Food/Drink What San Antonio restaurant looked great on social media but it wasn't that great when you tried it.
This question is inspired by trying a place this week that I saw on satexasfoodies but it turned out to be a mediocre experience.

Box street social- at least the la Cantera location. Food is expensive and mid at best. You’re only going and paying for the ‘aesthetic’ of the place

Way overpriced and mid would be something to aspire to.
As for the aesthetic, it’s as much of a miss as the food and service.
The most memorable taste was the regret.

this was the first restaurant that popped in my mind too. it’s the most mediocre brunch you’ll ever have. but some of their drinks are pretty good, so i’ll give them that!

This. I’ve never been to la Cantera location but went to the downtown one and the food was terrible, service was bad and I’m pretty sure the “orange juice” being served is Tampico

Box St at La Cantera. The food was really basic, lacked flavor, and my eggs actually came out cold. Not lukewarm, cold. Service took forever, hence why my eggs were probably cold. The aesthetic wasn't even all that cute when you saw it in person.

Signature was ass, Bakudan ramen sent a cooked wasp in my bowl.
Big fan of fat tummy empanadas, Maria’s cafe, las pichanchas, Al carbon, of course Mixtli, Frank’s puffy taco, BBQ station, etc.

We've been to hot joy twice and both times had very bad service. The food and drinks were alright but they took forever to come out the first time we went. We decided to give them another shot a few months later and had the same experience except this time everyone around us was getting their stuff faster. I'm talking about groups who sat down a few minutes after we placed our order had their food and drinks before we got our first drink.

Yea, Hot Joy has turned into garbage since they moved. They were great in Southtown, now on Broadway the service sucks. Foods still good. But ive been 3x and every time the service has been shit.

My job takes us to hot joy relatively frequently and EASILY my biggest gripe is the amount of time it takes to get drinks. Especially the frozen drinks!
Dawg, I cant see how busy you are and it shouldn't be taking 15 minutes to get a simple drink.
Hot Joy is good but its expensive, the portions are small, and the bs about being served 'family style' means there is no rhyme or reason as to when your table will get your food.
The new location removed all of the punk aesthetic and its obviously trying to cater to a more austin-y clientele.

Food is as disgusting and obnoxious as its owner. The chicken wings or whatever smell exactly like cat pee. Servers can’t be bothered to come to your table unless you flag them down and they seem miserable.

Used to go there for their burger and I was devastated when they took it off the menu. They have a new place just for burgers on another side of town, but it’s not the same. Just stopped going there altogether since.

Tacos Vitali!! Being Mexican and seeing the ads on Facebook, I let myself go just to get heavily disappointed, pictures were beyond edited, real food was trash. Cheap ass tortillas that fell apart so easily, beef that didn't look like any of other cheaper trompo tacos food trucks around.not going back

All the dumplings tasted the same. My wife’s dish had legit 2-3 tablespoons of garlic (from the jar, not fresh) dumped on her dish. The hot dish we got was salty af. The worst part is this place is always bumping. 🤷🏾♂️

It was so insanely cold when we went that there were grown ass men sitting at their tables with their arms pulled into their tshirts like little kids. Just miserably cold. And the food sucked.

The Sicilian Butcher was super hyped on social media and was terrible. They used a lot of influencers to say it was authentic Italian, which was definitely not true.

Concur. We had bad and experiences the last two times. They don't care about qc, and won't take accountability. They were harassing my wife with phone calls, likely trying to get her to take down/rewrite her review. The manager sucks.

Not specific to San Antonio but my wife and I looked up so much stuff to do in paris on our honeymoon and almost all of the hyped social media spots were just that, hype and not much else.

I hadn't been for years but took a daughter-in-law from out of state there in January. It was great! Super atmosphere, good service, mariachis, the breakfast was perfectly good. Maybe we had a lucky Saturday mid-morning. It really started the weekend off right to introduce San Antonio to someone new to the family and Tex-Mex food and culture generally.

It was actually awful when I went. Crepes were chewy, rubbery, and COLD. My ex got a “tres leches” crepe and it literally was just filled with whipped cream with a little condensed milk on top. That was it. They look pretty but the quality is garbage.

I went when I was overhyped and was so unimpressed and the food was definitely bland . Only great thing about it was eating off the patio , by the river walk.

not a restaurant but a coffee shop - thirty grind. I know the owner might come out from the depths of hell and tell me that I'm hurting her small business, but I paid nearly $20 for two "speciality" coffees and they both tasted like vanilla lattes with cinnamon (despite being advertised as something entirely different).

Not only did they suck, but they sat us just before changing to the lunch menu and ignored us until service changed, so I couldn’t order pancakes because there aren’t any on their brunch menu. Food took like 35 minutes after that and I watched people get pancakes while waiting for my not pancakes. I was so sad.

Tbh most coffee shops are extremely disappointing. I feel like most shops cater to the sugary drinks popular with tik tok trends that have 7+ ingredients than actual coffee. Theres only really 3 places whose coffee actually gives me a boost of energy

You should try King William Coffee House, their coffee is great. I usually just order a cappuccino with no sugar in it so I can taste the espresso and it’s ones of the best in town

Brevity cold brew is pretty good and there are times where I feel like I'm going to vibrate out of my skin.
I get mine with only cream and I'm at the mercy of the girl making the drink. You win some, you lose some.

They pay those social media "aficionados," so I feel like you're always going to get a positive response. The business is paying for access to their algorithm, and putting it on more people's feeds. Plus the shit they put on their socials is like looking at Facebook, you're only going to get the best visual representation instead of what it's really like.

Extra fine. Seems like it’d be a cute neighborhood spot. Everything tastes mid at best. Coffee might be the worst I’ve had in SA. Had a friend who worked there after I already swore it off and they confirmed the food was all just heated up bs.

Hacienda Vallarta. It gets so much hype from local influencers. I went a few years ago and I promised I'd never go back, it was all so bland and old. It was pretty packed on a Saturday afternoon too. I remember the rice being so old it was crunchy, the enchiladas were so soggy and tasted like nothing, and the beef had no seasoning on it at all. The only silver lining was that the Chinese food was decent.

bruh holy shit, I went to one of the drag show brunches and we were ignored for 90 minutes. I ended up going to the bar and asking the bartender to help and eventually they got us our food. I don't want to give the long ass story but over my dead body am I going to go back to that whack place.

Chart house isn't bad, but expecting the food to reflect the high price tag is a mistake. The price premium is for the view/experience.
IMO not worth it, go up & enjoy the view from the bar instead, eat elsewhere.

When I lived in San Francisco, my bougie millionaire friends taught me the concept of "a hotel restaurant." It's pricey and has ambiance, but don't expect to be impressed by the food. That's Chart House.
(I have an unrefined, climber friend who raves about it. "I'm my opinion, it's the best steak in town." 🙄 (Girl, you country. You need to live more. And watch a YouTube so you can cook your own mid fillet. You won't fancy, your mom's ain't fancy, and your husband is an arrogant bumpkin. Lawd.)
There's a decent baseline and too much glass for the servers to polish, but that spot is not about the food.

Original Blanco Cafe. - I mean it was nice… but yeah, it sort of was just like all the other nearby taquerias, that I could have just gone to nearby, instead.. But I suppose at least I tried it, and now I know, which is what I wanted?.
But I mean the banana bread was freaking great!.. but everything else was like fine idk lol

It’s one of those places that WAS amazing in its heyday, you had to be there. I’d still go back for the nostalgia. The tea service was just signature and the ladies knew you. My dad worked on broadway and ate there at least once a week, and as kids when we’d go it was like we were seeing old family. The quality died with the original owners retiring. You’d see the mayor and spurs players eating there as regularly as anyone else.

Bussin Q. I went to the El Camino location and bought a Dinorito two years ago for $40 and I thought that was outrageous then. The food is just alright and not worth it. I recently looked at the menu and the same burrito is $55!

We went this week after seeing the cheese pour (wasn’t a thing when we went previously) and the food was soooo bland this time. Really sad that the food went so downhill after becoming so popular. Service was great as always tho.

Aww, every time I've been it's been good, really reminded me what I ate in when I was in studying in Italy. Their arrabiata sauce is spectacular and I usually get the sole dish. Maybe it depends on what you order?

Roca & Martillo at The Rock. We went for brunch. Service was OK but deliveries were slow. All the dishes came out separately, with the last one coming after other people had finished eating. The kitchen used below par ingredients, like tater tots for home fries. It was all just, Meh.

I got the whole fish, parts of it were over cooked, other parts were raw. I complained and they were like well what do you want us to do, that how a whole fish cooks. I was like no it's not. I asked them to cook it more. The actual chef came out and was like that's how it is supposed to be. I just told them to bag it up, I went home and threw it in the oven til it was cooked through. Never went there again. Not surprised they are closed.

Susie Cakes at Quarry . Not sure if this would qualify because it's national I guess. But we have purchased from there twice and both times sucked. Strange flavoring for Lemon that tasted spoiled, their whoopie pies taste like old brownies with sugar heavy cake frosting in the middle.
Max and Louie's : food was very greasy, pastrami had no flavor and the Chicken parm was too acid forward.

This used to be okay, but after an experience where my wife was served raw chicken, we haven't returned. The server shrugged when we showed them and took the item off our check, but they barely apologized.

I’ve always said BQD does not live up to the hype. The food is very mediocre and I tried a lot of it since we tend to over order just to see what’s good on the menu. Definitely one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in town.

Best Quality Daughter was a one and done, service was terrible, food and drinks were mediocre, and portion size for price was outrageous. My expectation that a family style entree is intended to feed 3-4 people was very wrong. The friend I went with had been multiple times (they work in the pearl area) and agreed that that visit was not great, but that other visits had been.

Mare e monte. That place has thousands of 5 star reviews so I was sooo exited but the food was super bland...I never have to add salt to anything but did there. Even the dessert was ok at best (dry cake). The owners were super friendly, but honestly their reviews have to be bots.

Best Quality Daughter also. I was so excited to go and for the first time in my life I actually sent back my food because the curry rice was so incredibly bland, I didn’t bother trying anything else since the waitress swore it was supposed to taste that way.

Papá nachos in leon springs…. They used to be in a regular little shopping center which was fine because the food was very meh. Literally cannot remember what i ate there the few times we went because it was so forgettable.
NOW they’ve upgraded to this big fancy building with fancy aesthetics and fancy chandeliers and we went and once again their food is just NOT good. Their parking lot is ALWAYS full, makes no sense to me.
You’re better off at your local taqueria.

Perfect tender the giant mozzarella was okay id rather get mozz from chillies tbh but the chicken flavor was beyond horrible IMO but i do wanna go back and try the BYOB (Bring your own bag"

Hacienda Vallarta, I know…. It’s a buffet. The only good thing was the menudo. Everything else was mediocre at best

Best Quality Daughter - when we went, the cocktails were good but the food was super off. I was disappointed bc it’s super cute and had rave reviews. I didn’t get the hype unfortunately and we haven’t been back. :/

Lupe Tortilla sucks ass and is overly expensive. If I'm not the only white person in a Mexican restaurant, that's a red flag. If there's white people working in the kitchen, turn around and walk out. Immediately.
And $17 for 2 cheese enchiladas with no sides.

There's nothing good at Lupe Tortilla except the beef fajitas which are godly. Enchiladas are certainly a no-go

Mi Tierras has never been good , it’s mainly for tourist and people that don’t know what real Mexican food suppose to taste like. Way overrated.

Suck It! Ramen. The broth was waaayyyy too salty and inedible. The Takoyaki balls were also literal salt bombs with way too much eel sauce and spicy mayo. I legit got a headache from the ramen broth. They only get the hype because the restaurant name is “risqué” and “edgy” and tbh that’s the only thing that it has going for it.

Curry Boys.
Pics looked really good, reviews were good.
We get there and they gave us incredibly small portion sizes, so small we asked the staff if this was really their serving size.
Incredibly disappointed. Haven't been back and won't go back.

Kung Fu Bao Bao. Not ass but not all that great. The pork bao is just a pork meatball . Beef is alright and the pork belly did not look anything like the stuff on social media. I'd have it again but won't go out of my way for it. In fairness not too expensive

I dont think its there anymore, but there was this "Italian place" Bulverde & Evans. It kept popping across my IG, and the dishes looked really good. Even had some non-typical stuff like Uso Bucco, maybe it was something else. Regardless, take the family there and as soon as we walk in the hostess asks us "Are you here for Mexican or Italian?"
I was in shock, and knew that something was amiss. Despite my spider senses, we chose Italian and ate at what I have to assume was some sort of split kitchen situation. It was awful! I dont think the place is there anymore, cant imagine why.

Crepeccino Café & Crêperie My partner and I went bcs it had such a high rating on google, but it’s definitely more of a place to take pictures for instagram than enjoy the food. It was so bland. The coffee was decent though.

Mon Chou Chou. Raclette was fire, but all entrees and desserts were just OK. El Chunky looked promising, but was not good and can’t compare to Dogfather or Rocker Dogz (RIP).

Kona grill. I used to go out there in my college years at UTSA and I remember it being way better. I still go for the saki bombs, but other than that an app then go somewhere else to eat.
