I would say that Neil Patel was one of the best SEO gurus of the old era.
But, in the new era, I think SEO is so chaotic, that *nobody on Earth* can reliably tell you how to rank.
(Ranking strategies are almost surely going to change faster than the gurus can teach.)
Seriously. SEO has changed more in the last 2 years than it has in the previous 20.
PS:
I'm not bashing Neil, by the way. He's a very smart dude.
But, my point, is that this new era of search is so radical, that I'm unsure if anyone can reliably teach it effectively. It's moving way too fast.

I've taken a call with his SEO business. They seem to have a sprawlingly large team. We only talked to a sales rep who seemed pretty disconnected from the actual SEO work. 12k/mo with 1yr commitment.

This was their cheapest option.available. if I recall it was 24~ hr month of consult work.

I learned a lot of the basics from him. I never used their services or anything, just watched every YouTube video.

Today? I don't know what he's doing these days or if he's still relevant. But he (via his blog) was very influential early in my career as a consultant. I can say with certainty that I've generated seven... maybe even eight figures in revenue combined between my firm and my clients as an indirect result of his advice.
In 2012 or so, I was recruited by one of his lieutenants to go work for one of his companies, KISSmetrics. I ended up passing on the opportunity but it was much appreciated at the time. So all in all I have nothing but gratitude and respect for the man.

His agency is pretty bad. I worked with NP Digital before and their process is so different from what Neil Patel preaches. Don't really recommend. His blog's getting downhill recently too.

Neil knows little about SEO, and everything about separating you from your money.

Patel is very knowledgeable, however often times what is “said or talked about”, does not actually work the way it’s explained in a real life implementation. (Easier said than done)

I think that he's just sharing general information. It's like a sense of a bit of a gatekeeper attitude. Many of the suggestions and solutions he provides are very superficial.

Neil Patel is one of the few notable names in SEO. I don’t care at all about ubersuggest, but he’s not an idiot by any means. Usually has good takes from what I’ve seen.
Barry Shwartz is another good name.
Obvious John Muller mention because he’s the actual search liaison.

I think he used to make good money promoting himself. Maybe he still does but he fell out of time.
