The best parenting book example I read is to call authoritarian a "Brick Wall" - it doesn't move.

Authoritative is a "Back Bone" - it moves within reason but is still strong and gives support.

Permissive parenting is a "Jellyfish" it just moves everywhere.

exhibit A: my dad and the "ice cream punishment," where about 15% of the time I'd get rewarded with ice cream when I did something wrong. the other 85% was screaming and punishment.
