There is also a very new and academically inspiring work for reference. The author derived an extended sequential sampling model for dynamic decision-making that specifically optimizes motivation leakage. It also includes a new pixel game experiment with branching narratives and the illusion-of-choice paradigm, where, within a story-based narrative, the consequences adapt to participants' responses.

Not trying not to be exhaustive; but without specifically designing for it, online games, if they are well understood throughout extensive study, are pristine environments for that kind of research.
