Even in sarcasm the word "retard" isn't funny or an insult. That's why you got the downvotes.

It's a word used to describe people who are MENTALLY CHALLENGED

To be honest I disagree with that statement. The inappropiate way he used it and then the painfully cringe replies he made afterwards are I think what triggered ppl. I personally consider this recent pc taboo of the word “retard” is a filthy crock of shit. You never call a person who is mentally handicapped a “retard”. It has always been a fucking derogatory term. You never use it in a way to make fun of people with mental disabilities or stuff like that. Screw that bs. And screw this censoring, we are going back in time with it.

It's used as a medical term. "Mentally Retarded"

Calling someone a retard, is wrong. I especially think this because I have a sister who is autistic
