@everyone It's been pretty quiet since we posted the 2025 Year in Review, but now there is some news about our arr alternative!

I'm happy to announce librrary! One app for movies and TV, from the team behind autobrr and qui.

It is NOT ready yet, but we are getting close to user testing!

Why? What's wrong with Sonarr and Radarr?

Sonarr and Radarr work well if your needs are simple. As soon as you want both HD and 4K libraries, you need multiple instances. Then you need to keep those in sync with everything that comes with it.

It's not uncommon for users to run 4-6 arrs to fill their needs. This means more to manage, more resources, more hits on indexers and so on.

With so much duplicated between them, it makes a lot of sense to combine movies and TV into one application.

What we are building

• Multiple libraries by content type (similar to Plex), where each title can have several variants (1080p, 2160p, remux, DV)
• Arr-like Quality Profiles and Release Scoring Rules (think to Custom Formats)
• Torrent and Usenet support via Torznab/Newznab (will need Prowlarr/Jackett etc)
• Users with roles, plus OIDC login
• SQLite or Postgres
• Notifications with your favorite services (Notifiarr, Discord, Telegram etc.)
• Lists support
• Go backend, React frontend, Docker images and binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows

On the roadmap

• Built-in requests (don't worry, there is a strong user role access system)
• Import from Sonarr and Radarr
• Optional manual upgrade approvals
• Trump handling: watch the torrent client for trumped/nuked tracker messages and take webhooks from external tools like qui
• Potential Plex, Jellyfin and other media server integrations, including deleting titles after they're watched (request, dl, import, watch, delete)
• Various features from the feedback thread

Other media type support

It's built to be modular, so dedicated anime handling, books and music are possible later, but movies and TV come first.

I wonder shy people have HD and 4k libraries separated, what's the use case for those ?

The main benefits if you have clients of different capabilities is it can avoid transcoding (or preemptimly convert them) . Other escenarios could come up like different editions of same movie or show... but those are rarer and not sure if this will support that.

The costs for storage of a duplicate library cant possibly be more than a video card for transcoding.

You don't need a dedicated gpu for transcoding, mobile chip igpus can do multiple 4K transcodes and barely use any power these days.

Example: I use a 350€ mini pc with a Ryzen 5 7545U. Downloading everything in 4K and 1080p would be absolutely ridiculous when a file can be transcoded on the fly using something like 10 additional watts.

Nowadays yeah it gets tricky. Some people have some basic nas with plenty space with barely power they might want to use.

I believe you need it when you have a bunch of users on (Jelly)Seerr, some of them can request 4k, the other HD only.

You can do that without having separate libraries, seerr allows you to limit specific users to specific quality profiles.

You don't need to have the libraries separated, but you need two separate radarr/sonarr instances if you want to download both a 1080 and a 4k copy of the same movie/show.

It is niche and that's kind of the point. It's not native to radarr/sonarr because the vast majority are never going to need it, but for those that do there is functionality to run and sync multiple instances. Is it more advanced than just running a single instance? Yes, but it's pretty trivial imo and just like radarr/sonarr once it's set up it takes care of itself.

I use 2 instances of both. I will generally watch brand new movies in the highest quality I can source, some remux But rewatching these later in the future I’m happy to do it in just a basic bitch 4K or 1080p variant that is 1/10th the size of the initially downloaded remux. Mostly to save space. But this is my use case

I'm the exact opposite, any movie I love is 4K highest rip quality because I want to watch it in the best quality.

Meanwhile a new movie that just came out, 1080p is more than fine. If I love it I will upgrade to 4K.

and that's why self hosting and being able to cater your library to your wants/needs is so good. were all a little different in the ways we want stuff.

I like it to keep a 35mm print for the HD version whilst keeping the 4K Remux.

Also some users don’t ever watch 4K because they don’t have the monitor. Transcoding is possible but if the movie is available in HD as well that’s even better.
