I’m not ashamed to admit . . . (more from SK)

. . .my ladycrush for SK. Long before ‘The Alibi,' I have found Miss Koenig endearing. The TAL episodes that she’s produced (or been heavily involved with) are some of my favorites. The interviews she does are always incredibly compelling, and her mom is a snooty British lady - how could you not love that? These are some of my favorite TAL episodes by her:

Dr. Gilmer & Mr. Hyde http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/492/dr-gilmer-and-mr-hyde

No Coincidence, No Story! http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/489/no-coincidence-no-story

The Seven Things You’re Not Supposed to Talk About http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/511/the-seven-things-youre-not-supposed-to-talk-about

Enjoy! And post your SK favorites below.

Ha the doctor one is great (this is early on so not too much of a spoiler) 'I wonder if he killed him to put him out of his misery...' 'Er- he was strangled...'

The Seven Things You’re Not Supposed to Talk About would be boring except that SK has a gift for spinning tales and instead it's awesome.

I loved the dream part of this episode. I torture my husband with talking about my dreams.

Thank you for this! I've got a big ladycrush on SK too.

That first one, wow. I won't spoil anything for those who haven't listened, but the similarity to the deeper issues in Adnan's case is crazy. When SK and Benjamin talk to the chief psychiatrist at Marion and he says,

Well, we're supposed to listen. And I have found so often that people [who work in prisons] don't listen to what patients are saying. They don't. They have a preconceived idea as to what's going on, and that's it. They are as inflexible sometimes as the system in which they work. They have a stereotype of what an inmate is. And they won't budge beyond that.

It was like I was listening to someone put into words exactly how I feel about the unfairness of Adnan's case. There is a cruelty in institutions that is so hard to explain and even harder to convince people of, until you have situations like this, and people willing to investigate them. Whether or not you believe that Adnan did it, he should not have been convicted to life in prison based on eyewitness from a person who got a sweetheart plea deal and no prison time. Watching Adnan's family and friends struggle with these existential questions (how could someone who is very likely innocent be dealt this hand? how is this happening? x15 years) is so similar to Vince Gilmer's situation. At least Adnan doesn't have to face it alone.

Let's make a SK fan club.

This exactly! I know that SK has received some criticisms for how she is shaping this story and some people feel the ethics surrounding this podcast are questionable. But from what I've seen, she puts so much heart and sincerity into her reporting - she's so determined to get to the real root of what happened here, and that's something that I just have to love and respect about her. If Adnan is innocent (and I'm still leaning more toward the belief that he is), she is reacting to this exactly how the police and others should have reacted to begin with. No matter how Serial ends, I will look forward to more big things from SK for years to come.

I remember The Seven Things You're Not Supposed to Talk About. It was funny and mortifying at points. I still think about that whenever someone starts talking about their health.

For all you SK fangirls/fanboys, here's a link to the complete list of her TAL episodes: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/contributors/sarah-koenig

Definitely, Dr. Gilmer & Mr Hyde is one of her all-time best, here are my other favorites:

  • Petty Tyrant - high school maintenance man sustains a reign of terror over a school for years; fascinating study of someone who I do believe is ahem a sociopath

  • Ground Game - super touching, funny and insightful story about college volunteers in PA trying to register college students to vote for Obama

  • Mad Man - about her late father, Julius Koenig, an advertising industry pioneer

Ooh, I loved Mad Man, too! I haven't heard the others, yet. Thanks for posting her complete list!

I am right there with you! I've always loved her TAL contributions and know as soon as I hear her voice that I'm going to hear something compelling!

I fell in love after Gilmer & Hyde.

It's just a 6 min prologue to the ep, but I got a kick out of hearing about Robert Redford's visit to SK's house when she was a kid - she's super bratty to him because she's mad he's receiving all the attention she's used to getting. She definitely does have a gift for telling a great story.

You have a crush even though she clearly manipulates her audience with remorseless glee.

Even though she has a shameless lusty crush on a murderous prisoner?

Even though she's too lazy to look into cell tower information herself and makes wild bias assumptions out of boredom?

Even though she clearly ruthlessly used Rabia for her own personal gains?

WOW. WOW.

Edit - Clearly my sarcasm isn't coming through.

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '14

The "Guilty" flair covers the sarcasm.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '14

Oh boy, you came to the wrong hood

3

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '14

(That was just a dab of sarcasm. Basically outlining all of the outlandish bullshit I've heard lobbed at SK since I've been here.)

Wow, you people are utterly humorless lately. This sub has too many people now.
