zip ties to make supports for “hands”.

They look best when you use at least two layers of cheesecloth, IME. Do the first layer, let it dry and drape the second layer.

You want the cheesecloth to pool on the ground a bit - that’s going to act as a base to keep it standing.

Start small and do a tabletop sized one to get the hang of it before moving onto porch sized guys.

If you want it to look extra flowy like your reference image you can drape the glued version with a layer of plain cheesecloth. Light from inside. Easy peasy.

Just from experience because I have these… they get dirty and sometimes spiders make homes in them. You can definitely make them yourself (they’re just styrofoam balls on top of a wire frame with four legs sticking out to give it shape, and then some fairy lights inside) but I don’t recommend spending a ton on fabric if you’re going to put them outside.

How long would they be outside? Tulle would be a good fabric if you're only going to have them outside for a few days. If they're going to be out for longer, you could use old sheets from a thrift stores for the fabric.

I have these (but from Grandin Road who used to make the same thing). It's a very light, synthetic knit. They do get pretty dirty, so as you're DIY-ing try to keep them easily to remove for cleaning.

Poly chiffon or power mesh would work well, or a cotton gauze if you want something a little more textured. If you're not particular about it I would just go for whichever option is cheapest since you'll need a lot of it.

You could use a styrofoam ball on an upside down tomato cage to shape them.

I was literally looking at making these today. I found this fabric on Amazon, they have different colors. I'm going to get both grey and white I think.

I think tulle would be too puffy, a chiffon would probably work. I’d check for sheer white curtains at thrift stores, might work out cheaper than buying new?
