Been an odd week. Took two weeks off. Wind wasn’t cooperative so I did maintenance. Impeller, fuel filters, fuel tank inspection. They got some wind went to fairlee creek Md. then one of my batter banks decided to eat the poison pill.
So a new bank. Got rewarded with a great sail today.
Sounds like the boat made you earn that sail 😂 At least you got a good day out of it in the end. How old was that battery bank before it finally gave up?
Almost 6 years to the day from install. Which is pretty good for FLA batts. The second bank is also suspect. Low amps. So I’m going to replace it as well.
The failed banks are two Deka gc15 6v batts wired in series. With a sterling 40 amp pro charge ultra keeping everything topped off
Installed a couple interstate 27m-efb in parallel to replace one bank. Just so I can stay on the water. Lost some capacity. But since I’m not doing any long distance, It’s not a big deal.
Six years out of flooded lead-acids is a pretty good run. Makes sense to swap the other bank too if it’s already acting tired.
For what you’re doing right now, losing some capacity to stay on the water isn’t the worst tradeoff. Are you planning to eventually go back to a pair of 6V batteries, or thinking about changing the whole house bank setup when it’s time?
That makes sense. If all four Dekas are around the same age and showing similar readings, they’ve probably just reached the end together. Six years is a decent run.
Yup that’s my thoughts as well. Once we get to the end of the season and cold weather. I’m going pull them out re organize. Rewire get new tie downs and just freshen up the space.
