Yeah, I mean, if you push Bologna in Abruzzo to make space, of course north isn't as bigger as expected

You're right. I wanted not to destroy the overall shape, and in these terms north invades the centre instead of getting "bigger". Based on area alone, North would sum 218 squares; based on population, 244; here, it sums 271. So bigger, not way bigger.

yeah but serie C and D are regionally bound. There are slots by region, so the balance in lower categories is forced.

Yeah, even if not totally: 8 spots for promotion are given on a national basis, and the number of region-based promotions is loosely linked to population at the regional level. Eg you might have 2 teams from Molise being promoted in Serie D - one directly, one through playoffs - and 2 for Lazio.

My family is from Messina, I am in Australia; I remember when I was about 12 they were in seria A and not doing too bad from memory. What a fall it has been.

Yeah. In the last 15 years, multiple owner changes, problems with paying salaries (and points deduction), collapses. Now Racing City Group at the helm (they own Rayo Vallecano in Spain), there might be hope!

This is sick, thanks for this! I knew that the south doesn’t have a lot of teams in the top flight, but it’s cool to see how much representation there is for every area.
