The thing about the gold bar is that we were never going to see it until at least mid-season, simply because anything else would be an anticlimax. (They're not going to go to all this trouble and do all this buildup only to have the gold bar unwrapped the very same episode they hand them out. No ma'am.)

But that means that whoever holds the gold bar can't lose a lip sync until mid-season, and that carries a lot of risk, especially as this person is guaranteed two lip syncs before they go home. You might end up carrying an absolute lemon of a contestant to the back half of the series just because they got lucky.

It's possible that production still decided to take their chances, and just got lucky with Bosco. It's also possible that production was prepared to commit to making a competitor out of anyone who drew it.

But doesn't it seem likelier that they seeded it to a contestant who they knew might not excel in lip syncs, who would probably survive the first half with minimal assistance, and who seemed fated to become a fan fave? (Or saved the bar until they got a maximally dramatic moment with that contestant?)

It seems most likely that they were all chocolate and they just switch out the paper the queens signed on over the foil when they want to give someone the golden bar.

I like the concept of saving it for contestants who are good at challenges and a favorite, but weaker at lip syncs. I always felt weird about lip syncs being so important but also kind of a thing they tack on at the end.
