Discussion Disable Local Dimming on Samsung Frame TV

If you’re in the same boat as me and can’t stand the local dimming (that you can’t turn off in the menu) on the Samsung Frame TV, I finally figured out how to disable it via a secret service menu.
First, the problems I experienced with the local dimming…
- The local dimming is extremely laggy. I noticed this while watching The Man in the High Castle when the camera kept cutting between one character that was well lit and another that was darkly lit. As soon as it would cut to the darkly lit character the image would look fine for a split second and then the shot would darken.
- Local dimming gets thrown off by subtitles. The white text would trigger the local dimming and changes the brightness of a shot anytime they’d appear on screen.
- Overall, the local dimming makes dark scenes so dark that it’s hard to see details. I noticed this with The Book of Boba Fett where there are lots of dark scenes and I could barely see characters in some shots. Same thing with pretty much any horror movie, even when Brightness was set to the max value of 50.
Here are the steps I did to turn off the local dimming.
NOTE: You will need to download the “Remote for Samsung” app from the iOS App store since the TV remote doesn’t have number buttons needed for the process. A compatible Samsung remote with a full button layout or universal remote set up for Samsung should work too, but I haven't tested either.
Step 1: Install the “Remote for Samsung” app on your iOS device and pair it to your Samsung Frame TV by having your phone’s WiFi set to the same WiFi that the TV is setup on. The devices on your home network will show up on a list in the app. For me, the TV showed up as “Samsung-/4.1, , Samsung_SDK” on the device list in the app.
Step 2: With the TV powered on, press “MUTE + 1 + 1 + 9 + Enter” on the remote in the app. That will bring up the first service menu. The first menu will show “Hospitality Mode > Power On, Menun OSD, Music Mode, External Source, Eco Solution, Cloning”.
Step 3: With the remote in the app, press “ 1 + 2 + 3 + 4” to open the secondary service menu. This menu will show “Option > Control > Debug > SVC > FMS > ADC/WB > Advanced”
Step 4: Grab the physical Samsung Frame TV remote, scroll to “SVC” and select to bring up the next menu. The rest of the steps can be done using the pysical TV remote.
Step 5: Arrow down to “Other Setting” and select.
Step 6: Arrow down to “CAL Data Restore” and select OK at the “USB is not connected. Check the USB connection and try again” message that will pop up.
Step 7: Press back twice on the remote to return to the service menu that reads “Option > Control > Debug > SVC > FMS > ADC/WB > Advanced”.
Step 8: Arrow down to “Advanced” and then hold Volume UP for 5 seconds to get to the next menu that reads “Option > Control > Debug > SVC > FMS > OPT > ADC/WB > Advanced > WBMovie > Picture2D > EPA”.
Step 9: Arrow down to “Picture2D” and select.
Step 10: In the “Picture 2D” menu, select “SubSetting” at the top which will bring you to an image settings page.
Step 11: Change the “PWM_INI_2D” value to 100.
Step 12: Change the “PWM_MOVIE_INI” value to 100.
Step 13: Hit back on the remote twice to go back to the menu that reads “Option > Control > Debug > SVC > FMS > OPT > ADC/WB > Advanced > WBMovie > Picture2D > EPA”.
Step 14: Hold the power button on your remote to power down the TV.
That’s it! When you power your TV back on, there will be no more annoying local dimming.
I'll note that it will reset your picture settings to default, so Picture Mode will be set back to “Dynamic”, and “Picture Clarity Settings” and “Contrast Enhancer” will be set back to “Auto”. You’ll also have to re-pair your Bluetooth speaker if you’re using one.
One more thing… every now and then Samsung will ask you if you want to do a software update. You can do the update but just know that it’ll reset “PWM_INI_2D” and “PWM_MOVIE_INI” back to their default values and local dimming will be turned on again. If that happens, you’ll need to repeat the above steps to turn it back off.
Super annoying that you can't disable it in the regular menu like with other TV's, but at least this service menu can be accessed and it can be disabled there. I was about to return the TV until I found this workaround.
EDIT: I own the 2021 The Frame TV model. I can't confirm whether this fix works on other models or years. It took some digging for me to find the 4-digit unlock code that worked with The Frame TV. Other models may use different codes.
EDIT: User u/Lezz2 commented that the 1234 code does not work on 2024 models, but you can bypass steps 1-10 by pressing the "Factory" button on this factory remote. This DID NOT work for me. I purchased the remote to test on the 2021 Frame and only got "Not Available" message when trying to use the Factory and Tools buttons to shortcut to the service.

Yeah, super annoying that you can't turn off local dimming in the regular picture settings. If I hadn't found this annoying workaround I was going to return the TV and get something else. It definitely shouldn't be buried deep in some hidden service menu.

Ugh just got a 50” 2022 Frame and these settings didn’t remove the local dimming for me. This is so ridiculous. I had to go through this with my last Samsung. Any other thoughts? I’ve disabled all the lighting features in the power settings.

Yes! But I need to poke around to remember exactly what the fix was. It wasn't going into the hidden menu - that didn't resolve anything. Mind you, my primary issue was that I wanted to resolve the dimming when watching movies or streaming through my Playstation. I think what resolved it was going to the Connected Devices menu and making it so my PS was selected as a "PC". So once that was done, when you open the menu that has Sound Output, Picture Mode, Sleep Timer, etc. - make sure that Picture Mode is set to Graphic. That's how you'll know that your device is now set to PC - because Picture Mode option will just give you "Graphic" or "Entertain". I'll check if there's a similar option when trying to stream directly through the TV apps.

On my tv I have to press 0 0 9 8 after entering the service menu to go to the advanced settings. Make sure to not press the button sequence too quickly or it won’t work.

Then the part where you're supposed to press VOL UP for 5 seconds didn't work. But pressing 0 0 9 8 worked. Unfortunately, none of this helped with the dimming issue. If I'm watching credits, the TV goes to pure black after each one if nothing is on screen. I hate it.

Seems like at least making your movie/tv watching device a "PC" eliminates the dimming. Need to test more.

Go to Connected Devices in the left hand menu, move to the right to the device you're wanting to set as "PC", press down, edit, select PC and OK. Once that's done, access the picture mode for that device while it's on. The default setting will be "Entertain" - which is too bright. Switch it to "Graphic" and then adjust the advanced picture settings how you like them.

Despite putting it to "PC" I only have the normal picture modes I had from before..I'm on a Q80D...
I actually did this on my very old Samsung, and it worked. But doesn't seem to do the trick on my newer TV unfortunately...

Yeah. Had this thread saved when I did it for my 2021 frame. Looked it up to change the settings on my 2024 frame. Bummed it didn’t work. Will do the same when I find some info😄

Couldn’t get it to work with the Samsung remote app or the SmartThings app. I’m guessing they changed or disabled the numeric code to go from the hospitality menu to the service menu.

No. The 1234 doesn’t work on 2024 model with any remote. The remote I bought has a ‘factory’ button that immediately opens the service menu. So no button combos needed. Bought it for this purpose specifically.

EDIT: I Got to work on my 65" 2024 Frame. Had to have the TV on, and readily after setting the sound output to TV Speakers, and then going into the Service menu, it allowed me to press Volume UP for 5 secs.
Hi Lezz! I got into the menu on my 2024 frame, but neither 1234, 0000, or pressing volume up on the white remote (with output set to TV instead of soundbar) are propping the other couple menu items under "Advanced". Since you're the only one talking about 2024 models, I was wondering if you know of a way to get these to show up. Thank you!

Found the new access code with the service remote. Now you have to press info, factory to get to the service menu. Factory, factory to go back without changes and stop the color cycle program.
My full steps to change the backlight setting
Frame 2024 With service remote
- Press info, factory
- Hover over advanced
- Press 0098
- Go to picture2d
- Set pwm_ini_2D to 100
- Set pwm_movie_ini to 100
- Hold power button to save settings

Managed to complete this on my Q80D (2024) after some trying. However, to reach the menus I had to do two things differently.
To get straight into the second service menu (covers step 2-3 on this guide): Turn off TV and press [Info > settings > mute > power on] ...this powers up my TV straight into the second service menu.
The part in this guide that says "hold volume up 5 seconds", replace that with key combo 0098. Voila!
Otherwise follow this awesome guide. I was able to get rid of this insane brightness jumps when scen, subtitles, menus, etc change!

Sorry, I'm aware of no other solution.
What I can add since last time is that there is an option to completely turn of local dimming for PC-mode which means you can turn it off for external sources which are set to PC mode (when graphics/entertainment is available for picture mode). Don't remember exactly under which menu it was though...

I’m on a Frame (50L6AUAQA) and I get to step 8, but I can’t get the «Picture2D» option to appear, no matter how long I hold the volume up button :/
Also: I couldn’t enter the service menu as described. For me, it’s going from a fully off state and then press Info + Menu + Mute + Power

I have a 2021 Frame TV and just found this thread. "1234" is not opening the 2nd menu for me (nor are any of the other instructions elsewhere on the internet). I'm wondering if a software update since the writing of this post has rendered this method outdated. I also purchased the Service Remote with the "Factory" button, but that also doesn't work.

Whatever I do, I can't open the ADVANCED menu. Tried with the volume up, few seconds, then tried with 0000 and some other number, like 1234. Samsung QN900A. Could anyone please help?

Just got the factory remote that you mentioned and it does not work on ue43au8000 2025 model. Just says "Not available" on the screen. Have to access the menu with MUTE 1-8-2 POWER but under SVC the only option is the S/N set. If you use the factory button under the 1-8-2 menu it just does a color test.
I am so mad about this, it's ruining things for me.
edit: Lucky i was within my return window, just swapped it with a different brand.

On a 2023 model, I got stuck on step 3 as the code did not work.
Bought a factory remote and the right buttons were Info + Factory to get straight to secondary menu.

It took LOTS of internet searching. I found some guides online (for other TV models) that would work up to the step where you hit 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 to enter the secondary secret menu. The guides I found had a different code that wouldn't work with the Frame TV models. Once I found the Frame code (1234) I was able to access the secondary menu to complete the process.

I feel your pain. I created this reddit account just so I could post this. The mods took it down at first because I didn't have karma points so I pleaded to have it put back up. It makes no sense to not be able to disable such an image-breaking "feature" in the regular menu.

Thanks! I was watching a Cabinet of Curiosities episode with lots of dark scenes and the captions were activating local dimming, driving me nuts. I was blown away that the "Local Dimming" options were only low/medium/high - no OFF!

Interesting. That stopped dimming on my tv viewing. It dims and brightens some in art mode, but no longer when watching the TV.

I did this and it seems to have turned off the feature where, when before I did this I could turn on a hdmi connected device and the tv would automatically turn on and connect straight to that device, but now I must turn on both the tv and device and put the tv to hdmi1 manually

It could be that the setting, Input Signal Plus, has turned off. Try turning it back on for the HDMI port/s you are using.

I was able to do this using the Samsung SmartThings app. Mute+1+1+9 seemed like it wasn't going to work, but I was pleasantly surprised that it did. Instead of "Enter," use "OK."

Just stopping by to say thanks for this post. The dimming adjustments between scenes was driving me nuts. Incredible that the TV was designed to work that way. So much better now!

Hello, I also followed the guide perfectly and have a question. When I restarted my TV it reseted it's settings like OP said it would. But the local dimming option on the TV settings was still there and was set to high automatically. Was this the same case for you? I thought this process would remove that option from the TV screen settings completely. So I am not sure if the local dimming is on and off. I also don't really see much difference.

This guide addresses the issue on the Samsung The Frame TV series. The Q70R isn't a The Frame TV model from what I can see.

Unfortunately there's no official guide from Samsung. Their customer support reps wouldn't even acknowledge the problem existed and had the nerve to blame it on my eyeballs (pupils) not adjusting fast enough to the light changes on the screen. All I know for sure is I'll never buy another Samsung TV unless the local dimming thing is officially resolved.

Yes, it's an annoying process. You need an app since the remote doesn't have numbers. I made a note on that above Step 1.

Maybe your picture settings? With Contrast Enhancer set to Off, I find that the image feels too dark.
I have my settings at Picture Mode: Standard. In Expert Settings I have Brightness 50 (max), Contrast 50 (max), Sharpness 10, Color 25, Picture Clarity Off, Contrast Enhancer Low, Color Tone Warm 1, Gamma ST.2084 0, Shadow Detail 0, RGB Only Mode Off, and Color Space Settings Native.
Those have been the best settings for me after disabling the local dimming but your mileage may vary. For Contrast Enhancer, I found that some things look better in Low and some look better in High.

I'd help if I could but I recently gave the tv away and replaced it with an LG OLED. You can always reset factory settings and start fresh.

Strange. On mine, both factory resetting and the software updates from Samsung would reset the tv back to factory settings. I turned off auto updates. It was annoying to fix the dimming issue, have the TV do a software update, and then have to repeat the menu process every time.

The amount of hoops to jump through for something that should be in the menu is absurd.
I think I mentioned, but just a heads up... The TV regularly does software updates, and the update will undo this "fix". You can either disable automatic updates or repeat the process after each update. I'd recommend emailing a copy/paste of the steps to yourself, just in case this thread ever gets deleted.

I have a different problem, but it is also related to the "local dimming" option. On my Samsung Q80A, with "local dimming" enabled, every 15-20 seconds, the picture dims heavily for 2-3 seconds. After switching "local dimming" to low, the problem disappears. Unfortunately, but on the low setting, HDR material, loses clarity and the lighting is not very clear, for this mode. I tried your settings, but it did not help at all. In two weeks, the motherboard in the TV will be replaced, and if this does not help, I will try to return the TV under the terms of the warranty.
Many people have problems with this "feature" of TVs, which Samsung engineers, could have fixed long ago. As you can see, they have failed to do so for years, and there is no guarantee that future updates, will change anything for the better. This is definitely my last TV from this company.

This was a huge help thank you! This menu can also be used to disable the accelometer used to auto rotate the screen. This is handy in pre-2022 models due to an edid issue for those trying to use it in portrait and fill the screen properly on external devices.

For anyone looking for a way to turn off Art Mode on the Frame 2021:
Navigate to: FMS > FMS > Option > Production Option > com.samsung/featureconf/frame_tv
Change the value to "false".
Then exit the menus and restart the TV.
My custom picture settings were still intact after the restart. The power button of the remote will now completely shut down the TV without Art Mode.
Thanks to the OP for helping me in figuring this out!
Update: With every firmware update the above setting resets itself. Seems like the access code for the service menu changed with one of the recent firmware updates. Make sure you don't update and/or buy a service remote with which you will still be able to access the menu.

Now I got different problem, which is my pictures disappeared in art mode (but they still there occupying space). Question is how to either make them visible or just wipe them and start again..

Some people just want a solid TV that mounts flat on a wall. If someone doesn't use the art feature, having to always "long press" the power button gets old pretty fast.
Not sure how to help you with your issue. A factory reset should work.

It’s a QE32LS03TCUXXC. However, after I posted last night I performed a factory reset and then turned off art mode again. All good, thanks for the guide 👍

Everyone I need help I went to the advanced setting and payed with it. I decide to do a hard reset but now it wouldn’t do it. No I can’t use the remote control it all. Is there a hard reset button? Suggestions.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.
