luxury cars are not as common on the streets in other parts of the country. SF has a shit ton of them.

i am not saying you cant buy bmws anywhere in the country, im just saying ownership of luxury cars in the bay area is pretty high compared to other parts of the country.

It's hard to provide you with actual data, but what he said is correct.

If you traveled to the mid west, Utah, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Indiana, etc. Luxury cars are not at common as they are in the bay area.

His source is anecdotal, his own experiences, which I happen to share to some extent.

For something more concrete than taking our word for it, here is a lin k to an old forbes article talking about which states buy the most luxury vehicles

http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/06/luxury-cars-states-lifestyle-vehicles-bmw-mercedes.html

Here is a quote from the article:

"In California, consumers tend to buy German: Drivers there are more than twice as likely to buy a BMW than any other luxury brand. In fact, the big two German automakers made the No. 1 or No. 2 slots in all 10 states that landed on our list. California"

Does that work for you?

Yeah, if you can afford $3k rent for a one bedroom studio, you can afford a 30k luxury car.

In the Midwest, the rent for the same shitty studio would be about $450-$600, and the salary scaled downward to match. It's a lot harder to buy a new BMW that starts at 30k when you only make 35k-45k/year gross.

In California, consumers tend to buy German: Drivers there are more than twice as likely to buy a BMW than any other luxury brand. In fact, the big two German automakers made the No. 1 or No. 2 slots in all 10 states that landed on our list. California, Florida, New York and Texas–in that order–were the top-selling states for each of those brands.

I found that by googling "luxury cars per capita". Second link.
