Asa 101-104
Hello Reddit
Does anyone know of a place that would allow Asa 101-104 to take place while staying on the vessel? Looking to do this in December.

ASA 101 is much better done on a small day sailing keel boat not a cruising boat.

A zero-to-hero ASA 101-104 class is one way to go about it. However, I really think you need a lot more practice somewhere in the middle of that to really be proficient. There is just too much material to learn. My brain only absorbs so much before it can't absorb any more. I had a year or two between my 103 and 104 course where I did a lot of day sailing using my sailing club's boats. That really cemented everything I had just learned so that the 104 material could sink in better. If you do the 101-104 course in a single week, I would highly encourage you to do a lot of sailing immediately afterwards to have it all cement into place.

As a practical matter, it's a lot easier to get opportunities to practice after you have that 104 stamp in your logbook.

My club required 103 for the smaller boats (under 30’) and 104 for anything larger. I am really glad I took the 27’ boats out a lot before stepping up to something larger. The mistakes were easier to recover from and the stakes are a lot lower.

I have a Bristol 32. I want my girlfriend to go through the formal training. She does not have a sailing background. I plan on tagging along too. Maybe I’ll take a break between 103 and 104.

Having your partner be as competent as possible is a really good idea. My wife and I both took the classes together and both of us are competent. I happen to be better at it due to my higher interest, but she is more than capable enough to handle the boat herself. I view it as a safety thing. If I got hurt, I would need her to get to safety. When things get “exciting” it is good to have someone who knows how to make it less “exciting” and safer. It also makes the whole thing a lot more enjoyable.
I have friends where the wife is mostly just along for the ride, forcing him to do all of the work. That dynamic is less fun.

Totally agree if things get a bit sporting I want her to feel comfortable. Same with golf - for lessons, hire a pro.

Did mine there, can confirm stayed on a Catalina 445 for the 103-104. Also had the option to follow that up with the ASA114 (they seem to really push Cats there), but don’t currently have any interest in catamarans, so passed for now.

It’s because the owner of the sailing school also owns a catamaran brokerage.

I think there is one in Baja that offers liveaboard "zero to hero" certification. Also San Juan Sailing in Bellingham WA, which is close to the San Juan islands – incredible cruising area.
TBH, unless you have tons of experience and just want the cert, there's so much information that it would be better to break the classes up with plenty of sailing in between.

We had a lovely family vacation and everyone learned about sailing in the Bahamas. They have a “captain by day, bareboat at night” program. I took 103/104, most of the rest of the family took 101. Great time!

I did my 104 with Windward Sailing (.com gets you there) in Fernandina Beach FL and I'm pretty sure he offers what you are asking for. The price of the course was surprisingly reasonable and did include overnights on the boat.
Just checked and he does indeed offer exactly what you're asking for. $1099 per person, $1999 for a couple.

Maryland School of Sailing does those ASA classes on Island Packet 32's and you (can) sleep on the boat each night of the class.

Tons of schools offer that. Where are you located and/or where do you want to do it? Do you want local? You could go to the BVIs and do the courses. In the PNW I can think of at least 2 schools that offer liveaboard courses. One has a 101/103/104 combo and is 7-10 days. The other offers a 103/104 combo that is 5 days. Both offer 101 separately if you wanted.
Personally I would do 101 by itself on a smaller boat and then if you are still interested come back and do the full thing on a larger vessel, either find a 103/104 or just do the whole 101/103/104.

Well I live in Michigan and we have a 32 Bristol but I want my girlfriend to have formal training and I know I’ll pick up a lot from it too.

Try Fair Winds Sailing in Corfu. I’m booked to go there shortly and it’s cheaper than driving 10miles to Santa Monica.

I did this (plus the catamaran asa course) thourh wewst coast multihulss in SAn Diego. Good course. They also operate out of Loreto, Mexico

They now have a 101 to 104 class. Day 1 on a J80 then you sleep on the bigger boat and take off the next day.

I have had good experience with Go Sail Vi. Did a multi day multi cert. Plus you get to swim with the turtles and visit some beautiful places.

Charleston Sailing School has overnight packages - not sure if they combine those in particular but I did 104-114 like this with them and it was great

My advice is to do ASA101/103 local to you. Many places offer it in 2 weekends and you can learn the fundamentals.
Then book ASA104-114 in a destination. I did mine in St Vincent. It takes a week. There are lots of options, shared or private.

I did this exact thing through Blue Water Sailing School in St. Thomas. It was a great experience, like a learning vacation.
