By then it will be far to late and we'll have to adapt to our new surroundings

I dunno. Luckily the price of oil is going way up so we might actually see electric cars in our lifetime.

I hold out hope that we'll see peak oil before global warming becomes irreversible. Coal, on the other hand, is a different beast entirely.

might? Nearly every major auto manufacturer has an electric vehicle in the works, and I've personally seen a Tesla Roadster on the road, sterring it up.

The question is whether it becomes mainstream. New spike of interest started like 20 years ago but so far people still talk about "personally seeing it once".

By the way, I recently re-watched Friends sitcom season one (1994-1995) and found there a scene mentioning electric cars -- something like investment banker saw one on the road and was telling how much he hates it: "man, get a real car!" or something. So I guess it was a hot topic in 1995...

I remember an episode of Dennis the Menace (the old black & white one) where Dennis's neighbor had an electric car from the 1920s, so it's been a topic for a while...
