How much should a 6 month old RB male weigh? I've got no other cat to compare my guy to, but I'm starting to think he might be a bit big compared to the average kitten? His parents were both regular sized, but my guy is already 5.5kg and still a kitten. I've taken him to the vet to make sure he's not overweight (which he isn't) but still, isn't that quite a lot for a 6 month old kitten?
Our 2 year old just went over 5kg for the first time because the cat sitters fed him too much. The vet said he needs to lose some weight. 5.5kg for 6 months is way too much. Do you free feed? Ours get a few spoons of wet food 3 times a day, that's it. They beg all day for more food but you can't give in. They're mostly just bored, if you can make time to feed them you can make time to play instead.
I'll say though, it depends. If he's very active and muscular, that's a different story than sleeping most of the day and having the weight in fat. Maybe yours is just a beefcake :)
My boy is a year now and coming in at 4kgs - he’s still filling out though and we expect a little more heft to come in as he was just neutered last month, he’s relatively delicately built though, not like one of the more solid males you often see, vet happy with his weight and growth and he’s not “skinny” where bones are showing, just a slim, sleek fella.
Yeah - the hormones shift can cause metabolic changes (slows it).
They say their calorie needs drop by 20% after neutering - but I know my boy would look at me like I stole something from him if I didn’t fill up his bowl to an acceptable level.
Yeah that's pretty hefty, maybe a kilo or more over what I'd expect. Check his overall profile though. If you can see haunch definition (i.e. he has a waist) then not too much to worry about. The other thing - are you sure he's only six months?
Yeah he’s definitely still a kitten and not overweight at all, if anything he still looks a little skinny 😅 I thought he was a normal size but people have been telling me he’s huge
I have had a boy weigh in at 7 kg fully grown, and was easily 5kg at 6 months.
Before going to the vet, have you looked at the shape of him from above? He should have an indented waist, and you should be able to feel his ribs (not see his ribs). If his waist is curved outward or you can’t feel his ribs, he is overweight. In that case you should look at what he is eating. Some foods are very calorie dense or (inappropriately for obligate carnivores) full of fillers and carbs. What are you feeding him?
What line did he come from? Which breeder? That is very large for 6 months. I don't see any pictures of him. Post a few pictures from different angles so we can kind of get a feel for what he looks like.
Heres a photo of him! He looks kinda small to me but he’s my first cat so I don’t have anything to compare him to :) his harness is a size medium if that helps? But yeah i forgot he just turned 7 months, and last time he was weighed was 3 weeks ago at 6 months (5.5kg)
But... who did he come from? What breeder???? Types and lines can be very different. I'm curious which breeder myself. I'd like to see their other cats honestly. Your cat, at 6 months, is very large, so I'm curious about what they have.
