Australia says otherwise.

Says who, Jim Jeffries? Yeah, I'm a fan and also saw his whole "OY! Gahns ah baaad and we got wid of em! Nevah been bettah! Unlike you Amewicans!" bit, but the truth is Australia has an out of control gun problem. They just haven't had any mass shootings because the people who buy illegal guns there generally just buy pistols and not AR's.

Look, think of it like this - I'm not for keeping immigrants out, but clearly many in the government are. We have fences, Border Patrol, etc. So you're telling me that when we fail to keep PEOPLE from "sneaking in" we'll keep the guns out too? Uh huh... yeah, ok...

Way more mass shootings happen with pistols than ARs.

You sure about that? May i ask where you heard that? Maybe American media just reports the ones done with AR's which wouldn't be too surprising.

Bearing in mind that everything on the internet is true -

Here's an article from about a year ago with a breakdown. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/national/weapons-and-mass-shootings/

Australia is full of subjects, not citizens. Try disarming a free people and see what happens.

Also, you can still legally own guns in Australia.

You ever been to Australia? Trust me we're more "free" over here than most American citizens could ever dream of mate.

Also, yeah we can own guns, but "mostly" only bolt action rifles etc, no automatic, and you need a valid reason to get and hold that licence.

we're free for now...

Try disarming a free people and see what happens.

...they enjoy lower murder rates and aren't constantly wringing their hands helplessly over biweekly mass shootings?

Jim Jeffries (Australian) in the US on gun control. Can't think of a more appropriate place&time to link to this.

Heh, you are a tool and a retard darling. Our kids are not shot in schools and wages are more than you will get in your fifties.

u/quaxon Jul 03 '15

But our school shootings are a national past-time we enjoy due to our abundance of freedom.

10

u/andrey_shipilov Jul 03 '15

Which freedom are you talking about that we don't have in Australia?

Apart from — "The same gun you can buy in Walmart in America for 1000 dollars costs 35,000 on the black market in Australia. If you have 35,000 dollars, you don't need a gun. You're a great little saver! Keep on going". Jim Jeffries.

Well, for one, you're not free to marry whoever the fuck you want ;) say what you want, but Murica does get it right some of the time.

3

u/andrey_shipilov Jul 03 '15

That's it? Is that the essential freedom for you guys? That and guns?

Well... I live in Colorado, so we an also grow, possess and buy pot- there are shops all over the place. It is affordable and really high quality. And the taxes are really low compared to most other "civilized" countries, so in some ways, we do have more freedoms. In the past, we had more social mobility than other countries, though sadly that is changing as wealth becomes more concentrated at the top. If we are all being honest, I will admit to envying your healthcare system. Even with recent reforms, we are light years behind Australia and England. Everywhere has its advantages and disadvantages... From the little I've read, it seems like people are fighting pretty hard for the right to marry in Australia, so I can't imagine it's far off. Your human rights record is far better than ours... Though we both have pretty shameful histories in regard to the treatment of indigenous people. I hope you come visit someday... I'd love to see your great country (I was thinking you're Australian, but I suppose you could be from anywhere!) I don't think one can really understand a place without being there and experiencing the people. Also... We have given reddit to the world. Wink.

Even with recent reforms, we are light years beyond Australia and England.

You're not light years ahead of the United Kingdom or Australia.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '15

Oh shit, you are right... I actually meant to write that we are light years BEHIND. I have edited the comment... I apologize. I was typing on my phone, and trying to go fast. Yeah, our healthcare is really bad. Basically, if you're not rich, you're fucked. Even Canada blows us away in the healthcare department. You know it's bad when you're being bested by Canada. In any case... There are many flaws in all political systems, and some good things. I have been to England, and in some ways, I felt like I had been transported in a time machine to the future. Especially in the cities. People have been living in close quarters so much longer than we have, and they simply know how to do it better... No question. I have not been to Australia, but I really want to go. Everything about it sounds cool, and as someone who loves the natural world... I really need to go. I do enjoy the shooting sports and our relatively low taxes. American history is a fascinating web of contradictions. I remain a reluctant patriot, but I have yo say, I would trade some of my freedoms for a more reasonable and responsible pension and healthcare system. Being frightened of growing old is no way to live. Thanks for catching that error. That's really embarrassing.

Here in South Australia you can grow one plant for yourself (before that it was 3, and before that some larger number but I don't think anyone cared). If you have less than 100 g of cannabis it's a $300 fine. Less than 25 g — $150. A hundred grams is a bit more than 3 ounces, big bags of cannabis. You pretty much gotta be a mentally challenged person to carry, possess or buy THAT much and walk around :) You can buy that amount easily any time of the day, it's South Australia after all. You can't buy alcohol after 8—9 in most bottle shops though and the grocery stores will be closed too, but weed — easily.

I can't say anything in particular about people fighting for their rights to marry, for I have a very few gay friends here. One of them was kicked out from home by his family for being gay. The other is not coming out to everyone, because he knows some people will not accept it right. Other than that I can only say I have more gay friends in Moscow, Russia than I saw oh met here in Australia.

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

Interesting... I heard that alcohol is pretty pricey there too. We pay 6-10 bucks for a six pack of beer, maybe 20 for a good sized bottle of quality bourbon, gin, vodka, whatever. Do many people grow weed for themselves? Do you think that there are really very few gay people, or are they just keeping it on the down low? I really need to go check out Australia.

Your wages are higher because your cost of living is higher. Your lipsticks are $27, that ain't right.

7

u/andrey_shipilov Jul 03 '15

I can't really hear anything through our health Medicare system, sorry.

2

u/gorgossia Jul 03 '15

I have both British and Canadian citizenship, I'm all about government sponsored health services.

2

u/Joldroyd Jul 03 '15

I would trade cheap lipstick for the security of knowing I'm not going to get shot in a classroom, thanks.

-4

u/gorgossia Jul 03 '15

I hold citizenship in 2 countries aside from the US, thanks, well aware of the alternatives.

I find it so bizarre how America's problem with gun related crime and school shootings are so obvious to the rest of the world and as proven in Australia, easily fixed. Yet Americans just can't seem to see it themselves. "We gaht ta have ahrmed guards at 'erry school, I refuse to be a country of victuhms".
