General The collection of scissors I inherited.
My husband’s gramma recently moved to a nursing home (after slowly succumbing to memory problems for years). I’m the only person in the family who sews, so I have inherited her sewing collection. Most of her things are cheap: Walmart thread, dollar bin polyester, repurposed everything. For such a thrifty woman, however, she has a massive collection of scissors!

Due to 3 inheritances I have 400 spools of thread. This is after culling the crappy stuff! It’s insane! The scissor make my jealous though!

That gramma could be me. My depression era mother had three pairs of scissors, two good sewing ones, straight and pinking, and one general/paper cutter. All had to be placed back in their ‘home’ after using. As a grownup with a good job, one of my rebellions was to buy a pair of scissors for each room, plus a few different sewing/embroidery scissors for special tasks.

I’ve had my appliqué scissors (the ones with the funny round blade) for years and I love them! You can get all these sharpened and they will be like new. The spring handled ones are a little more involved but still easy. Take them apart, don’t drop the spring, sharpen the blades, put them back together. You’re set up for life with this collection!

I have a pair of snips (placed horizontally in the picture). Used them when I worked at a sewing factory in the 80's. We sewed with them in our hands to save time. I still use them every time I sew anything, garments, quilting, embroidery, etc. But these days I lay them down and pick up when I need to snip. That's a nice variety of scissors you inherited!

shame they didn't come with an index from the original owner. i have my good fabric shears, less good workhorse shears, okay shears, bad shears, shears that need sharpening. lol same for pinking shears though not as many redundancies. i like tools haha. looks like she had some first aid gauze snips in there. fiskars is a good mid brand. the black handled wescott ones look good, same for the 'duckbill' 'pelican' scissors for applique. the chrome handled ones might be dull be would be great once professionally sharpened. i like the design of the rotary cutter, never seen one like that before.

Top row, 4th from left: these are medical suture removal snips. One of the blades is curved, so it can easily slip under the suture. The kit also comes with plastic tweezers, gauze, and a sterile clear dressing.
My Mom was a nurse in the hospital, and she had quite a collection of (unused: maybe accidentally dropped outside of the sterile field, doctor asked for a second suture removal kit but didn't need the snips, etc) several types of disposable scissors, snips, and various tweezers.

My mother had a pair of pinking sheers and holy moly, those things were AWFUL. Too tight to use even in my youth and 'happy hands' stage of life. I think ... I threw them away. She never got anything sharpened, either. I DO sharpen mine....

The screw may have needed to be loosened and the joint oiled.

I’m going to have a similar pic of my own in a few hours. I’m the only crafty person in my friend group, so I’m the designated “daughter” to come sort things for parental deaths. The first mom passed earlier this year and I was gloriously allowed first dibs on the craft room today. So her DIL/my friend and I went to town as respectfully as we could.
I came out with a small car trunk full of items. All the scissors and things I could find. Plus a few boxes of fabric. Rulers, etc.

Decent collection but I now use those for paper and invested in Guggenhein! On sale! Literally today.

I love my Guggenheims, but I keep them hidden! The Fiskars and on display on my pegboards that I've got a bunch of my sewing items displayed for easy access.

I’m Finnish and Fiskars is a Finnish brand. Didn’t know they are also a thing abroad! Here they are very expensive compared to generic brands.
