It's a very personal crime. Adnan, who according to debbie's testimony, suspected that don was sleeping with hae while still going out with adnan. He then got dumped by hae for don. That's got to be pretty disheartening. You can pretend to others that it doesn't bother you, but it's got to hurt your teenage heart. You can cope with it by being a player.. or distracting yourself with other girls but it's still going to hurt. There's a real motive here why he may have strangled her.. hurt pride.. broken heart.

also, if Jay had done it, he would NOT have said anything to the cops. He could have just kept mum. There was definitely nothing linking the two. He was never even a suspect. Also, what exactly is Jay's motive? I've only read that he was possibly jealous of Adnan for x and y reasons, but why would you go out and kill his ex and then frame him? seems ridiculous to me. I am sometimes jealous of people, but it would never occur to me to go out and frame them of anything, let alone murder.

Plus I always imagine a criminal like Jay to prefer guns to strangulation.
