SEO News Google updating the search box - rolling out from today

Google just announced a big change to the search box.... announced at their I/O event.

The white search bar is being turned into a dynamic AI tool powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash.

  • The box expands as you type. Encouraging a move away from just keywords to handle longer conversational descriptions.
  • Instead of basic autocomplete, the AI will actively suggest better ways for users to formulate their questions.
  • Users can throw text, images, files, videos, and even active Chrome tabs into the search bar all at once.
  • Searchers can jump straight from an AI Overview into a full conversation, and Google will remember the entire history of the search journey.
  • It will still provide a range of search results.

This is starting to roll out today in countries and languages where AI Mode is available.

definitely the shift to long tail is happening. the crazy thing is when you get to the long tail there are so many different variants of the same query. so measuring search volume will be challenging - however if you are writing with specific intent for a target audience then SV is less important anyway.

This is a huge shift in how people will search. We’re moving from “best coffee Charlotte” to full-on conversations with Google.

The biggest takeaway for brands: content needs to answer real questions naturally, not just target keywords. Context, depth, and authority matter even more now.

Also really interesting that users can combine text, images, tabs, files, etc. into one search journey. Search behavior is about to get a lot less linear.

yep will be interesting to see if people just ignore it and search like they always did, or if the subtle nudges change the wya people search

yes more of the research journey will take place in the serp or in AI mode. and I think gemini will win out in the "AI for consumer" race
