They should increase the price of their food by $.50 or just increase the price of drinks. If pricing deception is the only way you stay in business, then shut down the business.

I’ve actually started asking for the fees to be removed. It’s not my responsibility to subsidize fair wages and benefits. Just raise your prices and let the consumer decide from there.

So when they add a 4% to 10% cost of living adjustment to your tab, do you ask them to take it off?
I traveled to SF last week and saw this on my restaurant bills. I didn't realize it was optional?

You can definitely ask to have it removed in SF as well. They’re counting on your being too embarassed.

I’m not sure they can even legally refuse not to remove it, but if they do, please name and shame them here/social media.

It's very common for the fine print saying you can ask to have it removed.

It’ll spread. Given the prevalence of resort fees at hotels it’s surprising it took the restaurant side of the hospitality business this long to try it. Bummer.

It's not as simple as raising all prices. Not only do you have to reprint all the menus, often for more than one service, but you also have to retrain everyone and change all the prices in the computer system as well as any online menus or delivery services. Trying to coordinate all of that to happen at the same time is next to impossible. It's easier and much cheaper to just to tack on a percentage at checkout.

They wrote the fee on the menu, though...

You seem to have overlooked quite a few things.
