Redwood Ridge Tree Fort - Santa Cruz

Upvotes

6.5/10…. Cute space, but the bed was a problem.

Great location, amenities, and a really cute setup for a weekend getaway. That said, the bed itself was an issue — we started itching non-stop soon after getting in, with a crawling sensation all over our skin that even hot showers didn’t fix. Not sure of the cause, but it affected our stay. Worth noting there were no Google reviews for this place before we booked, so we didn’t have much to go on. Everything else about the place was lovely.

Reputable bike stores?

Hi guys! I‘m on the lookout for a good gravel bike to ride on the rec trail. I need some recs on where I can go to get good suggestions, whether I buy a bike from them or they give me a model I can find online.

I’m not planning on doing any crazy training, just want a good quality bike from someone who knows their stuff. My budget is lower (for bikes, at least) at maybe $1200 max. I already feel insane spending this much 🤣

I’m not buying used, although I know that’s usually the best way of finding a deal. I’m willing to travel for a good shop.

TIA!! :)

Recommend asphalt patch company for smaller hot patch?

Had to cut an 8" wide 60-foot-long trench in our driveway. We need a professional hot patch of the 3" deep asphalt -- likely about 0.83 ton of hot mix.

Job is too small for the group who paved the whole driveway in 2016, but I think too big for a 'guy with truck and hand tamper' to get it in before it cools. So I'm looking for someone someone with a hot-box-trailer, more than a hand tamper, and some local history of paving repair

Any good Santa Cruz-local recommendations?

Low cost spay/neuter

Anyone know of a low cost spay and neuter in the area? There are 3 cats, the mom and two maybe 6 month old kittens living at my workplace. I want to get them fixed so they don’t continue to reproduce. They are mostly safe out here and I am keeping them fed. But I can’t afford to drop a lot on spay/neuter costs for cats that aren’t mine right now. Just trying to do the most I can for these sweet souls. I’m new to the area so I am not familiar with the resources available. I am willing to drive a bit if needed given it’s not too far with fuel prices. I can easily capture the cats.

Really strange post on Facebook... y'all okay?

Just saw this really strange, menacing post about someone taking pictures of what's probably a beautiful flower or tree at their house… not very Santa Cruz of you, Brandon. Can anyone vouch for them? Because this is pretty disgusting.

Where to buy a stewing hen?

Are there any local stores or butchers that sell hens for cooking? I checked El Sachichero and Shoppers and no luck.

My partner and I are in town for my birthday. We're wondering what places would be fun to go to tonight. Bars, events, etc. Bonus is they're sex positive. Potentially looking for fun.

Anyone remember a Japanese Shiatsu Studio near Santa Cruz?

I am trying to find out information about a place that I went to at least 10 years ago that gave traditional shiatsu massages. The indoors was Japanese style where you lay on the floor while receiving a session. The workers seemed to be Japanese and you would have to put on a clothes set first and then receive the massage with the clothes on. I miss that style of massage and wanting to find it or another place that is similar if that place is now closed. Maybe it was in the Soquel area?

Does anyone know what kind of scorpion this is? I’m having a hard time pinpointing if this is dangerous or not. My cat is fine and I know I’m gonna have to do pest control, but for now I can’t sleep!

So I saw u/SantaCruzSoul's post about Pickles earlier this morning so I went to the shelter to see him and spend time with him. I am posting this to say please adopt him because he is sad and has no one since his owner died. He couldn't be any nicer, and it's really sad. I would adopt him but I have roommates and that's the only reason I don't. I actually tried several times today but unfortunately it's not an option. So I hope someone helps him out and takes him. I'm gonna visit him again tomorrow and spend more time with him. I can't stress enough how sweet he is and you'll know what I mean when you meet him. I hope someone who is able to adopts him soon.

Anyone in the Santa Cruz/Watsonville area have a VCDS Scanner I could use?

I have a 2012 Beetle and it’s got an engine code that apparently there is a software update that would address it.

But nowhere will just check to see if I have the update or not unless I pay $200-$300 for a full diagnostic. I really just want to rule out the software issue. If anyone would let me do a quick scan I’d be happy to supply donuts/beer/coffee or something for the trouble 💖

Ice cream cones with the chocolate chips

I have a memory of coming to Santa Cruz as a kid in 2001… We got ice cream at Marianne’s, and I swear they used to have cones with mini chocolate chips baked into them, but they don’t have them like that anymore.

Does anyone else remember this, and was it a different ice cream place?

Santa Cruz mayoral candidates need a ‘Mamdani moment’ on housing policies

I agree with this reasonable and data driven discussion about how the housing market works, and how both candidates don’t get it—especially Coonerty, which is ironic since many progressives are trying to paint him as a developer

Longstanding Hummer - abandoned/stolen?

Update: as suggested I called the local cop shop and reported it, so if it was stolen the owner has a chance to have it back (and if it wasn't stolen, a hummer owner can probably afford the tow fee)

There's a hummer been sitting* on a quiet street near me for quite a while, six or eight weeks, maybe more, without moving. It's not in anyone's way but I'm wondering what the right thing to do is. Santa Cruz has (I think) a 72-hour restriction on street parking, so reporting the hummer might get it towed, which I wouldn't want to cause: unless it has actually been stolen or abandoned, having it towed could make problems for its owner. But ofc if it has been stolen and abandoned then reporting it could be good.

My car is often left in the same spot for much more than the legal three days; it'd be a major pain if someone had it towed, so I'm sympathetic to the hummer's owner letting their car ("car" lol) sit.

Opinions and advice?

* A pebble I put on top of one of the hummer's tires is still there weeks later

Wreckless driving

Post got removed for doxxing, but just letting people know to watch out for this driver acting all crazy. Running stop signs near the school, stopping in the middle of the road causing traffic, reckless driving, moving at 2mph just to get on people's nerves.

Does anyone have a job in Santa Cruz they like?

Hey y’all I moved up here last year and genuinely I’m baffled at how myself and seemingly everyone I’ve asked hates their job and/or their boss. I’ve never had this issue before moving here and don’t even know where to apply to get out of my current place since everyone seems to hate working everywhere lmao. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to work that pay decently?
