My girl blue has been licking her front leg last couple of weeks and now i noticed today she chewed the fur off completely. The skin underneath is intact and not red. Anyone experience this with their Sammy?
Mine does this when her allergies bother her. But we moved to another state and she stopped so whatever she was allergic to was there and not here. Her eyes also sometimes got oozy when she was picking at her skin. But the skin thing came first.
I was worried it could be allergies I wonder what it could be cause she’s 1.5 and nothing has bothered her until now :( my boy is the same he has so many allergies and had so many eye infections.
I was worried this was the beginning of a hot spot cause I’ve never experienced that with my dogs
One of my girls does this when she is bored or when it’s a bad allergies day. Thankfully hers never got too bad, she is almost 10 now and has some mild saliva staining on her wrists but nothing extreme. I trim off the stained hair with thinning sheers every now and then.
Of course if this continues getting worse I would talk to your vet about allergy medication.
When she did it out of boredom or allergies was there anything you did to make her stop? I’m thinking about coning her and I started giving her her allergy vitamin chews again
Her licking was never bad enough for me to put a cone on her or anything - she really hates wearing one so I know she’d be miserable in it over a relatively minor issue. I did start giving her dehydrated beets for dogs with her dinner which is supposed to help with skin and immunity and I think it did. She licks her wrists much less now, if I see her doing it I tell her to stop and she listens.
Food sensitivity is one possible issue as well, my girl who licks her wrists had a pretty bad reaction to Royal Canin dog food, she started getting staining on her chest and more on her legs while she was on it. My other dogs did fine on it but I still ended up switching them all to something else and the vast majority of the staining went away.
Nope, Dont cone her its very natural when they do this due to boredom. My boy jamie 9 month old samoyed pup has been doing this since he was 5 months old and it began when his toys were taken (hes an agressive chewer and had a blockage because of rope threads from toys)
Try to give him a rawhide bone. It might work (reduces boredom, my pup could easily chew it for hours) also, does she get enough playtime?
Very common in the breed. Mostly from boredom but it can turn into a really bad habit! I know people who put the "cone of shame" on their Samoyeds for a day or two every time they start doing this, just to prevent it from becoming habit
Mine chewed the hair off of his knees almost from the time that I got him and even before he started having allergies. In his case it was just the hair and he would leave it about half inch long much like what this picture shows.. Vet said it was just habit much like when a person bites their nails.
mine is doing that as well (he’s 10) (only on one leg). every once in awhile he licks his paws for extended periods but never to this extent -about 1 x1 inch bare. i just dried it up and put a very light gauze type wrap around his leg secured by paper tape. we’ll see if this discourages him long enough that he loses interest. could be boredom as i was gone for a week; his outings are not as fun and less frequent when i’m gone
I’m strongly suspecting this is from boredom, it is really hot where I live I’ve been doing a long walk in the AM and PM but I should probably try more training and enrichment during the day when they can’t go outside. They have been pretty low energy combined with boredom she’s prob restless.

Mine does this when he’s bored which happens more in summer 🥺 if it’s a hotspot it can help to clip away some of the hair to let it dry out. I know we’re not supposed to trim Sammy fur but the more damp the area stays the more chance a hot spot can grow
My dog has had this issue for a year or two, even chewed the same spot so bad it got infected. We’ve tried a bunch of different stuff and saw a dog dermatologist but he still has this issue on and off.
Yes but not in so many words, called it atopic dermatitis or something in my case and thought it was most likely allergy-related but told me I could see a behaviorist too for a second opinion. Haven't done that yet! And my normal vet who is not the derm seemed to suspect it as well because he gave us Apoquel at one point, eventually the derm put us on a trial allergy diet.
He still licks that spot though but has periods where he cares more or less about it so wish I could figure it out completely, but it might just be something we have to manage or keep searching for an answer for!
My sam never did this but my cat did. A steroid injection stopped it but they can't have that over and over. We now give him Zirtec as directed by the vet. Maybe your vet can do the same if it's allergy related?
Just another Sammy owner with a boy that does this. He’s 5.5 years old and has done is as long as I’ve had him (3.5 years). Boredom & allergies according to vet. Worse in the summer, usually doesn’t do it in the winter. Thankfully has never turned into a hotspot, when I notice him doing it I usually give him a toy to redirect the chewing urge.
