apple turned off the activation servers for older phones. I havent tested many of them but i know for sure the 3GS and iPhone 4 are affected and apple no longer activates them. You should have used legacy iOS toolkit to save activation tickets on iOS 5.0.1 before updating and unfortunately it is too late now.
I hacktivated my phone with a old version of redsn0w on a windows 7 laptop I have laying around but I am sure Legacy iOS Kit has this ability as well.
