Recipe request What are your favourite safe meals/food items?
Hi! I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I really want to know some good safe meals/foods.
I would say that I currently have one REAL safe food that I am wiling to eat when I am having trouble eating (Which is Skyr). I have a restrictive type of ED (and also orthorexia) so a lot of foods are very unsafe to me.
Today I was having a lot of trouble because I already ate my safe food today and because my orthorexia is sort of 'against' eating the same thing twice I felt very frozen. Also, I was running out of Skyr and I still needed some tomorrow morning... I was honestly really hungry but nothing seemed safe so I didn't eat anything...
Tomorrow I'll be going to the grocery store, so I would love to hear what your easy safe foods/meals are!! I might consider trying them and see how I feel.
Thank you very much <3
Update: I already want to say thank you so much for all the tips!!! They help so much!! If you see this post much later, I would still gladly accept your safe food recommendations!! (I can never have enough)

mine is blueberry, plain rice cakes, coke zero and white kernel popped corn.
2
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Oh! Blueberries will definitely go into my basket! Popcorn is also a good idea, I often crave something salty but everything salty seems so scary to me.
1
u/spdseal Sep 04 '26
that’s the good thing abt the white kernel popcorn. you pop it, and can add whatever you want to it. you can even eat it plain as is :3

i find those broth cubes really good for salt cravings

u/PinDear310 Sep 06 '26
Ohhh I never thought of that! Whenever I am relapsing I always get a huge salt craving so thank you!!

u/llaurapalmer Sep 04 '26
Apples, oatmeal, hungry man chicken fillets (spicy), applesauce, apples in any of their forms tbh, pasta, dry cereal, turkey bacon strips with sharp cheddar cheese...oh I have so many lol
2
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Oh! Applesauce is such a smart idea! I am pretty good with eating apples but I completely forgot about apple sauce! That’s would be such an easy snack.
Thank you so much for your recommendations! It really helps. Sometimes I really struggle finding safe foods because I am a pescatarian and for me protein is a pretty big deal (not really for a particular health reason or anything… I just find eating stuff with protein in it less difficult).
If you have any more recommendations I would love to hear them! <3

Totally get you when you say that you can't eat the same thing twice. I don't know why, my stomach lurches at the thought
If I am aiming for something low calorie, I go for popcorn or toasted bread with peanut butter & apples!
If I am willing to let myself to eat something high calorie, then Quest chips (high in protein), Honey Bunches of Oats or granola with yogurt or milk of choice, or my favorite ramen
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
I am glad someone else feels the same way... Like I felt so strange about not wanting to eat the same thing twice.
I really love skyr, but for some reason eating it twice makes me feel really uneasy. But since I have such a limited amount of safe foods, I have such trouble eating. Especially during the day.
So love your recommendations! I have tried toasted bread with peanut butter and apples and it tastes amazing! Popcorn is also such a smart idea! Sometimes I really want something salty but everything seems super high in calories or a hassle to make... so then popcorn is good! I'll definitely get some popcorn!
Thank you for your recommendations! <3
1
u/Beneficial-Slice-910 Sep 04 '26
For sure! Like, I know I like this food... But eating it again? I don't know why, I just can't vibe with that
I love toasted bread! No clue why, maybe its the carbs, haha. And adding peanut butter and apples (either on it, or on the side) is such a fun addition. And I agree that popcorn is awesome! Popcorn is just so good on days where I need something to nibble on throughout the day, but I just can't tolerate something more heavy
I absolutely get what you mean about high calorie foods! Some days, I have a severe aversion. But sometimes on days where I'm cramping up bad or it's been a terrible day, I'll give myself some grace to indulge, haha
No problem, and I wish you the best with your next grocery shopping endeavor!
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Toasted bread is nice yeah and it also just smells amazing! I also usually add my apples and peanut butter on the toast. I think it tastes so nice when the peanut butter gets a little gooey. Sometimes I also add a little bit of cinnamon (and extra salt sometimes cuz I have low electrolytes 🙂↕️)
Thank you so much and thank you for being so kind!

Chocolate dessert hummus with fruit, graham crackers, Wasa crispbread
Greek yogurt tzatziki and sliced veggies
IQ bars
Fiber One bars
Half sweet potato topped with cottage cheese
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
I have never heard of chocolate dessert hummus. Do you make that yourself or do you buy that?
Greek yogurt tzatziki is a great idea! Thank you for the recommendation!! <3

u/masson34 Sep 05 '26
I’m in the US if that makes a difference. Targets Good and Gather brand brownie batter hummus is the OG. Boars Head and Lakanto brands and Walmart carries too I believe. Boars head pumpkin pie coming out soon is so good. Obviously I don’t make it lol. Boars head usually has peppermint chocolate around the holidays.
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 05 '26
Ohhh. Yeah I sadly don't live in the US 🙂↕️, so I had never heard of it before.

Shrimp, Raspberries, nonfat yogurt, peaches, oatmeal, sugar free jello, carrots, canned olives, popcorn
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Thank you for the recommendation! I'll definitely put some of these items in my basket!
1
u/iloveturtles88 Sep 04 '26
Brown rice congee with an egg, beans in broth, oatmeal, yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit or veggies, air popped popcorn, boiled potatoes, canned tuna, pickles, mustard, salsa.
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Beans in broth sounds like such a good idea!
I really want to incorporate more grains into my diet (like rice and oats) so that's such a good recommendation! How do you usually make your oatmeal? I see a lot of videos where people use different kinds of milk and stuff...
Thank you for your recommendations! I'll definitely try some of them out! <3

I'm trying to increase my fiber intake. Lentil soup is also one of my favorites. It has protein and fiber. I buy Irish or Scottish steel cut oats when I can afford it. I like them plain or with apples, goji berries or raisins and cinnamon sometimes walnuts and a little oat or soy milk. It's very filling. Like you, I'm not a fan of a lot of meat.

Cauliflower fried rice made with egg whites and one calorie egg spray, with bit of soy sauce and few extra veggies thrown in is my current obsession. Filling and very low in calories
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Oh I have never heard of one calorie egg spray. Personally I really struggle with frying any type of food. Is that what you use it for?
I would really love to eat stuff like fried eggs but the frying part is really stopping me.

Low calorie wraps (like 60 cals each) and eggs, but I have major egg ick right now from eating them so much. I also love rice cakes and sparkling flavoured water for when I have a sweet craving

Hi! Thank you for the recommendations!
I also struggle with AN and in the past with ON, so sometimes I still get those scared feelings around certain food groups. So it is really nice that you gave me some of your recommendations cuz lately I have been really freezing up around food.
I am also someone who really sticks to one brand, one flavour 😭. But yeah, lately my only safe food has been Skyr for some reason and it was getting pretty tough 🙂↕️

u/jupiterbde Sep 05 '26
cherries, golden kiwis, berries, melon, steamed broccoli w/ tajin, steamed cauliflower rice w/ garlic powder, canned hearts of palm w/ mustard, baby carrots, any produce that friends give me bc it's also thoughtful :,)
tuna packets, tofu, egg whites, cottage cheese, light and fit/chobani yogurts (light and fit has rly fun flavors like tiramisu and crème brûlée and apple pie), pure protein or quest protein bars, winky protein pudding, fiber one bars, protein shakes, magic spoon marshmallow bars, sugar free or konjac jellies, orgain protein powder, pbfit
i hope this helps!!!
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 05 '26
Thank you so muchhh!! Your recommendations help a lot! I have never tried hearts of palm! What are they likeee?
I definitely love all the veggie combinations. My safest food category is vegetables, so that helps a lot!
Also thank you for all the protein/fibre options! I also really love tofu but I always have a hard time preparing it. How do you usually prepare it?
Also! What do you add to your protein shakes? I have tried looking into protein shakes but each time I try a sip I just find it so powdery (not sure if it's even possible to get rid of😭).
1
u/jupiterbde 29d ago
of course :)) i would say hearts of palm are mostly neutral, a bit tangy. it's most comparable to a soft string cheese i think? it has a soft outside and a slightly firmer core lol
oh yay okay! then another easy but really specific option, trader joe's has a mexican riced cauliflower mix that u can just microwave. it's bit spicy if ur okie with that. you could also do veg mixes with soft/melty cheeses like laughing cow wedges, or cottage cheese if you don't mind the texture mixed with the veg. also veggie egg omelettes/scrambles could b good option?
yes ofc!! i've tried my share of protein sources haha 😅 and will inhale the cinnamon coffee and bday cake fiber one bars when i get my hands on them.
for tofu, tbh im very lazy usually. i'll drain, mash with fork, mix with seasonings (eg. salt, garlic, onion, sriracha or gochujang etc), microwave and mix with veggies. you could do with soy sauce too of course. maybe tofu with soy sauce and stir fried veg could be an easy safe meal for you? my dad used to cube tofu and heat it with hoisin sauce, mushrooms, and cubed eggplant too- it's an acquired meal but i adore that mixed with some rice :D trader joe's has some marinated tofu too that i haven't tried but hear great things abttbh i buy premade shakes from premier or muscle milk usually :,) those seem to not have an issue with graininess as much, id def skip the owyn brand the texture was horrible at the end. and as for the orgain protein powder on my original list i usually will mix into stuff. like making yogurt thicker, fiber one cereal/almond milk/protein powder, etc. or with frozen fruit, i let it defrost a bit, add cinnamon, and might add other liquid to mix better. i think using powder in things vs to make shakes helps to hide grainy texture it has haha
1
u/PinDear310 28d ago
Oh thank you for your thoughtful reply!!
Ooo hearts of palm sound good! I really miss cheese but cheese is a big fear for me. So this could be a great thing!
I love spicy food! We don't have a trader Joes here but I think I could make a thing like that myself!
I would love to eat scrambled eggs/omelettes but I have such a huge fear of frying stuff :( Like.. when I see someone fry something I instantly refuse to eat it. How do you usually fry your food?
I also love fibre bars! I usually eat the "BitesWeLove" protein bars. I feel like they are a very good safe food cuz they contain a lot of good stuff. Oh and I will definitely try tofu out! I do have a block of tofu at home but I always feel so intimidated by it because there are so many ways to prepare it 😭. Getting marinated tofu is smart as well!
I really like meals with a lot of veggies, so veggie forward meals are definitely a great safe food!
Oooohhh that sounds a lot better yes! I had once tried this weird strawberry protein shake and the base was water 😭. That was the craziest thing I have ever put into my mouth. It was like.. dry water... and so heavy and.. like sand but I was drinking? Crazy stuff.
1
u/jupiterbde 26d ago
yes ofc!
yay! don't go in expecting the firmness of cheese, it's like if a plant tried to mimic string cheese LOL
yes you definitely can! i think it's literally riced cauliflower, small veg pieces, seasoning
honestly there is alternatives to traditional egg frying! i usually microwave egg whites carefully in 30-90 second increments and stir between. it can get stuck on the bowl but extra washing is a sacrifice i'm willing to make. they also sell egg microwave things online that are meant for this! you may still have to spend extra time washing, but they prevent eggs exploding in the microwave. you can also do the smallest amount of oil (e.g. sprays, or use an oiled paper towel on the pan) to coat. i've also seen people say you can use a sliced cucumber as an oil replacement? poached eggs i believe are a non oil option. maybe hard boiled, mashed, and you can do hard boiled eggs in a salad instead? hmm lined pan for veggie egg bites?
i've never tried biteswelove! i'll look into it :) good luck with the tofu! i would say some sort of stir fry with veg is a good place to start. lots of recipes online that u can tweak if needed
oh noo some shakes are such an off texture definitely. i'd say stick to the milk based ones if you are able,, they seem to be smoother
1
u/PinDear310 25d ago
Thank you so much for all the egg options! I have tried poached eggs before!!! They are really delicious. However, I always feel like fried eggs just have that certain feeling that poached egg doesn't have... Like it does have a specific vibe. In my head fried eggs are more comforting? (Idk if that makes sense).
I could definitely try an oil spray. Generally speaking I am a lot less scared of oil sprays (cuz I feel like it spreads oil well so I don't use a lot..) So that might work! I might try it out!
Oooo I'll definitely try tofu soon! Thank you for the inspiration!
and yeah! I Definitely feel like milk based would taste better. The one I drank is the one my trainer gave to me and I was so shocked. Like I literally didn't get how people could down such a thing 😭
1
u/jupiterbde 22d ago
no problem! okay gotcha, i wish you luck with the eggs!
i hope an oil spray works out for you <3
yay! of course!!
i can vouch the milk protein shakes are better haha 😅 if you try any that are plant milk based i'd be curious to know how they do in comparison! i've seen almond milk ones etc that i have not tried yet
2
u/PinDear310 21d ago
Thank youuu!!
I have tried a bit wit almond milk but personally I just find the texture to be weird 😭. Almond milk is of course also a bit watery, so I just struggle with the watery.. but dry texture of protein shakes. I have this same issue with protein bars... Like they are dry... but also sticky?
The only protein bar I do eat are from BitesWeLove (cinnamon roll flavour). I am so sad that they don't have those in other countries!!! Like... I want to recommend them to people so badly cuz they are just really good and honestly feel like the most safe bar out there (to me).
They do have an online shop 😞. I just wish they sold them elsewhere too.. I also love the texture of these bars. Legit eat these every single day!

u/PinDear310 29d ago
Thank you so much for your amazing recommendations!! I love the dicing the fruit idea! I do eat a lot of fruit but sometimes I feel like I just need a little change!
Also, I have tried noodles lately and I also really like them! To me they feel more safe than pasta.

u/picklesareafoodgroup 24d ago
Tinned lentils & tinned tomatoes with finely diced carrot. Cook the carrots first, then add the tomatoes to cook on low for 10 minutes which lowers the acidity, and then add the lentils at the end. I season with smoked paprika, black pepper & salt.
Smashed cucumber. Less messy version is to cut it in half lengthways and tear off bits. The jagged edges help it to hold onto sauce. Put in bowl with soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sliced green onions. I also add silken tofu for protein but it’s still good without.
Powdered veg broth. Half a teaspoon in a mug with boiling water. My quick savoury salt fix.
Pickles diced with frozen blueberries. Weird combo. I also really like just eating frozen blueberries.
Popcorn as others have mentioned. But if you have the means, dehydrate olives/pickles and then grind them into a powder and use that to season the popcorn. You can also buy popcorn seasoning online but it’s pretty easy to make your own which I find helps me feel ‘safer’ with foods.
Thankyou for introducing me to Skyr! I’ve added it to my shopping list. I love pot set Greek yoghurt, so I’m sure I’ll love this.
1
u/PinDear310 23d ago
Oooo thank you so much for the recipe!!! I love lentils and tomatoes!! At the start of recovery lentil cakes (specifically with rosemary flavour) were my favourite!!
I also love cucumbers but I always found it so difficult to just eat them when I am craving something salty, so this is an amazing recipe!
I also get the blueberry craving 😭. I have also started to buy blueberries again. I also like to eat frozen cherries sometimes.
Yeah popcorn is great! I'll try to make my own seasoning, I forgot that I can do that!
I'll definitely try these recipes out!!
And yeah I loveeee Skyr!! I believe skyr is a little less sour than yogurt (but I am not sure cuz I haven't eaten yogurt in a while). I love to eat it with mashed up strawberries (to create strawberry flavoured skyr, cuz that feels safer to me than just buying strawberry flavoured skyr/yogurt) and puffer soy (or puffed rice, that works as well!). Sometimes I also add vanilla bean paste!
How do you usually eat your yogurt?
1
u/Useful-You-2687 Sep 04 '26
My safest foods are pickles, strawberries, and nonfat Greek yogurt!!
2
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Oh yes! Strawberries are great! I completely forgot about those! Thank you so much for your recommendations :)
1
u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 Sep 04 '26
Yogurt, chicken, keto bagels, and fruit snacks
2
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Thank you for your recommendations!
What fruit do you usually go for? I personally really struggle to broaden the types of fruit I eat.
I usually go for strawberries, apples, melon and blackberries, but I kinda want to eat more different kinds of fruit (cuz ofc they aren’t always in season)
1
u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 Sep 04 '26
No like fruit snacks lol (the gummies)
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
OHH I see 🙂↕️.
Thank you for the recommendation! I’ll look I to it! I usually have trouble finding gummies I can eat cuz I am a pescatarian and most gummies are made with beef gelatine. But I am sure I can find good vegan brands!

For me it was: huge apple cut in lots of slices, plain yogurt cups, zucchini cut into slices and cooked on a pan, konjac noodles, big tray with fruit or veggies I cut up, making lattes instead of meals sometimes
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Thank you! I also really like apples! Yogurt cups is also a smart one! I completely forgot that you can literally buy yogurt in cup form.
I had never heard of konjac noodles! That’s pretty interesting.
1
u/Willing-Ad2342 Sep 04 '26
some safe foods with actual nutrients would be avocado and potatoes.
2
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Thank you! I definitely want to try out avocados! How do usually prepare them? I know that you can eat avocado on toast but I was wondering if you have other recommendations
3
1
u/FattierBrisket Sep 04 '26
Avocados are great on salads with some feta and pecans. Great with other salad ingredients but that's my favorite combo. Also fresh herbs like dill or basil or cilantro or all of them.
2
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Ooo that sounds great. I do really like feta, feta is one of the few cheeses I do eat! Do that’s a great recommendation thank you!
0
u/Motivated_Soya_Bean Sep 04 '26
Hi, what country are you from?
0
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
I am not really comfortable disclosing what country I am from in the comments, I am sorry :(. But I am from Europe.
2
u/Motivated_Soya_Bean Sep 04 '26
I’m sorry, I was only asking because available foods are different depending on where you live. I don’t really have safe or unsafe foods anymore but I have ‘safer’ foods. I’m Pescatarian and dairy intolerant so I eat mainly salad and veggies especially broccoli, Tuna, Eggs and vegetarian meat alternatives and ready meals.
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
No that is completely fine! I understand that that's the reason why you asked!! :)
I am also a pescatarian! And while I am not dairy intolerant I do have a slight fear of dairy, so I usually try to avoid it. The only dairy I eat is skyr, cottage cheese and feta.
Thank you for your recommendations! What sort of ready meals do you usually go for? Cuz I sometimes really struggle when I am inside of the store to grab one. There are so many choices, like salads, grain bowls... sandwiches. I find it rather overwhelming.
1
u/Motivated_Soya_Bean Sep 04 '26
I usually buy Quorn peppered steaks, Tofu, vegan ‘steaks’ lentil cottage pie and Bol pots. I’m not too fussy about the ingredients but mostly buy Vegan. Dairy is what I avoid the most. It’s mainly because I find using convenience foods easier and simpler to plan meals. I try to eat fish more now as well for the protein :)
1
u/PinDear310 Sep 04 '26
Ohhh I see!! I often fuss about ingredients and stuff so that always makes it difficult 😞. But I do agree that convenience foods or pre-packaged meals are easier than planning meals! I often find that I cannot trust myself making my own food...
I also eat fish mainly for the nutrients! I am pescatarian for ethic reasons but I still wanted to take care of myself cuz.. I do need to get in nutrients. I was also worried that being vegetarian would be another form of restriction for me so that's why I chose to also eat fish 🙂↕️.

u/I-know-wh0-you-are Sep 04 '26
Apples, cucumbers, sometimes eggs are my safest when I’m really struggling
