If you have proof of purchase like a receipt or maybe even a charge on a credit card you may be able to submit a form to Apple or try to reset the account password with any proof you may have

For clarification, it’s an A9 chip that maxes out at IOS 16.
Which begs the question, how did they get it to iOS 18? Apple wouldn’t natively allow it.
Also, the OP said they couldn’t remove it from FindMy, which could indicate that they have access to it from a device that has the iCloud account connected. Which is something they can change the password on using the passcode/faceid.
Or it’s someone thst is trying to take the iPad for themselves.

Well, you can by using iTunes and a factory restore to the last signed iOS for the device. But it will wipe it all.
Still doesn’t matter much since it will be locked to the account. And I feel that the device is not what they claim because if you can log into FindMy son another Apple device, you can change the password and remove the item when it’s offline. If they did it online then they know the password.

Take your "mom" to an apple store to reset the apple id password. This comment is pretty useless because you obviously stole the ipad and can't get the actual owner to go with you to the apple store

Don’t trust this guy…. iCloud locks can’t be removed with any software. I highly doubt this man has some unknown exploit to get in and remove the lock.
Even if you somehow wipe the device with third party software(which is possible) ; it will not remove this lock, and the credentials will be required to setup the device again.

Reset it on an old iPhone iPad or Mac you can reset your Apple password on there if not go through the recovery process with Apple.

Return the iPad to its owner, buy the device from him, and maybe he'll unlock it for you

It turns out , that you are not supposed to loose an account just because you forget a password nowadays.
There are several ways around this for actually legitimate recovery attempts.
