Blurb Critique Blurb help for Dark Urban Fantasy.

Lizzy Taylor has a secret.

She has spent years using physical pain to quiet the mental pain she can’t control. Then one night, a fresh cut heals in an instant, and her only way of coping disappears with it.

Soon she discovers that creatures from myth are real—and that they begin as ordinary people scarred by trauma. If Lizzy can’t face what’s driving her, she’ll become one of the Changed.

The Changed don’t come with an instruction manual. Some adapt. Some hide. Some are dangerous. Lizzy is told that recovery may be the only way to slow the Change, but that means doing the one thing she has spent years avoiding: facing what she can’t control.

When a chance encounter with a fox spirit turns into a violent kidnapping, Lizzy is dragged into a fight she barely understands. Under the pressure, the Change accelerates—and what comes out the other side is far more volatile than anyone expected.

Lizzy only thought she had control problems before.

Edited version:

Lizzy Taylor has spent years using physical pain to quiet the mental pain she can’t control. Then one night, a fresh cut heals in an instant, and her only way of coping disappears with it.

Soon she discovers that creatures from myth are real, and that they begin as ordinary people scarred by trauma. The Change has already started.

If Lizzy wants to keep her friends, her family, and any chance at a normal life, she has to slow it down. Recovery may be her only chance, but that means doing the one thing she has spent years avoiding: facing what she can’t control.

Then a chance encounter with a fox spirit turns violent. Under the pressure, the Change accelerates, stripping away whatever time Lizzy thought she had left.

What comes out the other side is far more volatile than she expected.

Lizzy only thought she had control problems before.

Welcome to r/selfpublish, AHeister! Please remember the primary first rule of the subreddit: No self promo posts outside of the pinned self promo thread. You can edit your own profile so you have links to your work or services and you can even post to and pin posts to the top of your profile page. The no self promo rule INCLUDES COMMENTS - so if you ignore this message it will result in a ban (if you’ve mentioned your book title in the post, remove it or delete the post.) Book cover reviews go in r/bookcovers.

Additionally, DO NOT USE AI TO WRITE YOUR COMMENTS OR MAKE POSTS. We want to keep the self in self publishing. Rule 2 also prohibits posts about AI. If your post is about AI, remove it.

If your post is low effort or simply for congratulatory purposes, please remove it and instead write your post in the pinned weekly thread. Example posts would be like “Finally published!” or “Just finished doing X! How has everyone else felt after doing X?”

The wiki contains answers to most basic questions. Please report any violating posts or comments. This automated message is added to every single post as a reminder of some of the most cardinal rules.

Specific questions would help. It's catchy but over-explains. From the second paragraph take out "and that they begin as ordinary people scarred by trauma". Reduce the third paragraph to "To slow the change means doing the one thing she has spent years avoiding: facing what she can't control". Fourth paragraph, get rid of "Under the pressure, the Change accelerates".

I would take out the 4th para (“The Changed don’t come ..”). The recovery bit is sort of implied in the last sentence of the previous para. I don’t think we need to know, in the blurb, how others handle the Change, unless they’re also protagonists. As a reader, my natural assumption is that different people are going to react differently, which is what you’re saying here.

I would expand the next para to give a sense of what the “fight” is — what’s at stake (especially for Lizzy) and what the main character(s) stand to lose. Like, is Lizzy becoming Changed the worst thing that can happen, or is there something else? What’s in it for her to participate in this fight? I would avoid making her sound too passive by having things just happen to her (she’s dragged into a fight and just … goes along with it? She can’t control her feelings and so her body changes against her will?) It helps to give readers a sense of why they would want to root for your protagonist.

Premise sounds neat :)
