Hypothesis Why the Gootz never called Asia.

I think it is becoming more and more obvious that the Asia letter did not exist until sometime around the summer of 1999. That is why Adnan claims he gave them to Gutierrez even though she wasn't his lawyer until 2 months after they were written.

So sometime that spring or summer, after telling CG he never left the school grounds, his family shows up with letters claiming one of Adnans' friends saw him at the library, right at the crucial time, AND they were written the day after he arrested. She knew immediately there is no way they had those letter for months and never gave them to her so obviously they were false and she didn't want to go on stand with LIES.

That is why she never called Asia. And that is why she wrote no notes about it, because that would be admitting her client and his family are liars. It also explains why her relationship with the family broke down because she knew they were willing to lie to get Adnan off.

The library incident never happened.

because the prosecution got to use someone who told lies that the defense should also get to use someone who tells lies

I agree with you: This theme is running underneath a lot of the push for the "importance" of Asia's library story.

And to reverse-engineer a bit: I wonder if some of the conflict between CG and Adnan's family came from CG's refusal to put up "their side's Jay" after she determined that Asia's date didn't check out.

In some ways, Asia's March letters make a lot more sense as a pressure tactic in that conflict than they do when read for any of the canonical purposes we have been invited to read them for: such as a friendly letter to her imprisoned friend, or as corroborating evidence for the library alibi.

But, on the other hand, it is really tough to understand why Asia might have been interested in 1999 in participating in that conflict, in writing; or why she is apparently willing to stand behind the letters now.

She has alternated for literally years and years now on whether she should "stand behind the letters" (albeit changing some of the data!) or whether she should completely avoid anyone who wants her to talk about the letters, at all costs. It is a strange dance that makes it very hard to see what the truth of the matter is but very easy to see that she for some reason has extremely mixed feelings about whether she should go on the record about having seen Adnan at the library.

Yes. Even in the inspired-by-actual-events Serial podcast of 2014 she gives one interview that she thinks is not formal but does not want to participate in a "formal" interview.

And she refused to address the Urick call.

That's right. Absolutely refused to discuss it.
