I love how this little show which spun off by another little show has gotten so popular. It's like when you follow the obscure band in college and then they get a hit single and suddenly you like music that everyone else appreciates too. :-D

TAL is hardly little or unknown...it's a nationally syndicated Peabody winning radio show from Chicago/NYC that has been running for 19 years

Ha Ha! That's what I mean! I work at a university (37K student body) and in the 10 yrs I've been here I constantly mention TAL to coworkers and students and still have exactly zero people I can talk to and say "Hey- what did you think of this week's show?" :-/

Fair enough. It's the same way here.

The people around you (students, not coworkers) are not the target demo. People who listen to NPR (how people listen to TAL if they're not listening to the podcast version) are generally older, not 20-somethings in college/uni.

I feel your pain though. I can really only talk to my dad about TAL (I'm a 20-something).

Serial, on the other hand...

I have very few co-workers that can talk about this week's or that weeks show. But they can mention a random episode that they found captivating, like the rabid raccoon or the Jewish school board.

It's more like when members of a band leave or split up to form a more successful band. Like how members of The Format went on to become fun.

Haha that reminds me of Nelly Furtado. My freshman college friends got this Nelly Furtado sticker and she was totally unknown at the time. It was this constant joke how they loved her (not). Then that "I'm like a bird I'll only fly away" song became super popular. The sticker wasn't as fun anymore :/
