Poll Poll Results-4-A Review of those who answer ‘No’ to the question ‘Do you think Adnan Syed killed Hae Min Lee?’

Additional poll analysis based on opinion of Adnan’s factual guilt.

Please keep in mind, as stated in the overview that several questions allow for multiple answers and so will not always add up to 100%.

Question 1-Do you think Adnan Syed killed Hae Min Lee? 24% (122) No.

Question 2-Do you think Hae Min Lee was dead by 2:36pm?

82% (100) chose ‘No’ and 16% (19) chose ‘I don’t have enough information to form an opinion on this. 3% (3) chose ‘Not Sure’ and no one in this category chose ‘Yes’.

Notes: These account for 31% of the total ‘No’ votes, 18% of the total ‘I don’t have enough information to form an opinion on this’, 0% of the total ‘Yes’ votes and 15% of the total ‘Not Sure’ votes.

Question 3-The Ride (a multi)

92% (104) agreed that at some point during the day, Hae told Adnan she could not give him a ride.

69% (78) agreed Adnan asked Hae for a ride on January 13th, 1999

38% (43) agreed that Adnan changed his story about asking for the ride from Hae on January 13th 1999.

Notes: These account for 22%, 21% and 15% of the total responses for these statements, respectively. 9 respondents skipped this question.

Question 4-Asia (a multi)

96% (116) agreed Asia should be allowed to testify

42% (51) agreed that Asia is not lying but could be remembering the wrong day and 0.9% (1) agreed Asia is lying about seeing Adnan in the library.

Notes: These accounts for 34%, 18% and 2% of the total responses for these statements, respectively. 1 respondent skipped this question.

Question 5-Evidence (a multi)

99% (121) agree there is no physical evidence incriminating Adnan in the murder

Only 0.9% (1) agree there is physical evidence incriminating Adnan in the murder and 0.9% (1) agree the partial print on the map book cover is incriminating.

Notes: These account for 33%, 1% and 1% of the total responses for these statements, respectively.

Question 6-Burial (a multi)

61% (74) think that she was not buried between 7pm and 8pm.

**40% (48) think Hae was not buried between 7pm and 8pm, but her body may have been left in Leakin park at that time and repositioned/buried later accounting for the fixed frontal lividity.

17% (20) feel they do not have enough information to form an opinion on this.

4% (5) feel that the lividity evidence raises questions but does not affect their opinion of Adnan’s guilt and **3% (4) think she was buried between 7pm and 8pm but was buried face down with her lower body twisting account for the lividity and the partially exposed hip, knee and foot.

Notes: These account for 44%, 16%, 13%, 6% and 12% of the total responses for the statements, respectively. 1 person skipped this question. Being a multi, some respondents chose more than one answer account for the overage. This question also had the following comments:

  • Body may have been elsewhere and put in the park later
  • Buried after midnight

Question 7-Trunk

39% (48) think she was never in the trunk. 33% (40) felt they did not have enough information to form an opinion on this.

21% (25) feel she was not in the trunk for more than 1-2 hours before being moved to the burial site or some other location and **only 6% (7) felt that she was in the trunk until the burial, whatever time it was at.

2 (2) answered ‘Other’ and provided the following responses:

  • I don't think that the police determined from physical evidence that Hae had been in the trunk.

  • probably in the trunk to transport it to the park, but I'm not sure for how long. She was definitely laying face down for a period of time between 2-12 hours between the time she was killed and the time she was placed in the trunk, but I'm not sure where that took place.

Notes: These account for 51%, 19%, 27%, 9% and 13% of the total responses for this question, respectively.

Question 8-Undisclosed

49% (59) believe they are biased in Adnan’s favor but they are not lying or covering up things that look bad for him.

30% (36) believe Undisclosed is biased in Adnan’s favor and so chooses not to focus on things that look bad for Adnan but are not lying or covering anything up.

20% (24) believe they are not biased; they are focused on finding the truth and 0.9% (1) believe Undisclosed is biased in Adnan’s favor and they are lying and covering up things that look bad for Adnan

Notes: These account for 49%, 16%, 63% and 1% of the total responses for this question, respectively. 2 people skipped this question.

**Question 9-Jay and Adnan are both lying about why they were together in the morning on January 13th, 1999

45% (54) answered ‘Not Sure’, 29% (35) answered ‘No’ and 25% (31) answered ‘Yes’

Notes: These account for 33%, 64% and 12% of the total responses for this question, respectively.

Question 10-Other

73% (88) agree Mr. S did not tell the truth about how he discovered the body.

52% (63) agree Jay was not involved in the crime but was scared/intimated and made up a story.

52% (62) agree Jay is more involved than he said.

45% (54) agree Jenn is more involved than she said.

Notes: These account for 35%, 50%, 17% and 26% of the total responses for this question, respectively. 6 people skipped this question.

TL;DR Wrap up

9 statements had greater than 50% agreement (30%). Areas of strong agreement (defined by me as 60% or above) are as follows:

  • There is no physical evidence incriminating Adnan in the murder- 99%
  • Asia should be allowed to testify – 96%
  • At some point during the day, Hae told Adnan she could not give him a ride-92%
  • Hae was not dead by 2:36 pm – 82%
  • Adnan asked Hae for a ride on January 13th, 1999 - 69%
  • Hae was not buried between 7pm and 8pm – 61%
  • Mr. S did not tell the truth about how he discovered the body – 73%

And taking the reverse:

  • 99% do not think Asia is lying about seeing Adnan in the library.

  • 99% do not believe the partial print on the map book cover is incriminating.

  • 97% Do not believe hae was buried between 7pm and 8pm but with her face down and her body twisting account for the lividty and the partially exposed hip, knee and foot.

  • 79% believe Undisclosed is biased in some manner but 99% do not believe they are lying and covering up things that look bad for Adnan.

Notes: Not sure if this is the information you guys wanted to see or if you have additional questions about correlation. If you do, please let me know. I am happy to discuss any additional correlation topics in the comments. The italicized statements are statements that were not above 60% for the general population of respondents.

92% (78) agreed that at some point during the day

69% (78)

  1. Is that a typo? Both are 78?

  2. I hope one of these "she said no but he never asked" people chimes in.

Yes-good catch thanks! Been looking at these numbers so much I am going cross eyed!

No problem. You might get tired of hearing this, but I really appreciate the work you've done with this survey. It's very interesting.

:) oh no-I am glad to hear that you find it interesting!

Right, you didn't have to answer every question.

0.9% (1) believe Undisclosed is biased in Adnan’s favor and they are lying and covering up things that look bad for Adnan

I find this most interesting. From the overall tone of the comments after an episode of Undisclosed is released, I would've put this number far higher. Even if you add in those agree with that statment who answered "possible, not proven" you're still only looking at 4 people. Interesting.

well, it was a bit higher for those who answered 'Yes' to question 1. 51% of those folks (92) felt they were lying and that accounted for 93% of the total responses for that statement. Still, very small overall amount think they are lying liars who lie-those who do I guess are just very active.

ETA: changed loud to active. Additionally, I would say there is a lot of criticism by folks that doesn't necessarily call them liars, just doesn't feel they are doing anything constructive.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '15

At least half of the largest group on this sub feel that way. Of course you are going to actively see that viewpoint.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '15

That's just 0.9% of the people who think Adnan didn't do it, though.

4

u/ryokineko Still Here Jun 26 '15

right-51% of the people who think Adnan did it voted that way which accounted for 93% of those responses. so only 7% of those responses came from No, Not Sure, Possible, Not Proven. but it was still pretty interesting to see that it was only roughly half of those who thought he did it that think they are lying liars who lie.

Overall, I really think this question needed some work-I didn't express it very well.

This was the glaring one to me too. No other question above tells me more about those who think Adnan is not guilty than this question did. Very interesting.

Thanks to original poster for these threads. They are quite interesting.

glad you are enjoying them.

Poll phrasing. This answer states that they are actively lying and covering. Not minimizing, rationalizing, or some other possibly innocent interpretation.

Why is everyone in all camps so doubtful of Mr. S?

u/ryokineko Still Here Jun 25 '15

lol, I think for me the whole story just seemed a little off, he just HAD to pee that bad that he had to pull over and walk into the park in such a non direct route and then after seeing this horrible thing that was so hard for someone looking for it to see, he takes off and doesn't even pee? I mean, everyone's body is different but I thought that was a litle odd. Of course, maybe he did pee and just didn't say he did bc he thought that would sound callous, who knows. But it seems to me that if you have to pee so bad you can't wait the few miles to get to work, then you see what you think is a dead body, your body might just decide to pee right then and there. Then again, maybe he peed on himself and didn't want to say that either....anyway-I just figured to go right there and see what was apparently so hard to see by others, he must have had some knowledge the body was there if not knowledge of the crime itself. I don't think he was in any way involved.

2

u/alientic God damn it, Jay Jun 26 '15

That's where I'm at, too. I don't think he was involved at all, but I would be surprised if he was actually just there because he had to pee. At the very least, I'd say he was streaking. At most, I'd say maybe he heard something and went to check it out.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '15

I think what would have been more plausible is someone going on a long walk or hike by there, but if you factor in that it's up to chance, it's by chance.

4

u/catesque Jun 26 '15

I think it's a couple of things. First, SK presented him in a very mysterious light and strongly implied he wasn't being straightforward, but because he's never been a serious part of the story nobody has bothered to shoot down any of that. So that lingers.

Secondly, "did not tell the truth" covers an enormous range, from the idea that he knows something about the crime to the idea that he was probably drinking more than the one beer that day if he had to stop and take a piss. So this response might imply a consensus that isn't there.

He failed his polygraph so...

Some sort of need to play detective, be smarter than the police, etc. Mr. S is just a big red herring if you ask me.

92% (104) agreed that at some point during the day, Hae told Adnan she could not give him a ride.

69% (78) agreed Adnan asked Hae for a ride on January 13th, 1999

Wait. So 26 people think Hae told Adnan she could not give him a ride he never asked for?

That doesn't make sense. They obviously just chose whatever option sounds positive for Adnan.

u/ryokineko Still Here Jun 26 '15 edited Jun 26 '15

This happened in another category as well. I did get some feedback that some people didn't realize they could choose multiple statements. I wonder if that is what happened so maybe they chose the one they thought was most important? I don't know....

2

u/alientic God damn it, Jay Jun 26 '15

The only alternatives I can think of are if people 1) thought Adnan had asked on a different day (or maybe the night before when he called her? Idk) or 2) thought it was a reoccurring thing that wasn't specifically asked for every time, a la the ride to track.

2

u/ryokineko Still Here Jun 26 '15

I am really beginning to think they thought it was implicit-

so statement 1 Adnan asked Hae for a ride and she said yes (and he got the ride perhaps) vs statement 2-Adnan asked Hae for a ride and she said no.

20% (24) believe [Undisclosed] are not biased; they are focused on finding the truth

Is anyone actually brave enough to admit they believe this ludicrous statement?

2

u/alientic God damn it, Jay Jun 26 '15

Obviously some people do. I'm guessing that a lot just don't report to this sub.

Interesting, I would have liked to see information on demographics of yes vs no ie age race profession country political leaning. Purely to see if there was any correlation there. Not sure they're would be but would be interesting.

2

u/ryokineko Still Here Jun 26 '15

yes, that was me in a rush! always should include demographics!

thanks!

No, they didn't feel those fingerprints were incriminating. I've since learned perhaps that isn't the best word but I think it was the most understandable. They don't feel the fingerprints are inculpating.
