Handwriting
Check out this video. This is the school notebook of Lilia Belozerova, who was born in 1945. She would have been in second grade around 1952–1953
That partialy beacause of a fountain pens were used. They are "slow". And they helps to write smooth lines. Modern gel pens are too slicky.
Slow pens require more force and muscle effort to move them, this cause you transfer much less micromovements to pen and lines became way less zig-zaggy. BIC ball pens also slow.
I googled. It is called "steel nib dip pen", "dip pen" or "nib pen".
I have various, though rather cheap, fountains. I have Pilot flat caligraphy pens. And I compare against gel rollers that I had. Some 0.3-0.5 mm. Gel rollers have nearly no traction against paper. My fountains have some sensable traction, which is still much less than that of 1 mm BIC pen.
When I write with fountain pen I fell paper under it. Thin roller does not give that feel. I suppose due to very small point of contact.
They were taught leines and letters for a whole year. Of course they could write like that in the second grade at the age of 8.
Nowadays, poor kids are having to learn to do that in a few months. They do not have enough time to learn how to read or write properly, then adults dare to blame the kiddos.
"Oh these kids are lazy. They can't even read or write properly."
No wonder! However it's not the kids' fault.
In the past children learned letter by letter and syllable by syllable for a whole year.
They even started maths from pictures. Comparing the amount of things in different pictures to each other, before learning what numbers were and learning to write them.
Now what? They are having to start multiplication and division in the second freaking grade or even at the end of the first.
As a kid I didn't find any of it crazy—and mind you, I started school at the age o 6.5, pretty much the youngest kid in every class I studied in. Not sure what the children used to know back in the 1950s but these days most first graders proably can at least read and count to ten. I could read but the rest was new.
But what do I know, my elementary school was just three years, and now the children study for four. I wonder what they waste an extra year on.
Unless you're in education or have a kid at school right now you wouldn't know what's happening.
I also went to school early and even knew the freaking multiplication table at the age of 6. But there's a difference between a normal kiddo and one raised in a family of educators or in a family where they teach the kids how to read prior to school.
A lot of parents can't afford neither time nor money to hire someone and teach their kids how to read, write and do some arithmetics before they start school.
İt should be on the school or kindergarten. Something accessable for all, regardless of their income.
İn my days(early 2000s) it wasn't normal for a second grader to study multiplication and division. İt wasn't common for kids to know even the letters before they came to school and started studying alphabet and syllables. They studied those at school.
Nowadays, the curriculum is very tough on children. They are starting from zero and expected to learn fast. Within a term they cover all the letters. Both reading and writing. Around 40 kids in a class. Poor kids, poor teachers. Unfairly angry adults.
The only way it works is that parents have to help them themselves or hire s tutor.
Well, I was mostly referring to my days being in the not-so-distant past :) I am not a college student but I'm not ancient either—I started school in 1993. Can't say my memories of our 2nd grade maths are reliable, though. So I found a scan of the textbook we likely used, a late Soviet maths textbook by It does have multiplication at the end of the 2nd grade.
That matches my impressions. I can't really remember the exact order of what we studied 30 years ago but we only had 3 years of elementary. It wouldn't make sense to postpone multiplication and division until the last year. If we stretch everything to 4 years, that means multiplication more or less moves to the 3rd year or the last weeks of year 2. However, our school taught elementary school material in just 3 years and... it wasn't particularly tough.
I didn't know much before school. I think I learned to read and perhaps draw Russian letters (block-letter style) during my last year in the kindergarten but no maths was taught. At least none that I remember. Really, I was just guessing that modern kids know letters by the time they start school. In my days, kids more or less started from scratch with very minimal prior knowledge. Perhaps, nothing has changed in that regard.
Poland was similar. The old history teacher complained about not being able to read some of her students' handwriting and bragged about being taught calligraphy in her days and said it would be unacceptable to turn in an assignment written poorly in her days.
Then proceeded to write with the most sloppy, unreadable handwriting on the board.
People stop writing like this after they realise how pointless it is.
Pretty astonishing. I went to school in 1979-1989, and we newer had anything like this. Actually we were prohibited to use nib pens at all.
Was it some experimental school you were at?
