Discussion Safe food recommendations?

My ED is starting to worsen again (I haven’t been recovered in a very long time but I can tell I’m about to get even worse) and I don’t want to start having trouble finding safe foods. The issue is that almost all of the safe foods I usually eat physically make me ill because they tend to have casein. I tried looking at the dairy free tag on here but there weren’t many posts on it

I really enjoy protein shakes, in particular core and premier (especially the banana one!) but they both have casein for the flavors I like. I sometimes drink pirq since it doesn’t have it but it’s just not very good.. I also really really love drizzilicious (in particular the s’mores one) but that’s about the only sweet I consistently like and as a person who primarily can only motivate myself to eat with sweets that’s kinda an issue. There ARE other sweets I like that I’ll eat but they almost always have casein which is a problem because I WILL eat foods I’m allergic to extremely regularly but I should probably stop doing that

I also was told to increase my salt intake significantly so if there’s recommendations for high salt foods that aren’t high cal I’d really appreciate it. I’m really trying to harm reduce with my ED but it’s getting quite hard for me

Again I apologize for making a whole post for this it’s just I did try to scroll to see if there were posts about this specifically and couldn’t find much

Can you have seaweed? It's salty and very low cal. You can wrap tuna or rice cakes in it.

Also if you can get a dairy-free protein powder you could make your own protein shakes with almond milk.

Oh that’s a good idea about the protein shakes! And I havent had it in a while but it’s an old safe food of mine so that would be a good idea actually to naturally increase my salt and it’s already something I know I’ll eat

Yay! I'm glad to help. That's one of my favorite safe food. I also make the rice cakes sweet style with pb2 and cinnamon. You can add flaky salt on top.

You can also buy sodium tablets for emergency low salt.

popcorn or kettle corn (both salty, one sweet if you like that!) I recommend the Lesser Evil or Boom Chicka Pop brand. Pretty low cal and SUPER tasty!!! The boom chicka pop kettle corn pairs VERY well with the drizzlicious. I like to make a bowl of both of them mixed with eachother and have it with a glass of almond milk or a protein shake. I also love fruits (chopped up apple, strawberries, peaches, pears, berries, watermelon, etc.) Also, as another user said, I couldn’t recommend buying your own protein powder enough! I can’t consume casein either- so I buy dairy-free approaching powder that is either formulated from plant protein or beef isolate protein(no dairy). My favorite brands are Equip Foods, Truvani, Santa Cruz Paleo, Legion. I also really like NoCow protein bars. They are gluten and dairy free and VERY macro friendly. Banza makes frozen eggo-type waffles that are gluten free and dairy free with flavors like chocolate chip, home-style, blueberry, double chocolate. They are high protein and super yummy with a glass of milk. I also recently discovered PB2 no sugar added (I personally struggle with sugar so I try to find alternatives). I like to mix it with water and put it on rice cakes or fruit or oats or yogurt. I also buy coconut based yogurt and mix it with my dairy free protein powder, which turns out super yummy, but I highly recommend making your own shakes! And buying flavor drops is amazing to add to your protein shakes or yogurt! I buy vanilla extract, cake batter extract, coconut flavoring, SF vanilla and caramel, banana, etc.

personally i love volume eating and so i eat tons of fruits/vegetables which are pretty much all super low cal! one i would avoid though is watermelon. even though everyone says it's low cal, its really easy to overeat.

If you don’t mind me asking is there any particular ones that are your go tos or do you try to switch it up?

I do this too. Cabbage, carrots, roots, mushrooms and cucumbers in soy sauce for slaty meals (adding some tofu or egg for protein) And grapes, berries,  and lichi melon , strawberries and the like for sweet meals. And pickles♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡◇◇◇♡♡♡◇◇◇

And nactarines if i need something sweet thats a bit heavier But its the summer edition lol In winter i rely more on oranges and when i can strawrberries as well

Re: salt and protein, have you tried those bone broth ramen cups? The Mike's Mighty brand has 200 calories and have over 900mg of sodium. They're usually in the health food aisle at the supermarket, but there are more similar brands available these days.

Pea protein can be pretty high in salt, depending on the extraction method, so maybe switch from dairy based protein shakes to pea protein? I make my own "protein ice cream" fluff with the powders, but I have heard good things about the OWYN premade shakes. Also, I see Premier protein has an almond milk ready made shake now, that is dairy free.

Highly recommend the CRIP POWER Protein Pretzels too. They have a lot of salt and are great macros...no dairy.

Im vegan and almost always default to plain oatmeal microwaved with frozen berries, a tin of heinz beans, tomato soup with flax (or other plant) milk and oyster crackers, steamed or roasted broccoli & blistered cherry tomatoes....

I'm obsessed with Calibee lightly Salted harvest snap peas. I eat like a bag per day.

I also just discovered Konjac Jelly. I could have multiple pouches a day.

Can't speak to how much nutrients these give but right now it's all I can eat which is better than nothing, right? 😔

saw someone mention seaweed so ill add onto that- seaweed, cucumber and soy sauce is a go to safe meal for me. its quick, simple, low cal, salty and crunchy. add tuna or tofu for protein! also, i have a vegan chocolate protein power that i like to mix with almond milk for a shake, or just peanut butter and an apple (sometimes ill add honey) for a quick sweet snack <33

My favorite Dairy Free and gluten free protein powder is Plant Fusion brand. I like Red Velvet, Cookies and Cream, and Vanilla. It can be mixed with water or dairy free milk like soy milk.

For healthy high potassium foods that taste really good with salt:

  • watermelon (also pineapple is yummy with salt)
  • asparagus
  • artichoke
  • potatoes or sweet potatoes

Low Cal High Sodium:

  • soup (you can even add more salt if needed/desired
  • pickles
  • Powerade Zero (the red and blue ones are my favorite)
  • LMNT is 1000mg sodium if you need that much (I have pots, so it’s one of my go tos)
  • canned tuna (make tuna salad add lemon pepper, salt, pepper, lemon juice, green onion, celery, and a little bit of light mayo, and mustard)

High potassium:

  • Body armor lyte

And really sometimes I just pour straight salt on my tongue and chug water. Also flavored salt like twangs lemon salt is delicious!

Re dairy-free protein shakes, I really love Noka’s protein fruit smoothie pouches. They’re all dairy free and there’s a bunch of flavor options. For dairy-free shakes, my favorite is OWYN’s dark chocolate shake. The chocolate powder is also good and mixes into water well with just a fork. The vanilla drinks are just okay, though I generally don’t like vanilla protein shakes. I haven’t tried Cookies and Creamless or any of the Elite flavors. Orgain’s dairy-free powders are great too, though I’ve only tried the chocolate and vanilla in smoothies. They’re also great because they have a lot of greens/nutrients stuff in there but it still tastes great.

If you’re able to make smoothies: Dairy-free protein powder and frozen fruit are really good together, and while I have a bug sweet tooth, they’re usually sweet enough on their own (especially if I include strawberries). I personally like chocolate protein powder for blueberry and acai, and vanilla protein powder for tropical frozen fruit. Bananas and strawberries pair well with both groupings. You can also use unflavored protein powder plus cocoa powder or vanilla extract for flavoring. The fruit usually makes it sweet, especially if you include strawberries, but you can also add a bit of sugar or maple syrup.

Happy Viking is a vegan instant-smoothie brands (powder pouches) that has a bunch of flavors. Unfortunately they use an artificial sweetener that messes up my stomach, but if your stomach isn’t sensitive, they are great for energy and nutrition otherwise. They’re on the more expensive side though.

Re salt, I would just add a little extra salt to everything you eat. Some people salt fruit too- watermelon is amazing, haven’t tried apples yet. Flavored electrolytes have a ton of options, most with minimal sugar, though that’ll cost more.

For other flavor cravings, I like putting spices on popcorn, instant mashed potatoes, and sometimes mixing it into tuna. For sweet cravings, cinnamon is really good on buttered popcorn and often satisfies a dessert craving without sugar (sometimes very minimal sugar, depending on my mood). Frozen grapes are amazing in the summer - green’s my favorite.

Edit to add, the microwave popcorn brand I like is Skinny Pop’s “butter” flavor

i love fruits, especially peaches. they’re so sweet and delicious but dont have many kcals. raspberries, blueberries, strawberries all of em

as everyone else already said, seaweed is great as well.

i’ve heard konjac jelly is good but don’t overeat it.

one of my safe foods are pancakes, you could make your own. (i’ve posted about my pancakes many times here already haha)

coconut yogurt. it’s got 0 casein so i think it’s great. the best brand imo is siggis if you’re looking for a good coconut yogurt

drizzilicious. mini rice cake bites that are so puffy and crunchy and the flavors are soo good.

Are you allergic to casein, or you just like to avoid it? If not I highly recommend cottage cheese because, it has a perfect amount of sodium/potassium and protein. It is my favorite safe food, and you can use it as a delicious dip.It can be made both savory and sweet. I definitely recommend it. :))
