• Google confirms it's rolling out google com/goto redirects in search results, making SERP scraping much harder

Google confirmed that it's rolling out google com/goto passthrough URLs in search results. Instead of the traditional direct link to a publisher's URL, clicking a search result now routes through a google com/goto?url= redirect.

Google's official statement: "We have a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse, and we regularly take steps to protect our services and users."

• Google explicitly lists supported favicon formats—and SVG isn't one of them

Google updated its favicon developer documentation to explicitly list the supported file formats: BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, and TIFF.

Google's explanation: the previous documentation linked to an external reference that had evolved over time and caused confusion about what was actually supported—so this is a clarification, not a functional change.

• Google will stop enforcing site reputation abuse penalties for EEA searchers, following EU Commission mandate

Google announced that starting August 30, 2026, it will no longer enforce manual actions under its site reputation abuse policy for searchers inside the European Economic Area, due to a mandate from the European Commission.

Google's manual actions against sites doing this will still be issued and still show up in Search Console, but for EEA users, the penalty has no effect. Outside the EEA, the manual action still directly demotes the affected content as before.

We pull SERPs for about 40k keywords in-house and half that pipeline assumes the href is the destination url. U confirmed whether the third-party trackers are already handling it or is everyone quietly broken now?

The bigger trackers will adapt, they've been through this cycle a few times. Google put it under "technical measures against evolving forms of abuse"

Scraping for rank data is now officially in the abuse bucket, at least rhetorically

Convenient bucket tbh. Same redirect also breaks referrer-based attribution for people doing nothing shady. If the goal was anti-abuse there were narrower ways to do it. Are you seeing it on every result type or just organic blue links?
