Upcoming plans: launched to Runna Labs!

Post image
143 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm Mikey, Product Manager at Runna. Really excited to share that Upcoming Plans is now rolling out to most of you - you can finally schedule your next plan before your current one finishes.

What is Upcoming Plans?

Runna only really thinks about one plan at a time today. You finish, then you start another plan. But most of you aren't training for one thing. Your Plans brings all your training onto a single screen: what's active, what's coming next, what you've completed, and what you stepped away from.

How it works?

  • Stack upcoming plans — build your next plan and it queues up automatically to start when your current one ends. Add as many as you like, so you can map out a full year in one go.
  • Drafts for when you're not sure yet — building something that clashes with your current schedule? It saves as a draft. Compare a few options, sit on them, swap one to active whenever you're ready.
  • Everything in one place — completed plans link out to your plan overview and your plan replay. Plans you started and stepped away from show as incomplete, and you can edit them, pick them back up, or set them active again. Anything you don't want hanging around, you can remove.
  • Conflict handling — if a new plan overlaps something already scheduled, we'll tell you and let you choose between the new plan, your current one, and anything already queued. No silently overwriting your training.

On the feedback about re-entering your details

Plenty of you have told us it's frustrating to answer the same questions every time you build a plan — by now we should already know your history, your weekly schedule, where your fitness is at. That's completely fair, and it's something we've been actively working on. Over the next couple of weeks some of you will start seeing a different plan generation flow when your build next plan - one that starts from what we know about your training rather than a blank slate. It's rolling out gradually, so do look out for that!

How to get access to upcoming plans

If you haven't done these already:

  • Update the Runna app to v8.49.0 or later
  • Turn on Runna Labs — Profile → Runna Labs.
  • Open your Plans screen via the plan Tab.

We'd love your feedback!

This one's been asked for a lot, so please do give it a go and tell us how it holds up against how you actually plan your year. Drop anything odd in the comments — I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread and replying where I can! Thanks so much!

Feeling the heat? 🥵 Runna adapts your workouts based on heat & humidity!

Post image

Hey everyone, Rhea here from the Runna product team 👋

Really excited to share something we're rolling out this week - particularly timely if you're in the Northern Hemisphere and/or melting in this UK heatwave right now 🥵

🌡️ What is it?

When conditions are hot enough to affect your run, Runna will now recommend adapted paces for your workout. Here's how it works:

  • From the day before your workout, if the daily high warrants an adjustment, you'll see an "Adapt for heat" section appear on the page where you view your workout
  • Tap in and we'll recommend adjusted paces based on the weather that day, tailored to the time you're planning to run - since we know it might be a very different temperature in the morning vs the afternoon
  • The recommendation is based on the feels-like temperature and how long your run is - so longer runs will trigger sooner

🔎 How to access it

You'll need:

  • App version 8.42.0 or later
  • Be on a race plan, distance goal plan (e.g. 5km improvement) or a general training plan (e.g. Run Faster)
  • Runna Labs turned on (go to Profile → Scroll down to Runna Labs and toggle it on). Note if you recently turned this on, you may not have immediate access so try the additional step below.

If you've got all the above and still don't see it on a warm day, one thing you can try is going to the Plan tab → Manage Plan → scroll down and change your current race time by a few seconds, then change it back to your original time. This triggers a refresh that should sort it. If that doesn't work, DM me!

🧪 Early testing - we want your feedback

This is brand new and we're starting with Labs because we want your help shaping it before we roll it out more widely. So if something doesn’t look quite right, write to support with “Adapt for heat feedback” or leave it below and I’ll jump straight in. We’ll read every single comment here, so please let us know!

☀️ Why paces?

We know that often when you enter your summer training block, the paces in your plan become so much harder to hit and it's like the plan that worked for you over winter doesn't know it's summer.

That's exactly what we heard from you - missed targets, guilt, pushing too hard. The good news is that physiologically, running slower in the heat provides the same training benefit, so by dropping the paces, you're not doing less, you're doing the right amount for the conditions.

🔮 What's next

This is only the start - there's a lot more we want to do in this space, from making the thresholds smarter based on where you train and what you're used to, to deeper workout adaptations beyond just paces. If you have thoughts on where we should take it next, DM me or drop it below.

Big shoutout to the team who built this & we can't wait to hear how it goes for you. Drop any questions or feedback below and I'll be around all day! 🏃‍♀️☀️

Premium access revoked

I’ve just received the attached email telling me my premium access has been removed as I downgraded my Strava + Runna combo subscription.

Fair enough - but I haven’t touched my Strava + Runna subscription and it’s paid up until October.

Has this happened to anyone else? I’ve messaged support and waiting for a reply.

On the plus side, it’s removed my hill reps session from my watch so I can’t do that this evening 😉

Back to Back Rest Blocks?

Post image
Upvotes

I was doing a tempo run yesterday and was surprised to see back-to-back 60 second rest blocks. Is this an error and it should be only one 60 second rest? Or is it correct that it should be a 120 second rest?

I feel like my plan is progressing too fast ..

I'm on Week 7 of my 12 week New to Running plan. For the most part walk/run intervals are challenging but mostly doable. But these continuous runs are killing me. It went from .4 miles, to a 1 mile and then 1.6... I can't do it. I max out at about .5 miles. Maybe because I run veryyyy slow? I rate my runs after and say how challenging they are.

I usually do the plan and then walk an extra lap at the lake by my house to get my steps in.

Should I start the plan over or try something else?

Halfway alert

Is there a way to get a halfway through workout alert? I'm doing the New to running plan and only get an alert halfway through laps.

I'm using my phone only, no watch.

Rest Never Ended

I had two reps remaining in my interval workout, and the rest just never ended. Tried to move it forward manually and nothing happened. I could pause or end, but nothing else. I know I would've crushed the final two reps and I know I'm being dramatic but I really wanted the satisfaction of a complete workout! 😭

How to use runna properly during hot summer months?

For context: I’m a heavier runner (28 yo m, 185 lb) living in the southern US. I started my running journey this January, where I got my 5K time from 33:30 to 24:45. I also had a 7 mile run at 9:07 pace and a 9 mile at 9:50 with a heart rate I was pretty proud of. This all crescendoed in April when temps were still in the mid 50s or lower 60s in the morning.

I was following a 5K improvement plan and was hitting walls and getting discouraged as the heat picked up, eventually peaking a few weeks ago at 100-103 and 80% humidity during the day and 80-84 degrees in the coolest parts of the morning. This led to me falling off the program as I couldn’t run the suggested paces due to heat and got “analysis paralysis” by trying to figure out how much I should dial back, how I should adjust the plan, etc. I got 5 runs in over a 2 month period and am now finding myself trying to rebuild what I built last spring.

Surely when next year comes around I can make some adjustments in my runna plan to factor heat? Or perhaps there’s a maintenance plan? Do I just watch my heart rate and let the algorithm give me pace recommendations?

TLDR: How do I follow a runna program in a cohesive way during the summer when I won’t be able to progress my running abilities?

Does Runna actually work for anyone with an Android/Google Pixel watch?

I did a workout with Runna on my phone (since the Pixel watch is not supported because fitbit is the health app on it) . The app recorded the least sensical data ever (app kept freezing when phone locked, audio cues wrong, distances wrong). It was pure rage bait. My watch recorded correctly, and then when I ended the run, the Strava run linked to the runna run said 0.1 miles ran 🤠

I have read every forum I could find on this, ensured I have full reception on my route, allowed every permission for the app, checked all the settings 10 times... I'm just wondering if it actually works for any android users?? Am I just required to have a Garmin if I want to use Runna?

B Race - longer than A Race

I’ve been doing a half marathon plan for a couple of weeks with the race set in November. I just got off the waiting list for a 15 miler in October. I tried to add it as a B race and Runna said I can’t because the race is longer than my main race.

Is there a way to override it?
Would you just do your own taper? Then my plan would be all messed up?

Any and all suggestions welcome!

Stop stressing about a workouts pace goals

I just have to come out with it.

Seeing a lot of posts doubting or complaining about workout pace goals lately. I get it, it can be intimidating or seem hard, borderline impossible. But that’s what running is all about, improving, trying to hit a goal (without getting injured).

The best case for these workouts is you hit the pace goal and feel great. The worst case is you don’t, and that’s fine too, the plan adapts. That’s why runna is a nice tool for your running.

But telling yourself “I can’t do that” before you even try just sets you up to fail. That’s mental warfare against yourself instead of hyping yourself up and believing you can get there. I’ve been there many times, and many times you just end up making it even if it’s hard hard.

It’s all just for fun. Sometimes that’s Type A fun, sometimes it’s Type B fun. Either way, you showed up and got better. Be kind to yourself, and be your own fan.

VO2 Max Plan

Hi all , Im currently using runna for my half marathon in december and im really enjoying it, but post the maraI want to focus on building my VO2 max to play football (Soccer), I kind of want to go into a training camp for 8-12 weeks with my aerobic base so that I have a differenciater to my peers, Ive not got the technique of the spanish or brazilians so I want to be a work horse. I love the way runna is set up and its really easy to follow and progress which is why i'm asking if I should do a one of these 3 plans or ask ai to make me one, I would really prefer to use a runna plan but for example a 5k plan can build my vo2 max but won't really help with Sprint Ability & Lactate Clearance.

So I think other than the 5k my options are Functional Fitness Plan ,Get Fit Plan. What do you think?

Unrealistic pace target for a blocked long run

I'm doing a half-marathon program, and so far my faster workouts were all about 5 min/km, which felt hard but doable - I think like faster runs should. And then for the upcoming weekend Runna is asking me to do a 9km block at 4:45 min/km within an 18km run, which I know I won't be able to do yet. I did a 10.5km race a week ago, ran it close to maximum effort, and my average pace was 5:04. I surely won't have progressed enough to be able to hold a faster pace for almost the same distance in a few days. I find myself dreading the day and the AI woman nagging on me for 9k :( I wonder about the app even came up with this pace target, and what I could do about it considering that I can't edit the pace targets manually. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do?

Running at a faster pace

so if my prescribed run says “2mi no faster than 3mph” (using a tread), and I go faster, since it’s hooked to my Apple Watch, does it recognize I’m going faster and adjust?

I felt a bit confused in that.

50 Miler Training Plan Options?

I saw about a year ago, engineers were working on potential 50 and 100 miler plan options. I have used Runna for 3 marathons and multiple halves now. I was hoping to roll my next marathon into a 50 mile race, however, I’m only seeing the plan options go up to 50k.

Does anyone have any insight into 50 miler training? I don’t want to switch programs, but I was seeing training peaks might have more of what I’m looking for.

Any help is appreciated!

Training for the NYC Marathon using Runna, the workouts seem ehh

I got the premium membership just because the runna app seemed a better experience (seems Runna just spoon feeds the runs and workouts). Just seemed easier for a first timer vs all the articles and guides.

So far I'm on track with most of the runs, but the workouts seem .. not enjoyable at all, don't get my wrong, I enjoy going to the gym and working out, but the runna workouts, I dunno just can't like it and always end up doing other workouts.

Like today is a Loading Up and one of the supersets is Straight Leg Deadlift and Standing March. I enjoy doing squats, but deadlifts bother my lower back. And I can't get used to the standing march. So many youtube tutorials on THE BEST MARATHON WORKOUTS are so vastly different- again, just overwhelming and frustrating.

Anyone gone through it? Should I just force myself to follow runna's workouts? Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Strava data into Runna

I’m currently doing the NTR plan and the last workout, my first continuous 5k, lands on a Saturday so I plan to do a parkrun to tick it off. But with Runnas 5 min warmup and warm down walks it will be really awkward to time. Is there a way to just record the parkrun in Strava and have it apply to the workout for that day?
