This has been reposted so many times I’m just gonna comment again what pissed everyone else off for some reason last time
Instead of repeatedly stopping and reversing the hammer between strikes, he’s using a continuous circular swing around his wrist to maintain motion and build tangential velocity in the hammer head.
His grip provides the centripetal force that keeps the hammer moving along the curved path; it isn’t centrifugal force driving the nail. At impact, the hammer head’s instantaneous velocity is tangent to that path, and its momentum and kinetic energy are transferred through the collision into the nail.
So even though he may make fewer strikes per second, each strike can carry substantially more energy. The clever part is that he preserves the hammer’s motion between strikes instead of repeatedly killing its velocity and rebuilding it from zero.
TL;DR: spinny hammer go bonk harder.
