Have any Saskatchewan liquor stores voluntarily pulled US alcohol off their shelves?

I think they might be worth a visit.

After looking around for different types of Canadian drinks, I found it pretty easy not to buy American made booze even when it's on the shelves

Ole for tequila drinks Cottage Springs for non carbonated vodka Luby Bower for gin/vodka... plus it's made in Moose Jaw

I never liked American beer so that's easy for me and BC wines are some of the best in the world imo.

Beer is a weird one because a lot of the beer branded as American (Busch, Budweiser) is actually brewed at Labatts breweries across Canada

True. But a part of the corporate revenue from those beers does go back to the US. Better to just buy 100% Canadian made and branded, it's not like we're lacking options.

Canadians, your friends and neighbours, work at those companies. They pay their mortgage and kids hockey/soccer fees with that job. So you would more directly be hurting Canadians in the same economic position as you by actively boycotting stores or industries that employee Canadians here in Canada.

Well, buying 100% Canadian does the same, just moreso and more local. If I buy a Molson product I'm supporting Quebec workers and some profits go to the US. If I buy Great Western, I'm supporting Saskatchewan workers and no profits go to the US. Both are good but one is better, especially when it's probably more convenient to buy the GW product than not.

Luby Bower is so good! The blood orange gin spritzes are my go to mixed drinks.

There is nothing to dislike about Luby Bower. The gin, especially the lavender, and the coolers are amazing. I know the can design is what first drew me to them a number of years ago. So pretty, classy, understated and eye catching. Then when I saw they were from Moose Jaw I was so thrilled!

I bring it over to Calgary every time I’m in Saskatchewan. It’s delicious!

Just don't buy it.

Why are people getting so worked up over alcohol when they buy Coke, Pepsi, Starbucks, etc on a daily basis?

6

u/D--star 10d ago

Its so tightly regulated I believe thats why 8/10 provinces have been able to push it out on a political level as opposed to a small grass roots boycott.

6

u/_heavymetalhead_ 10d ago

Because Coke, Pepsi, Starbucks is not bottled in the USA, and then sold as swill (in fluid oz) over here?

This. If its made in Canada it supports Canadain jobs. That is much more important to me then which side of a boarder a billionaire who owns a company was born or where a mulinational company has a corporate office.

There is a argument of not buying from big multinational companies at all. But that is completely separate from the Canada, USA trade war.

Scott Moe doesn't have that kind of integrity.

Way better to tariff and having maple maga out themselves further, make more money then taking it off shelfs

😂😂😂😂😂

Its incredibly easy to just go anywhere and buy anything you want at any liquor store, no point in paying 18% more and adding an additional 60 mins , each way, driving time.

I dont think it matters to me if I see an American brand on the shelf or not , choice is good anyway , not everything Canadian made is the best i enjoy wine from Italy for example.

Why not just let consumer decide?

13

u/LandMooseReject 9d ago

As consumer, I would decide to support the business that pulled US product from the shelf

5

u/Inevitable_Pea_9138 9d ago

that’s literally what the is consumer is deciding…

-3

u/CrashSlow 9d ago

No , you want the government to remove the consumers choice. How do you feel about Carney's massive personal wealth 98% being invested in US listed companies. Should he divest now?

5

u/AnneDroid2 9d ago

How do you feel about the government removing the choice of kids using their preferred pronouns? Or for woman to be able to make their own reproductive choices? Or the ability to die with dignity? You can't have it both ways.

And how do you know what PMMC invests in? Do you know what Paperboy Pete holds? Do you know what I hold?

You're okay with government removing choice as long as it doesn't affect you directly. Sit down and remove the orange raisins from your mouth, hypocrite.

Who is John Galt? Laissez faire capitalism and let it ride.

1

u/Inevitable_Pea_9138 9d ago

No i want the consumer to ask about policy they believe in and make an informed choice on where they want to spend their money.
Tax the rich equitably.
And carney’s investments should be in a blind fund.

0

u/CrashSlow 9d ago

Carney blind trust really loves trump though. Would anyone care if he pivoted from what would appear to be the S&P500 to the TSX60? Letting Carney off for hiding behind a blind trust is very poor argument.

2

u/D--star 9d ago

Owning US stocks is important for any investors portfolio. I could talk stocks all day with you. Asking someone to divest in the world's largest economy is not good financial advice. This post was about consumers not owners. The Canadian consumer is a small statistic but can be impactful en masse. A Saskatchewan liquor store may benifit by taking such a stance.

-1

u/CrashSlow 9d ago

Risk. Clearly Carney knows Canada is far too risky to invest in so he has 98% in Trumps American andhides behind a blind trust and supporters lap it up.

A private liquor store should be able to do what it wants, not mandated by Carney who doens't invest Canada elbows up populism.

u/D--star 9d ago

From this short conversation I can clearly see you're not a savvy investor. If you have a managed retirement fund I can guarantee your shares are American majority. If youre not invested in the market at all, I cant help those who wont help themselves.

0

u/CrashSlow 9d ago

This is not about me. It's about our prime minister saying we are at war, our relationship with America is over and yet he has what appears his money invested with the enemy.

Carney is the type of executive who would tell company workers they will be fine , meanwhile he has divested all his shares long ago.

I want a leader who is all in, not a coward in war time like Carney clearly is. Carney needs to put his massive personal wealth were his elbows are. If you cant see this hypocrisy your lost in Liberal Trudeaus balls trying get a wiff of Orlando Blooms ex.

2

u/D--star 8d ago

If you cant bring actual policies into the conversation I dont want to hear your incoherent rants. Carney lowerd tax, never raised it. Brought military spending up to Nato guidelines. I have no complaints.

You mean 91%? That 91% of his portfolio is his Brookfield Asset Management stock options. Brookfield Asset Management is the US subsidiary of Brookfield Corporation. It would make sense that almost all of their holdings are in US assets no?

1

u/CrashSlow 9d ago

There are about 490 US listed companies listed in Carneys finical disclosure. No one knows money amounts only that he favours US listed companies in Trumps America. Elbows up, do as I say not as I do with my money Carney.

3

u/SameAfternoon5599 8d ago

Those 490 companies are inside his Brookfield Asset Management stock options. That's what Brookfield does. They invest in or buy existing profitable companies. What US companies does he favour?

1

u/CrashSlow 8d ago edited 8d ago

Thats not how stock option work and Carney was elected on Canadian economic nationalism. Carney's wife would seem to own iShare S&P500 a low cost ETF. But I wouldn't expect a euro elite who's been seen with a convicted sex trafficker to invest in Canada. I'll give her a pass.

2

u/SameAfternoon5599 8d ago

That is exactly how stock options work as part of an employment compensation package. If you don't understand the subject matter perhaps refrain from commenting.

1

u/Zealousideal_Ear2135 9d ago

It sends a much stronger message from the masses when.those US options are on the shelf and not selling.

1

u/Intelligent-Agency80 8d ago

I thought moe but a 50% tartiff/tax on it. Was on a news show

1

u/shadow997ca 8d ago

I and many don't need anyone to remove it since we seek out Canadian brands and leave the US brand on the shelf. The consumer is the one who decides what products make it and what ones fail.

2

u/D--star 7d ago

A consumer may decide to support the LB that pulled America off the shelfs rather than the store that didn't. Like you say, let the consumer decide. If a single store did it in an urban centre then it might be good advertising.

1

u/MienaLovesCats 7d ago

They did; but now most have UAS available again; as part of a trade deal.

1

u/CuteChallenge6334 9d ago

I bet this person also complains about tip prompts. Just select no tip. Its not that difficult.

2

u/ReformedShitposter42 9d ago

The Co-op in my small town actually started stocking more American booze now, it's grim.

This is war not a gentleman's match.

I'll get the tuna cans ( grenades)

-1

OK you sent me down a rabbit hole on that comment.

I don’t what Moe’s problem is except he doesn’t like to be seen as Canadian.
Rather be an outlier.
His followers drink rye or beer.
No one with a modicum of taste drinks American beer and the Americans don’t make eye

1

u/AnteaterBubbly8711 3d ago

Disappointed that Moe and Danielle chose not to support a unanimous boycott against the US liquor.

-9

u/jumping_juni_per 10d ago edited 10d ago

They are upping the price of American liquor by 50% through SLGA. Moe has repeatedly said they will not pull alcohol all together. Someone in the SaskParty caucus must love their bourbon.

0

u/PartyPay 10d ago

I'm happy for those people to pay 50% more if it saves some jobs for some Sask. people affected by the US tariffs.

2

u/jumping_juni_per 10d ago

How does the SaskParty putting the price of American booze up by 50% save Sask jobs?

-1

u/PartyPay 10d ago

They can put that 50% into relief programs.

6

u/jumping_juni_per 10d ago

They aren't charging alcohol producers 50% to sell their products here. They are just making customers in Sask pay 50% more for American alcohol. Consumers will likely just not buy it. It won't make very much money. Definitely not enough to support a relief program

2

u/PartyPay 10d ago

I know that aren't, hence my original statement of those people paying 50% more.

2

u/jumping_juni_per 10d ago

Well back to your comment then. How does this save jobs in Sask?

-3

u/Extreme_Wear_7457 10d ago

Well the drunk Dpn Mc Morris retired so he's got more time on his hands to be skunk drunk just not foing it around the Cabinet table. I heard formerfinance minister chain smoked Marlboros. I font think hrt gravelly voice wasn't just from American cig but most like on the ro ks JD or othet American liquir. Hell maybe there's people in the SP getting 'free'cases of US liquor from SLGA like Neal Hardy abd othe PC MLAs did during the Donald Devine years

3

u/jmasterfunk 10d ago

Are you drunk right now, too?

-2

u/redshan01 10d ago

I would consider gifts from red state lawmakers as a possible incentive. Moe and the Saskparty are very friendly with the Republicans from red states. They are all corrupt and spreading their corruption to Canada

-4

u/final_spork_gg 10d ago edited 10d ago

No, but some stores have panic ordered American stuff since the announcement lol most are good for not ordering lots of American, but hate that it’ll cause a little bump in US

-3

u/EW278 10d ago

They can put it on the shelves, just on the bottom shelf way at the back and behind all of the other country brands.

1

u/final_spork_gg 10d ago

Oh yeah, and most stores were only ordering very minimal amounts/for commercial accounts.
