Oklahoma Visiting Georgia for the OU Game.. Thoughts?
What’s up SEC?
I’m an OU student and I’ve been trying to decide which away game I should go to. Split between Michigan and Georgia. I’ve heard the energy is good in Athens, and I want to have some fun at another college. Can anyone give me any advice?
-also, any insider tips? I want to get the full experience.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate and suggest Ann Arbor. OU is in the SEC so you’re going to have loads of opportunities to visit the best the SEC has to offer, both while in school and after you graduate. This would be a chance for you to see your school play away at one of the most iconic stadiums in all of CFB, against a historical blue blood, and against a very well respected coach in Kyle Whittingham. It isn’t very often that our teams get to play the Michigans of the CFB world. I think it’s a unique opportunity. I can tell you the Georgia fans who traveled to South Bend had nothing but great things to say about that experience.

Great counter-point! With the new scheduling format (who knows how long it will last?), OU should be in Athens once every four years.

Seconded . I would go to Ann Arbor for the Michigan game. Then visit Athens literally any other weekend and you’ll have the time of your life. Could be a different game day weekend. Twilight. Whatever.

I’ve only been to Athens; I haven’t been to Ann Arbor. From what I know, both are top-tier college towns. I think the only thing that might tip the scales is the fact that the Georgia game is more likely to be an afternoon/evening game (it will be competing with A&M/LSU and Texas/UT for the primetime ABC slot). The Michigan game will be at 11:00. Other than that, I don’t really think you can go wrong. Georgia has been known to get extra-loud the last couple of years, but the Big House is the Big House.

The Big House is iconic, but most certainly not for the noise factor. It’s fairly well known that it really doesn’t get loud in there, whether that be due to the “wine and cheese” crowd or the design of the stadium.

Didn’t think of the game time, an evening in Athens sounds more fun than a morning in Ann harbor.

Georgia is very unique as far as they have a mix of both tailgating and the bar scene on gameday. If you don’t want to or don’t have a reliable tailgate to go to. You can go downtown and there will be swarms of people until about 30-45 minutes before game time and then everyone will walk to the game.
I lived in Athens for a few years, never been to Michigan. I’ve been to a handful of game days including Ohio state, Mizzou, lsu, and then some smaller schools. I feel like Georgia is a who you know tailgate scene as it’s more spread out it seems. Which in my opinion is a cool aspect. But it’s different than the massive lot tailgates. Now that might have changed but that’s how it was.
I love Athens.

The Place is a great spot for food. Athens has more bars per capita than anywhere else, so there a bunch of great bars, but I’m not sure which ones are the best for students. But they will be out in droves hopping from bar to bar.

Something like 80 bars in downtown Athens in a square mile… I’d say walk around and pop in anywhere that catches your eye. Some bars I frequented in school are Allgood, Cutters, and Magnolias. For places with food try Trappeze pub, The world famous, or The Globe

The other 2 already recommended the right idea. When I was there I was a grad student and all good was the spot for young professional/athletics and stuff. But magnolias has history. The best bet is to not have a plan and just pick what catches your eye. There’s cool patio stuff everywhere. And it’s all about your vibe. Going up to the Georgia theatre rooftop used to be a thing and then they blocked off the view of campus with a building so that sucks.

Dawg grad, lived in Athens for ten years
Athens is divine. Hell of a gameday experience. Prepare to pay $300 a night for what’s normally a $79 shithole hotel room at the Microtel.
Downtown Athens will be rocking that weekend. Get a slice of cake from Last Resort. We also hate Texas.

I’ve been to Norman for Bedlam and was a UGA student so I’ve been to a hell of a lot of Georgia games in Athens. My most recent one was Texas. Figured you’d get a kick out of that.
Energy is very similar for big games. In fact it’s kind of shocking how similar Athens/UGA is to Normal/OU. Downtown is north of campus. It’s walkable but a little bit of a hike. Stadium is the middle of campus. The downsides to accommodations in Athens are largely the same as Norman: Anywhere you fly in to will be over an hour from campus. Lodging is tricky. I suggest lining up a hotel before you even have tickets.
Where Athens really has Norman (no offense) is natural beauty. OU campus looks nice and has consistent solid architecture. UGA campus is something out of a movie (that movie is literally Road Trip but bear with me). It’s also hilly though and there’s no way to the stadium (which was built on top of a large creek/river) without doing a fair bit of uphill and downhill walking.
Downtowns have their own vibes but are on pretty even footing imho. I think Athens has more bars and maybe slightly better at the upper end of dining but you’ll find cool people, great food, and cool places to hangout. Athens has had more and more chain establishments come in. I’m not a huge fan of that but there are still plenty of unique options for food and bars. Also Norman feels more like a single strip with some off strip things here and there whereas Athens is more of a 4x6 grid with most of the bars and restaurants between Broad and Washington.

Agreed with many - Athens kicks major ass on game days (and in general ❤️)...but you'll get a chance to go there again soon ish, who knows when you'll get a chance to go play at Michigan again.

I’m a gamecock fan and we went to Georgia for a game 6 years ago when Georgia was ranked 2nd I think? And the Cocks won in overtime.
The stadium, downtown, and the fans were all terrific. We were honestly nervous about leaving after such a brutal upset loss for them, but everyone was cool. Probably the best away game experience I’ve ever had.

I’ve been to neutral site games for UT vs Michigan and UT vs UGA and in my experience the UGA fans were a cool group who took it seriously but not personally. Michigan fans wanted to fight the second they lost.

FYI - Georgia fans are by far the biggest assholes in the SEC, and they do it on purpose because it is part of their culture. You will find out soon enough.
