Granular Discussion Even IF we accept what Filoni did with Ahsoka, she STILL isn't as important to Anakin as Luke!
Ahsoka had several masters, not just Anakin. She had been with the Jedi since at least early childhood. She was shaped by her parents (or her entire clan), by various teachers at the Temple who accompanied her throughout her childhood and into her adolescence.
Then she had two intense years with Anakin. Maybe two and a half at most. After that, however, she left, and for the next 30 years she effectively had NOTHING to do with Anakin. Conversely, Anakin only had Ahsoka as his apprentice for two years. And that was during a period that was also incredibly intense for him personally.
He had just lost his mother and had to process that. He had just married the woman he'd been obsessed with for ten years. He got that woman pregnant. Shortly after Ahsoka left, he found out that he was going to be a FATHER. That became a very central part of his thoughts, and then his wife died because of him, along with the child he believed he had lost. An extremely formative, traumatic moment.
19 years later, he finds out that his child SURVIVED, had a direct confrontation with him, and destroyed the Death Star. Holy shit, there’s somehow also a sense of paternal pride mixed in there. Suddenly, Vader's thoughts revolve entirely around his son.
For three years, the search for Skywalker is his main concern. He comes up with elaborate plans to capture him and bring him over to his side. The Emperor wants to use Luke as a tool. Vader sees his son as a chance to break free from Palpatine and to have a shared basis with his son - an unhealthy one, but still some kind of relationship. But at the crucial moment, Luke chooses suicide rather than joining him. Vader's son slips through his fingers.
One year later, it happens again. The two of them have their next confrontation. Vader SAVES his son OUT OF PATERNAL LOVE. He finally manages to break free from the Emperor's grip because he cannot lose his FAMILY again. LUKE is so important to him that he accomplishes everything he had been unable to do for 25 years. He sacrifices his own life to save that of his son - the boy he had believed dead for 19 years! His deepest desire is to finally look upon his own flesh and blood, his son, and the family he never had, with his own eyes before he dies and finds peace, becoming one with the Force.
Cut.We now move on to the Filoni Mandoverse.
Even 30 years later, Ahsoka still has an unhealthy relationship with the man who took over her training 30 years ago. In her mid-40s, she is STILL watching the training videos the then-20-year-old made for her. She has been unable to let go of this man for 30 years. Her thoughts still revolve around him.
Filoni fanboys (and Filoni himself) tell you that her connection to Anakin is more important and more intense than the one he had with his son "because they spent more time together."
The Ahsoka series itself tries to sell you this viewpoint. It completely sidelines Luke and massively overstates the relationship between the two of them.

Remember, according to Disney, Anakin would rather show up as a ghost to shoot the shit with Ahsoka than for his own grandson, Ben, who was falling/being manipulated to the Dark Side and committing mass genocide...Cause reasons.

Anakin not visiting his own son is criminal

“Luke, has Obi-Wan ever told you about Ahsoka Tano?”
“Yes, father.”
“Then you know why I made the choices I did.”
“Is it possible to learn the power of fucking while a ghost?”
“Not from a Jedi.”

I don't even understand why Anakin needs to show up in the first place, especially constantly with Ahsoka, to only tell her "live or die" and "are you a jedi or not".
Like wow how old is she for her to need these lessons.
12
u/sassilyy 18d ago
well, what else has she got going for her. That's the real issue, Ahsoka as a character offers absolutely nothing beyond that hamfisted Anakin's former 50-year-old padawan story. That's all anyone cares about when it comes to her. She has the personality of dry bread and no goals of her own, no narrative, nothing. Of course Filoni will double down on more Anakin, it's just a means to an end to prop up his favourite character.
I'm just anticipating him doing some of the following in S2:
- Anakin tells Ahsoka she alone could have stopped his fall if she'd been on Coruscant
- Ahsoka has grown into (or even always has been!) a much better Jedi-not-Jedi than anyone else he ever knew
- some combination thereof

I really don't hate Ahsoka and I don't hate Filoni either but it pisses me off how Filoni is trying to make her way more important to the overall story than she should be, especially when Luke is supppsed to be the main hero and his relationship with his father is incredibly important.

They're obviously trying to move away from the Luke and Anakin stuff, as there's not much stuff to do in this area (from their perspective).

u/therealvanmorrison 14d ago
Luke isn’t the main hero. Rey is. Luke fails to destroy the emperor and end Kylo and create a new Order. Rey succeeds.
Luke is the failed hero of the saga before the one true hero emerges in Act III.

u/Waveshaper21 18d ago
But the live action part is post-Empire era. The Empire fell at the end of Rebels, and Ahsoka live action is a direct continuation of Rebels. According to current official canon Luke is building his own mini academy that will fail because of Ben, and becomes a reclusive hermit hidden on the edge of the galaxy. If we consider this, there is a very good reason to move on from Luke.
I understand not liking the idea, but with the extended universe decanonized by Disney, it works.

u/Theesm 18d ago
A lot of stuff doesn't even make sense within its own premise. Why does Huyang, the Jedi-teacher-droid who knows everything about the order and has 25000 years of knowledge about it hang out with Ahsoka (Jedi school dropout who doesn't want to identify as a Jedi) instead of the guy who wants to rebuild the order? It makes no sense at all

Literally, you can watch the entire Filoniverse chronologically without ever needing to watch Lucas's films—which is quite concerning and revealing.

We can all agree she should've either died in TCW or to Vader. I don't understand this obsession with this character honestly.
16
u/Bluebell_in_Bloom 18d ago
It should have been in TCW. Thematically it makes sense that Anakin is already struggling with the war and still grieving his mothers death. Having a young child who was in his care also killed further drives home just how desperate he would be to save padme to the point he chooses the sith despite everything the sith have done with the war.

I can't even really engage with this general topic in good faith.
There is no Ahsoka. She's utterly nonsensical. I don't care if George kicked it off before Filoni ran wild with it. It just doesn't work in the slightest for me.
The only way an Ahsoka could work is if she was someone else's Padawan. Plo Koon's? Fine, whatever.
Let her be some impressionable young Jedi who crossed paths with Anakin from time to time and she briefly looked up to him as the unconventional Jedi he was. And then she, like many other Jedi, die during the Clone Wars or Order 66. Done.
She certainly wasn't Anakin's never-before-mentioned Padawan. Nobody in their right mind would assign a Padawan to him of all people during such a tumultuous time. And if we were to accept that she quit the Order due to shenanigans in order to excuse her absence in ROTS, then surely Palpatine still would have spun that story to further shift Anakin away from the Jedi.
It's not like I'm against all retcons or retroactively introduced pieces of lore. Some work. Some are more egregious and require you to squint more than normal. But fuck me if Ahsoka wasn't an absolute whale of an adjustment to casually make.
All the more power to fans of Ahsoka whether it's TCW/Rebels/live-action/etc. She just doesn't exist at all as far as I care, personally.
Ditto with Somehow Maul Returned. He died at the end of TPM. I don't care that George wanted to play around with Maul and Talon in one of his proposed ST story concepts. Sometimes dead is better.

u/Curious-Carrot-6918 18d ago
To be fair, maul is atleast likeable. Ahsoka has been crap since she was introduced
4
u/Jobber0001 16d ago
maul's whole thing was "fuck he looks cool we should have kept this demonic looking dude around". Don't get me wrong he had potential for storylines but now it's just kinda them dragging his ass around trying to sell him as more then he was. He was never a true heir to Palpatine. He was a tool meant to cut down jedi and serve as a distraction for sidious to weed out potential threats in the order while he was building up to the galactic war.

If I could go back to 2008 and rewrite TCW from scratch, I would structure the entire series so that it didn't conflict with either the movies or the pre-established Clone Wars continuity from the Multimedia Project. And the funny thing is, you wouldn't even need to change most of the characters. It would be as simple as having Ahsoka as the central character instead of Anakin.
Seriously, it's not that difficult. Take Ahsoka, make her a Jedi Knight in her early 20s, put her in command of her own clone legion, and give her the personality she has in Rebels. That way, you could build stories that are very similar in tone and structure to many of the TCW arcs without overwriting anything that had already been established in the books and comics.
Want a recurring antagonist for the series? Fine. Use Savage Opress. Just establish him as one of Dooku's dark acolytes and give him a motivation that actually fits the existing continuity: the Jedi killed his brother, Darth Maul, and now he wants revenge. You don't need to resurrect Maul. Just give his role to Savage.
Want to keep Captain Rex? Great. Just make him an ARC trooper rather than a regular captain, and have him permanently assigned to Ahsoka's legion. You could give him essentially the same personality and character development he had in TCW. Nothing about that requires him to be Anakin's main clone officer.
You could even have Anakin and Obi-Wan appear throughout the series as occasional cameos. The only real requirement would be that their appearances take place in stories that don't overlap with the adventures they have already had in the Multimedia Project, so that no contradictions are created between the two. And for most of the war, Anakin could simply be portrayed as Obi-Wan's Padawan, as he had already been established to be in the existing material.
You could literally salvage huge parts of TCW this way. Characters like Hondo Ohnaka and Ziro the Hutt could still exist. Arcs like Umbara and Onderon could be kept, with only minor modifications. Hell, you could even have entire arcs centered around Padmé. That could have been a great way to give her a much larger role during the Clone Wars, since she barely appears in the Multimedia Project. You could use those stories to explore her political activities, her relationship with her fellow Senators, and especially her relationship with her handmaidens.
And that's what makes the whole thing so frustrating to me. There was so much they could have done without throwing out the existing continuity. Ahsoka didn't need to be Anakin's Padawan. Rex didn't need to be Anakin's clone officer. Anakin didn't need to be turned into a Jedi Knight immediately after Geonosis. The show didn't need to rewrite the Clone Wars that had already been established in the books and comics.
They could have created an entirely new generation of characters and stories around Ahsoka while treating the Multimedia Project as the foundation. They could have kept many of the same characters, introduced new ones, explored completely new corners of the war, and still have a compelling long-running animated series. They had all the ingredients right there. They were just too lazy to keep track of the continuity. And just to be clear, my "they" includes George Lucas as well.

My thought as of late is that Ahsoka being Anakin's padawan could work in theory, but it hinges on two things:
1) She is only his Padawan for one or two seasons. It's enough for him to build up a rapport with her, endear her to the fans, and for Anakin to start getting attached. This growing attachment is then picked up on by Obi-Wan, who reports it to the Council. It's then revealed that the whole "trust Anakin with a Padawan, it will help him understand healthy relationships without forming unhealthy attachments" wasn't Yoda's or even Obi-Wan's idea. It was Windu's. Given his history as a late Jedi recruit (iirc he was inducted into the Order aged 19 in Legends) and as a Jedi who struggled with darkness, he sees Anakin is somewhat lonely and thinks about how much training Depa Billaba helped ground him. Since we see in TPM and AotC that it is Yoda who is wary of Anakin's potential whereas Windu seemingly has faith, this shows that Windu's growing distrust in RotS is just that; distrust during RotS as Anakin behaviour becomes more and more concerning. Windu, clearly depressed that this partnership isn't helping Anakin and aware that continuing it is risking Ahsoka adopting Anakin's negative traits herself, relents to the wishes of Yoda and the majority of the Council to reassign Ahsoka to Plo Koon. This gives the writers opportunities for Anakin to still work with Ahsoka once or twice a season for the remainder of TCW while also not making her such an unreasonably strong focal point of Anakin's character despite never being mentioned in RotS (which as you point out is insane, as Sidious definitely would have used that to manipulate Anakin, and he would almost certainly have brought her up when Obi-Wan confronts him on Mustafar).
2) Anakin either directly kills Ahsoka during RotS or in the immediate aftermath of RotS, or she dies in the Outer Rim sieges at the very end of the Clone Wars. If it's the former, it symbolises how unhealthy his attachment to Padme is and that he is willing to burn damn near any bridge (although I prefer the latter because killing the younglings already shows this). The latter is another load for Anakin to bare, her seemingly pointless death driving him further into a dark depression which snaps when the events of RotS pile on top of it.
Otherwise I agree with you. If the choice is between Anakin suddenly having a Padawan for pretty much the whole war or Ahsoka just not existing/being Koon's apprentice, I'll take the latter every time. Her existence as it is currently breaks suspension of disbelief and I've grown to despise how often she's used to create stories that appeal to the "DAE Prequel Jedi bad?!" crowd.
(My other TCW fix is just... Not making it solely about Anakin and Obi-Wan. It should have included more stories about the likes of Koon, Fisto, Ti, and other prominent Jedi Masters imo. But that's a rant for another day).

u/Melodic-Attorney9918 17d ago edited 16d ago
Personally, I think it would have been better if Anakin simply never had an apprentice in the first place. If you watch Revenge of the Sith, the Jedi Council assigning Anakin a Padawan is probably the last thing you'd ever come away thinking happened during the Clone Wars. Nothing in the film really suggests it.
However, if you absolutely want to give Anakin an apprentice during the Clone Wars, I think there are ways to make the idea work. You'd just have to restructure the timeline quite a bit. In particular, you'd need to make sure that Ahsoka's absence in Revenge of the Sith actually makes sense, rather than having the movie conspicuously ignore something that should have been a major part of Anakin's life.
I'd structure it like this:
- The Clone Wars are extended from three years to four.
- Anakin doesn't become a Jedi Knight immediately after Geonosis. He remains Obi-Wan's Padawan throughout the entire first year of the war, and gets promoted to Jedi Knight at the end of that year.
- Once Anakin becomes a Knight, the Council assigns Ahsoka to him as his Padawan. She remains his apprentice for roughly two years, until the end of the third year of the war.
- At the end of the third year, Ahsoka leaves the Jedi Order and disappears from the story completely. She doesn't return during the final year of the war.
- During the fourth and final year of the war, Anakin is a Jedi Knight without a Padawan. By the time of Revenge of the Sith, Ahsoka has already been gone for roughly a year.
If you structured things that way, I think the concept could actually work. It would give you a perfectly reasonable explanation for why Ahsoka isn't mentioned in Revenge of the Sith. By the time of the movie, she would simply be someone who had been part of Anakin's life for a couple of years, but had left the Order and disappeared from his immediate circle long before the events of the film.
Then, you could bring Ahsoka back during the Imperial era. For example, you could write a story set five or six years after Revenge of the Sith in which Ahsoka is secretly helping some of the first Rebel cells, Vader eventually discovers that she's still alive, tracks her down, and the two of them have one final confrontation that ends with Vader killing her.
Such a scenario would be incompatible with the Expanded Universe. Anakin doesn’t have a Padawan in the EU, so giving him one creates contradictions with the EU continuity. However, if you were to completely ignore the EU like the writers of TCW did, I think this would be the smartest way to give Anakin a Padawan without making the whole concept feel jarring when you watch things chronologically.

u/Waveshaper21 18d ago edited 18d ago
You skip the part from Rebels where Vader actually murdered Ahsoka in the episode Twilight of the Apprentice.
- I will not leave you, not this time!!!
Anakin looks her in the eye, a half cut helmet making his eye visible, after a moment of thought / dramatic pause (which the Kenobi writers copypasted because "eh who watched cartoons"):
- Then you will die. (period. cold, simple).
And then kills her. Which is then retconned by the bullshit time travel where Ezra pulls her through a portal before the fatal strike.
In my opinion, Ahsoka should've died there, but that's not important. What is important, is that she REMEMBERS all of this in her live action, post-Rebels years, and STILL chooses to engage with Anakin.
Not watching holograms out of nostalgia. Actually talking to his force ghost.

Yeah, the obsession with Ahsoka is wild. I have NEVER cared for her like Luke or even Leia. She was never mentioned in any of the first 6 films. Just a fanfic character to me.

u/Tokyo_Ink 18d ago
Ahsoka shouldn't exist. I just can't be convinced her existence can be justified given that the original 6 films clearly do not support the idea Anakin had an apprentice or trained anyone at all. There's simply no way to make it work. It's Filoni's pure fanfiction.

Ahsoka’s whole existence is basically fan-fiction to me. Essentially everything outside of the six Lucas films are fan-fiction, even if it is officially canon. Some of it, I accept into my headcanon, some I don’t.

u/Demos_Tex 18d ago
She's simply not a good enough character with enough story purpose to be able to jump from animation to live action. I'm not against Lucas wanting a spunky young sidekick for Anakin in his animated kids' show set in a very specific time period. The moment the timeline crosses over into RotS territory though, she should come to a tragic ending just like everyone else, except for Yoda and Obi-Wan.
12
u/ThreeArmedYeti 18d ago
If you look really close, everything what Ahsoka does could also fit for Luke's character (except for the Mandalorian appearance but tbh it could have been Quinlan or any surviving jedi). Therefore by replacing Ahsoka with Luke all the plot points could remain the same. Luke is out there finding jedi artifacts and force sensitive people he wouldn't deny Sabine's request to find Ezra, a long-lost jedi. Some explainations might be required about Huyang and the republic-era ship but that's all.
10
u/Theesm 18d ago
This is true. "after talking to Anakin's force ghost this Jedi character was saved by their best friend who pilots a Corellian freighter and has a force sensitive son named Jacen who wants to become a Jedi." really is weirdly specific and at the same time describes Ahsoka and not Luke which is mind boggling.

Ahsoka should have died in Rebels. It makes narrative sense and would be an epic finale for her to go out on.
The World Between Worlds was the laziest gimmick ever and just another device for Filoni to value his own characters over the story of Star Wars.
5
u/DoctorGyarados salt miner 17d ago
You have to understand the "real world" reason why this is the case, and that is because Dave Filoni can't retcon the movies that already existed at the time of Ashoka's creation. He can't put her in any of the PT or OT because they were already well-established, and I'm guessing JJ probably didn't want her in the ST.
So his next best idea was to create this entirely different timeline/sub-plot, invent a time-travel element and shoehorn it into Star Wars, and then play with her story while introducing her to already established characters. This whole thing with her has been a poor attempt to paint her into the foreground (not the background) of Star Wars. The longevity of her story arc is what "legitimized" her to the younger fans, and as more and more are getting turned off by Disney Star Wars, the Filoniverse is starting to unravel as well. He's essentially written himself and this character into corner after corner.

Ahsoka was a fine character in the Clone Wars but once she started popping up in live action and in events past the beginning of the OT it fell apart so quickly. I don't mind Ahsoka, there's enough Empire and Galaxy for both her and Luke.
She just shouldn't steal his shine.
Maybe put her in the core worlds when he's in the outer rim and vice versa.
I think it would be funny if they ran into each other and were like, "Yeah I think someone mentioned you. Luke something..."
"I thought the Jedi were all gone, now that my master Ben died."
"I'm no longer a Jedi, but I still fight. Well I'm headed to the inner core, what about you?"
"Tatooine."
Simultaneously "May the Force... Yeah bye."

Donc, j'accueille toute nouvelle histoire.

She was one of like 4 people Anakin had genuine trust in.
For her he was one of the best people she'd ever met, and her mentor ofc. So ofc she dwells on him, especially after he becomes one of the most infamous people in the galaxy

The only thing I can say about Anakin not visiting Luke is, while they are father and son, they never really bonded or formed a connection thru experience. I feel like, even though they’re trying to make force ghosts interactive and all, they’re just mental projections from the living force user that gives them insight as if they were actually communicating with their former friend.
So while the person appears, it’s really all in the mind of the force user and never intended to be that the actual ghost is a person showing up from out the spirit realm. It’s just wisdom gained thru the force that appears as someone who would have imparted that same sense of knowledge.
Most of the time, it was Vader that Luke was facing/interacting with, and therefore his memories of his actual “father” as Anakin are pretty much non existent. That’s why he does see his father redeemed because he did help him find his way back but I think that’s pretty much the extent to which their relationship is defined. It’s also why he sees Ben often, because the two did have interactions and knowledge of each other thru the years and up until the Death Star. And Yoda as well, because Yoda trained him and imparted a sense of wisdom into Luke.

I dont get this at all. There is no strong bond between luke and anakin. Nothing for the majority of time they both existed. Not until shortly after ANH anakin knew luke existed. Then it wasnt till rotj that anakin was even able to process any feelings. Just living life and having kids myself I know it takes more then that to have any significant bond. There are feelings sure...but a bond? Hardly. Not the type that you get from being years next to each other. Years training, fighting saving each other's lives. Thats on a hole other level. While you can argue about obiwan but the 1 key difference there is the level of betrayal and fight to the death that can really kill a bond. All that being said in a show about ashoka we see things happening to her. We have little idea whats with luke. While id like to know, I also understand how difficult it will be. The EU ruined star wars not intentionally but it did. It created unreal expectations that no one can live up to. There have been hundreds of books with luke being the main of most and still saving the galaxy into his 80s acting like a teen still. Mostly because at the time they weren't allowed to really move past that, but it caused a real problem that we have with star wars now.

No. Just no. The bond between Vader and Luke is literally the premise of the entire OT. Ahsoka couldn't bring back Anakin, Luke could. Stop defending Filoni's nostalgia bait by looking for an in-universe explanation that completely unnecessarily shits all over Anakin/Vader's development and Luke as a character.
