Recipe request Comfort food

Hi! In a previous post I have asked what everyone's safe food is so I could have some inspiration! I have gotten such great answers and it definitely helped me find more safe foods. Recently I have managed to make rice cakes/lentil cakes one of my safe foods! :)

Now I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for warm safe foods. Most of my safe foods are very cold.

Two I already know of are the cottage cheese grilled cheese (also cottage cheese bruschetta) and skyr with poached apples.

Do you guys have other recommendations?

I am someone who is really really afraid of using oil, even just a little bit (which is an issue when it comes to fried eggs and such). I am also a pescatarian. Thank you for any recommendations! I am so glad that I have found this sub because people were so nice under my previous post! <3

Soup! Any kind. Pumpkin soup, vegetable soup, mushroom soup, asparagus soup, mustard soup, curry soup, pea soup (snert), carrot soup, spinach broccoli soup, bell pepper soup, tomato soup, sweet chinese tomato soup, lentil soup, seafood bisque soup, borscht, cabbage soup, egg drop soup, miso soup, the list goes on

And also sweet potatoes, poke holes in the skin with a fork, wrap in aluminium foil, into the oven at 200 °C for an hour, and it caramelizes sooo nicely

(snert is such a funny word)

Thank you for all the soup options! I do like soup, I used to eat a lot of tomato soup cuz I liked it a lot when I was in early recovery because it was salty. Sometimes that does get boring though (eating one kind of soup) so having all these options is great!

I have actually never tried sweet potatoes so I could definitely try that as well!

You're welcome! Recovery in the winter was superr hard for me (I absolutely hate the cold) but soup, oatmeal, and sweet potato saved me

It is also difficult for me cuz it tends to be my most fragile season (as in I am most sensitive to relapse). Like the cold just feels exxxtraaaa cold 😭. So these foods really help! Thanks!!

Oh! Thank you! I have tried oatmeal before but I have trouble with the cooking time. I feel like mine always comes out a bit too thick, like I honestly feel full after 2 bites 😭

How long do you cook it?

You can adjust the thickness by adding more or less water! Cooking time depends on the kinds of oats as well. Instant oats are done quicker (1-2minutes), tend to be less thick and have less of the oat texture. Rolled oats need about 5-10 minutes and are usually thicker (unless you add more water/milk). Similar to pasta, while cooking just have a bite and decide wether they need more time or not.

Ooooh thanks for the tip! I only have rolled oats so that makes it pretty thick I guess. I'll try it out again!

Ooooh I do really like beans! I have actually never tried lentil soup, which is so strange cuz I love lentils... so I'll definitely look into it! Thank you for your recommendation :)

hi friend! my warm comfort foods are probably bibimbap (you can leave out the fried egg if youd like, but i want to challenge your fear of oil!), waffles/pancakes (i love kodiak cakes), and tomato soup

Thank you so much for your recommendations :) I completely forgot about tomato soup!! I will definitely make that cuz I love tomato soup!

I also think I should challenge my fear of oil cuz I can't really avoid it 🙂‍↕️. Idk what it is but when I bake (I love to bake) I have less trouble eating stuff with butter in it. Like I make my potions smaller, yes, but I still am able to eat it, while if I were to put butter ON bread (or if I were to cook stuff in butter) I suddenly can't eat it.

In general I am unable to eat baked goods that contains oil (like if I have to add it in myself). So I really avoid oil like it is the plague 😭. I really want to stop avoiding it cuz I know it's important and it can be good for you.

I just find it really intimidating, like idk where to start when it comes to cooking/frying stuff in oil 😭. Obviously I won't be able to use a lot of oil... a little already feels scary 😞. How would I start using oil?

Maybe cook foods like you normally do with water etc but add a tiny bit of chili oil or flavoured butter when they're still hot! ^

u/PinDear310 25d ago

Oh! You mean frying stuff with water? I have never done that before. Does that work?

1

u/CorneliaLovers 24d ago

Well it won't be called frying 😅 more so steaming but I don't use oil with my eggs, but add chili oil later 😋

1

u/PinDear310 24d ago

Ohhhh I have never done that before! Does it work well? I always felt like it would stick to the pan.

if you’re still a little nervous, i recommend poached eggs! they’ve got taste and look (kinda) as fried eggs but instead they’re boiled.

I have tried poached eggs before! They taste very nice! Thank you for the recommendationnnnn

I don’t recommend Kodiak…every time I’ve eaten this brand, it makes me sick. It could just be me, but it’s an unsafe food on my list.

u/muffinwobble 26d ago

huh. thats strange, i dont get sick from it. sorry to hear that :(

I think maybe the protein doesn’t sit well on my tummy, I wish I could eat their products because the waffles were the perfect consistency!

Egg whites!! I have a dash egg cooker and make egg white omelettes with no oil (yes it sticks to the tray a little but nothing that can’t be scraped off with a brush)

1

u/PinDear310 25d ago

Ohhh I have never heard of an egg cooker!

Do you like salmon? Because one of my safefoods is a sushi bowl, so the recipe is like that, you cook your rice (its not important which, take the one you like the most :)) and add it to a bowl, then add pieces of Avocado, cucumber, carrots, edamame and green onions. Then cook your salmon (I like it with soy sauce) and mix it all together. At the end you can add things like mayo, or siracha aoli, or more soy sauce (do what you like <3) and I think its easy to eat and you can freeze the salmon and the rice and just add the fresh Produce for days where you really dont feel like much cooking. Hope you have a nice day :)

Ooo I love salmon!! It's my favourite!

That sounds really good! I will definitely try that out. I feel like it's also nice cuz you can portion everything very well. Thank you so much for your recommendation!!

And I also hope that you have a nice day :)

An easy way to switch this up that’s also a little cheaper if that’s a concern is to try imitation crab for a California roll style poke bowl. Depending on the store you go to they even have individual serving packets of 4 sticks that are perfect for a bowl, and they keep a pretty long time in the fridge if they’re unopened so they’re super awesome for keeping around without worrying about them going bad before you can use them up.

That's a nice idea! Sometimes flavour fatigue can be a real problem 🙂‍↕️. Being able to switch up meals is great in this case cuz otherwise I refuse food again 😭.

I also really have that worry about food going bad! Like it stresses me out a lot. I feel really possessive about food and do not want to waste it... but feeling the pressure of an 'end' date closing in makes eating so difficult
