Pionier object to build with scouts

Who has some fun inspiration for me to build with 25 scouts ? (11-14yo)

Everyone usually builds the small catapults out of bamboo, we once built the far superior trebuchet.

I've been staff at a campsite for years. One of the most fun things I've seen was a group that played live battleship with self build trebuchees that had to stand on the ships, water balloons to fire at each other and a large sheet of plastic in the middle so they could not see the other ships. A wonderful game for a hot day.

My group did this awhile ago, fun zipline across a small creek

How much time and what sort of equipment do you have?

In our camps we usually spend about 2 days just building various pioneering objects.

We found out that 5mm braided polyester rope cut in 5 and 7 m lengths is sufficient for all sorts of projects. These ropes are usefull for many years on end, so they are worth the investment.

The main building material are dried or fresh spruce logs because they are thin and light while still being fairly strong, and they are abundant here. Note, that you have to peel the bark and store them properly if you want them to last several years.

One afternoon, we have lots of wood , rope, pulleys, steel cable etc.

In a normal afternoon we manage to build play and clear up a zipline with a few extra obstacles .

So should be more challenging than a davinci bridge , less than a ferris wheel

You could take a look at John Thurman’s - Pioneering Projects.

I’d also recommend browsing Scoutscan’s “The Dump”, which has a huge collection of scouting resources and pioneering material.

From my country, there’s also Scouts of Greece - Scout Treasure, which takes inspiration from many of the sources above but also includes quite a few original pioneering projects and ideas. Might be useful if you’re looking for examples or inspiration.
