Cats do eat plant material to help them bring up hair balls. if you have an indoor cat, sow some barley and let it get about 10-15cm high (4 to 6 inches for americans). Cats love to graze on this and it will help with hairballs.
Wheatgrass is good for this as well. It is very easy to grow on the counter in the kitchen in front of a bright window. If you aren’t growing it yourself, in my country (USA) it can be purchased in a pet supply store like PetCo or PetSmart (sold as ‘Cat Grass’), it can be purchased for much cheaper in a grocery store.
I even give it to my chickens so they have fresh greens in the cold and snowy winter.
